Life is full of hard choices. And what should you do when all alternatives seem equally good?Here are some tips on making decisions.

Relax. If you're stressed, you're more likely to overlook something important. However, when you're relaxed, you can think clearly, weigh your options and make a better choice.

Focus on the present. You can become stressed out with the big picture, trying to see how your decisions will affect your future.  But no one can be sure of the future until it comes. So just focus on the present and make the best possible decision now.

Accept failure. Your biggest fear probably is that your decision may lead to bad results.  And whatever the decision is, it will enrich your life anyway, in one way or another. So do not worry about making wrong decisions.

Seek good advice. Don't ask every one of your friends or family! Don't be afraid to ask for advice, and be willing to listen. Sometimes others' advice can make a new way for you.

No matter how you come to your decision, claim the ownership of your decision. Take full responsibility for your choices. Even if you meet with failure, you at least know you have tried your best and gained some valuable experience.

    A. Make your own decision.

    B. Therefore, slow down and keep calm.

    C. Being kind to yourself lessens your need for approval.

    D. But we can recover and learn from bad decisions.

    E. Only consult those who have faced similar circumstances.

    F. Not every problem can be solved by making a decision.

    G. This process is tiring as you're trying to see your future clearly.

By 2050 we'll be able to send memories, emotions and feelings across the Internet. Teenagers will love it. Instead of putting an emoticon (表情符号) at the end of every sentence, they will use an emotion: anger, happiness, or excitement.

I'm talking about telepathy (心灵感应), really. We'll still communicate the traditional way. Our children will wonder, What is a keyboard? We will enter the age of the "brain net".

Medicine will develop fast, too. We will have cured certain forms of cancer, and we will have begun to treat the disease like the common cold. We'll live with it. It will no longer be deadly. Technology will help in this respect. Smart toilets will perform liquid biopsies (液体活检) to discover cancer cells. Smart objects like phones will check us over automatically.

By 2050 I think we'll be able to grow many of the important organs (器官) of the body and, rather than allow the organs we're born with to become old and weak, we'll replace them. That's all coming. And it doesn't take much imagination to realise it.

    A. We will do a few tests.

    B. People will live an easy life.

    C. We won't fear it like we used to.

    D. Brain science will have changed communication.

    E. We can already use human cells to grow skin, noses, ears, etc.

    F. But communicating telepathically will avoid misunderstandings between people.

    G. Our clothes will discover the beginnings of a heart disease, and advise us to get treatment.

Is Doodling (涂鸦) Good for You?

Doodling is drawing lines, shapes, etc, especially when you are bored or thinking about something else. Some people believe that drawing random patterns and designs during meetings and lectures shows you aren't listening or paying attention.  They show that doodling may be beneficial.

It used to be seen as a product of absent-mindedness. However, a modern article on the Harvard University website has discussed the idea that random drawings may assist you in keeping memory and focus.

The article mentioned above highlights that 26 of 44 American presidents were known to doodle, with Ronald Reagan famous for drawing cowboys. A 2009 study conducted by psychologist Jackie Andrade asked 40 people to listen to a "dull and odd" voice message.  Those people who did were able to recall 29% more of the information contained in the message.

Some experts believe that embracing your creative and artistic sides during meetings may keep your mind active. Jesse Prinz, a famous professor of philosophy, actively encourages his students to doodle. He believes that doodling is the "sweet spot of attention". And it may not just be good for your concentration. An artist known as Mi Doodle has made a career out of his doodles.

So random drawing to aid concentration may be becoming more of a thing.  So next time you see staff members casually drawing pictures during a meeting, it may be a sign that they are listening more than you think.

    A. Doodling is universal from the past to the present.

    B. It is rare to see a college student doodling at present.

    C. However, there are studies which claim the opposite.

    D. The young weaken their concentration by random drawing.

    E. Employees begin to be taught how to doodle in the workplace.

    F. Half of the group were asked to doodle and shade in a picture.

    G. He sells his artworks online and also decorates people's houses.

Years ago, I decided to take the adventure and start working from home. I became a stay-at-home mom with two young boys. I felt lost after leaving the working world so I wanted something new to focus on.  I really wanted an excuse to connect with other adults regularly.

But only weeks into my new adventure, I was trapped in the comparison game. I constantly compared my progress with that of others on my team. It seemed that this business was coming easily to everyone but me.

Then the leader of my team came to me. He gave me some advice and encouraged me to keep my blinders (马眼罩) on.  The blinders help them avoid distractions as they walk down the chosen path. So I took my leader's advice of putting on "blinders".

I got more peaceful. And I became able to appreciate the little goals I had achieved in my business. I wasn't making huge "jumps" like some others on my team. But as one small success led to another, my confidence and happiness grew. I was encouraged to make more progress.

From this experience, I've learned that comparing myself to others truly gets me nowhere. It not only prevents my ambition, but also overshadows my successes. Whether in business or parenting, there will always be someone performing better than me.  I'm running in my own race — enjoying it at my own perfect pace.

