A young student once asked his Master, "Master, you always tell us (be) kind and compassionate (怀有悲悯之心的). But what is compassion?" Hearing this, he (lead) the student to the window and directed his attention to the beggar sitting on the corner of the street. They noticed that an old lady had walked by and given him a coin. Then a businessman fine clothes passed by and gave him five coins. After a while, a mother and a child passed the street. The young child walked towards the beggar and handed him a flower he (carry).
"Who do you believe was (kind) person with compassion for the beggar?" "The businessman." The Master smiled and said, "You see, an elderly lady passing by (trouble) by the beggar's poverty, she had to give him a gold coin. The businessman saw a small gathering of people talking about him, so he handed the beggar five coins and left (quick). When a child carrying some (flower) walked by the beggar, the child smiled and handed him a flower. He had pride nor pity or want to boost his social image. He acted with love and he was one who responded compassionately. A compassionate person knows that all beings are the same."
