"Poor little Snowhopper!" said Heidi. She drew the little goat softly to her. "Don't be sad anymore. See, I am coming up with you every day now. If there is anything the matter, you can come to me."

Snowhopper put her head on Heidi's shoulder and stopped bleating.

Suddenly, Peter jumped up and ran after the goats. Heidi knew there was something wrong, so she followed him. She saw him running to a dangerous cliff. Peter had seen Thistlefinch go nearer and nearer to the dangerous place. Peter arrived just in time to stop the goat from falling down the cliff. However, Peter fell down and was only able to catch the goat by one leg. Thistlefinch bleated angrily. Peter wasn't able to get up, so he called for help loudly. Heidi quickly picked some grass and held it under the animal's nose. She said, "Come, come, Thistlefinch. You might fall down there and break your leg. That would hurt you."

The goat followed her and ate the grass. When Peter stood up and the goat was safe, he began to beat it. The goat moved back. Heidi cried loudly, "Peter, do not beat him!"

"Well. he deserves it," said Peter angrily, ready to beat him again. But Heidi stopped him and shouted, "You mustn't hurt him! Let him go!"

When he saw Heidi's eyes, he stopped. "I'll let him go, if you give me a piece of your cheese again tomorrow," he said.

"You can have it all tomorrow and every day. I don't need it," Heidi said to him. "I will also give you a big piece of bread, if you don't beat any of the goats again."

Shawn Moore, a musician from the United States, has given a lot of his time and effort to his various jobs in Beijing for years. He is an admissions officer for his Alma Mater Bard College, the music director for the Yale Club in Beijing, and a solo (独奏) artist whose first solo album is going to come out.

Moore has worked closely with David Qu, a pianist and composer, for many years. They co-work on music, combining classical pieces like Mozart and Beethoven and modern jazz pieces on stage. • 1. (2023九下·深圳月考) 请阅读全文,并从下列方框里的六个句子中选择五个还原到原文中,使原文的意思完整、连贯。(共5小题,每小题2分)

    A. Any space. Any style.

    B. Any other trees make excellent supports for beans.

    C. With the supports, all plants are easier to pick from.

    D. Crops like cucumbers can also double the total amounts.

    E. It's a good idea to use old clear and long plastic bottles or toilet tissue tubes.

    F. Plants that have advantages from the support use different kinds of methods to hold together.

Growing food in small spaces can be fun, you just need a little sunshine and some imagination.

When planning a vegetable garden, being able to quickly try out different planting styles can save a huge amount of time and help you grow healthier plants which produce more food even in a small balcony (阳台).

    Plant Supports.

You can make better use of every square inch to grow upright crops. Pole beans can produce twice as many beans as bush ones.  Tomatoes need some type of support to keep them above the wet ground. The most successful support allows more leaves to reach the sun and it must be strong enough to hold its plants.

    How Plants Climb

For example, tomatoes like to throw themselves over their support. They always let their branches develop roots (根) in places that touch the ground. Peas and cucumber-family crops will twist around their support. When they hold together, they grow strongly upward.

    Recycled Containers

Use your imagination to select containers for plants—just make holes in the bottom for drying liquid. Make your own pots with them because they are great for deep-rooting plants like beans.

Emotions such as fear and anxiety can make the heart beat faster. Now a study in mice has found that the opposite is also true—increasing the heart rate (心率) can raise anxiety levels.

To test the fact directly, Deisseroth with his team turned to a method that uses light to control cell(细胞) activity. The team trained the animals to react quickly to light and expect a shock if they pressed a handle for a water reward. Using the system, the team raised the animals' heart rates from their normal 660 beats per minute to 900. When their hearts started racing, mice became less willing to press the handle or to explore open areas, showing that they were more anxious. But for animals in other situations, the increased heart rate had no effect, suggesting that the brain and the heart worked together to produce anxiety.

When the researchers measured the animals' brain activity, they found that brain became more active when the heart rate increased if the animal was acting anxiously. It means that brain is in charge of joining signals from the heart with danger from the environment before they pass on the information to higher thinking areas.

    1. (1) What is the result of the study in mice?
    2. (2) How did Deisseroth with his team operate the test?
    3. (3) What does the underlined word "suggesting" mean?
    4. (4) What can we infer (推断) from the researchers' finding of Paragraph 3?
    5. (5) What is the best title of the passage?

What do you usually do in your spare time? Chatting online is now a national pastime(消遣) in China, especially among the post-90s and post-00s generation. To some people, however, online chats can seem like a kind of polite conversation. Yet hidden rules do exist(存在), as long as you take the time to look for them.

    Get to the Point

When sending a friend request, include your real name and any other identifying(身份辨别) information. Remember, everybody's time is valuable. If there's something you want, cut right to the chase. Never send an "Are you there?" without any follow-up messages. The quicker that you get to the point, the more likely the other person is to reply.

    Send the Right Things

Please send texts, not voice messages. It might be easier for you to speak than type, but what about the person on the other end? They may be unable to listen to a 59-second message right now. Also, never send information by voice message—it is hard to note down. Emojis(表情符号) and GIFs can save the day when you find yourself in an embarrassing conversation, or words fail you.

    Try to Understand

You can always judge a person's mood by their text messages. If the person you're talking to says "Good night" or "I'm going to take a shower", that's probably not what they're actually going to do. It is just an excuse to stop talking to you. If someone waits for longer than three seconds before saying "Yes", they probably really mean "No". If you receive these emojis from friends who are older, read them literally (照字面地) (such as a smile or a wave). For the post-90s and post-00s generation, however, they could be speechlessness(无语).

    1. (1) What may the underlined sentence mean?
    2. (2) What does the word "it" refer to in Paragraph 3?
    3. (3) Who will send you a wave to say goodbye according to the passage?
    4. (4) What is the writer's opinion about chatting online?
    5. (5) What is the passage mainly about?