    A. It turned out that it benefited me a lot.

    B. But what was I going to do with the blinders?

    C. I didn't let others' accomplishments lessen my own.

    D. The weight of comparison made me close to quitting.

    E. Do you know that horses wear blinders as they pull carriages?

    F. And what I should hold to is that I'm not running in their race.

    G. Preferably, it was something that had nothing to do with childcare.

As you work on expressing your ideas in clear, accurate language, you will improve your ability to think clearly and accurately.
    C. If you take full advantage of your speech class, you will be able to develop your skills as a critical thinker in many circumstances. This is one reason public speaking has been regarded as a vital part of education since the days of ancient Greece.

    E. Organizing a speech is not just a matter of arranging the ideas you already have. Rather, it is an important part of shaping the ideas themselves.

Anybody who has lost a loved one knows how comforting it is to have something of theirs close by. No matter how hard we try and hold on to the precious moments created with our loved ones, they have passed away.

That's why Mary of Scotland has made it her mission to comfort heartbroken individuals by transforming their items into special keepsakes (纪念品).

The 21-year-old is studying fashion technology at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and planned to work in the bridal industry. Sharing the memory bears was nowhere near her original career plan.

"I made my first memory bear five years ago as a favor for a friend, and was constantly asked to make more, but turned them down because I wanted to concentrate on university and a career in the bridal industry.

But I finally gave in to requests for bears and once I uploaded photos to my page demand just exploded — so at the moment I'm fully committed to making them," she recalls.

Before long, Mary had so many customers that she was able to set up a business, for which she received a Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2016.

"No matter how sad the stories are, I know my work is incredibly important. It's really a privilege to be asked to create something from people's personal possessions," she says.

We all like to think that we are rational (理性的) thinkers, but poor decisions and choices are evident all around us: staying in bad relationships or boring jobs, taking up smoking, eating too much junk food; the list goes on. So why can't we make better decisions? One reason appears to be what psychologists call "decision fatigue": the idea that we all have a limited store of energy for making decisions and practising self-control. For example, if you are ground down by everyday struggles, you have less mental energy for good decisions.

However, studies point to the fact that deciding things early in the day is likely to lead to better outcomes. Most of us will have had the experience of going to bed with a seemingly unsolvable problem, only to wake up with a flash of inspiration the next morning. So decisions made when we feel least tired are more likely to be the right ones.

Another worthwhile strategy is to pretend that you are advising an imaginary friend, rather than relating decisions to your own life. This creates a distance between you and the issues in question, and can help you to think logically rather than emotionally.

People often advise making lists of advantages and disadvantages, and then prioritizing the items in each list. This can certainly be helpful, but we need to be careful not to over-think every decision. We may overestimate the value of information, and sometimes it is better simply to go with our gut instinct (直觉).

Perhaps the most important thing we can do to minimize the possibility of regret is to make sure that our decisions are in line with our life values; in other words, to have a life vision and be true to it. Instead of asking ourselves questions such as "Which option is safer?" or "Which option is best financially?", it is far better to ask "How will I feel about this when I'm 70?".

    1. (1) What does "decision fatigue" mean?
    2. (2) Why do people tend to make good decisions early in the day?
    3. (3) Decide which part of the following statement is wrong. Underline it and explain why.

Sometimes it is a good idea to go with our gut instinct to make decisions, because weighing advantages and disadvantages takes great efforts.

    4. (4) In addition to the strategies in the passage, please suggest another way to make good decisions. (In about 40 words)

Growing up poor and having parents who didn't receive a good education, I often struggled at school. What was worse, my parents often moved to different places. They likely did not realize the damaging effects it had on my learning as they moved from apartment to apartment, year after year.

I attended seven different schools from kindergarten through the 8th grade. With a fragmented (片段的) education, I entered high school, not doing well in literacy and math. But it was not until I attended a major public state university that I really understood the academic gaps that I had in comparison to my peers. I had to work particularly hard to not only understand the textbooks and lectures, but also catch myself up in basic skills of writing and comprehension. But I wasn't the one to forgo. No matter how hard it was, I persisted.

Today, I have many degrees, three of them are Master's Degrees and I am currently in my second year of studying for my doctorate in Educational Leadership.

I share my story for various reasons, but mainly due to the hope that another young child, possibly growing up poor, can realize that an education is the ticket to the quality of life. It can happen for that child. One can be successful! One can overcome all obstacles.

Some days will be extremely tougher than others and someday those accomplishments will glow (发光), but giving up is not a wise choice. It certainly won't lead to the light at the end of the tunnel. Therefore, we should take advantage of the challenges and difficulties to make us stronger and reflect on how to beat all the differences. We should foster our thinking that current challenges have been designed to build upon our strength, not tear us down. In this way, we can fulfill our long-term goals.
