This fall break, I took my son Nels, aged 15 , for our long-planned vacation in a national park. We had a rented cottage at the foot of the mountain by a lake. And my niece Susan, aged 12, also joined us.

On the first day, abundant items kept everyone occupied: picnicking, canoeing, shooting. When night fell, we sat around the campfire singing and dancing with other vacationers, all having a great day.

Nevertheless, on the second day, I noticed Susan constantly checking her screen, busily texting. That day, she stayed indoors glued to her phone, playing Axe Climber. Then, I had an idea, announcing, "Tomorrow, we'll hike to the top of the Stone Mountains."

She finally nodded unwillingly, "Fine, I'll give it a try."

I smiled. Anyway, she agreed. The next morning, we awakened to the sound of birds singing. It was a nice day with the sun shining mildly and clouds floating leisurely. "A perfect day for hiking," I said. "I will go, Uncle," Susan replied mechanically.

Packing bread, bottled water and camera into the backpack, we set out for our destination. Against the blue sky, a rough trail wound its way to the top of the mountain.

"I still don't think it's a good idea," Susan complained, frowning.

"No pains, no gains! Come on!" I encouraged.

Jessy watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jessy sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee's watch lying right in the middle of the path.

Jessy knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn't want to run after him. Jessy bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jessy put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. "I'm going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I've won lots of competitions. But when I'm in a race, I'm not really thinking about winning. I'm just loving the feeling of being in the water…" Jessy laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jessy saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee's watch really DID have something magic about it.

The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Bella asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jessy slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Bella could say anything, there was a shout from behind. "She's stolen my watch!" Lee said angrily, "It went missing at school yesterday."

But the boy didn't show up the following day. The principal told him, "We've given Archie chances, but there's no improvement. His presence is affecting our academic statistics." Mr. Morgan started to worry.

Stranded (困住) far from family, I refused to give up

The date had been circled on my calendar for months — Friday 18 December 2013. Mum was coming to pick me up from university and bring me home for the Christmas holidays. There was nothing that made me happier than Christmas with my family. Our small celebrations were the same every year. I could picture it. Mum, my younger brother and me all dressed up and opened presents on Christmas morning by the tree, the same festive CD sound tracking our day.

The call came at 10am that Friday. I was dressed and packed, Christmas presents divided into carrier bags. I'd made sure the fridge in my shared student kitchen was empty, everything eaten or chucked away, and my live-in carer was leaving at lunchtime.

"We are not going to make it," my mum said on the phone. "Ken was blanketed overnight, with up to 20cm falling in three hours. We've crawled as far as Detling, but they've closed the motorway because it was dusted in a thick layer of snow. There's no way we can get to you." I was stranded.

Alone in my student bedroom, I burst into tears. "What am I going to do?" My life was different from that of other students. Without my carer, I had no one to help me cook, wash and get into bed. My friends had already left and the halls of residence were eerily (怪异地) quiet.

Suddenly, a crazy idea came across my mind, "How about going home independently using the wheelchair?" Anyway, I decided to have a try. After calling multiple firms in the hope that their one wheelchair-adapted vehicle was available, I was lucky to get an accessible one to the train station. One hour later, I arrived, but found myself stranded on the bustling platform, feeling helplessly at the steps leading up the train.

Just then a few young men noticed my struggle in the wheelchair and came to help me.

When I finally arrived home, making it indoors, mum was shocked to see me.

It was a sunny day. Sophie and her parents decided to go boating in the park. Sophie was amazed by the calm lake in front of her when she reached the lake. It was so still that it reflected (映出) the clouds above like a mirror. But when Sophie walked excitedly to the shore of the lake, she saw small waves spread out. After a while, the lake became calm again, and the perfect reflection of the clouds returned.

Then, as they left the area with the flowers behind, a butterfly landed on Sophie's paddle. "Hi, how beautiful," she said before it flew away. Sophie tried to paddle softly. "Let's stay close to the shore," her dad suggested.

Sophie was excited when she saw a turtle (龟) swimming near them. It had short legs and red and yellow on its neck. "Hi, I'm Sophie. What's your name? You've got four paddles. We only have two," she told the turtle. She wanted to get a better look, but the turtle swam away. "Was I too loud, Dad? Do you think it'll come back?" she asked. Her dad just smiled and nodded.

After they sat down, Mr. Smith began, "Billy, I know you're a smart boy, but you're wasting your life now. Why don't you study hard to go to college so that you can change your life and have a bright future?"

Hearing that, Billy didn't know what to say. He had never thought about it. Billy was in silence. Mr. Smith continued, "I know you may have never thought about going to college. But everything is possible. When I was at your age, I was a troublemaker just like you and never thought I'd be able to go to college, either. It was all because of the support and encouragement of Mr. Howard, my math teacher in high school."

"No, let's use these!"I said, grabbing a handful of paper napkins. Aunt Nelda reached for the drawer. "My children prefer cloth napkins!" she said. I held my breath, waiting for the horrible scene. However, I couldn't believe that she handed me some neat napkins.

"I've already cleaned them up,"she said."It was so strange that there was much food under the napkins. I hadn't seen mice for years! Guess what? They were back again. A long time ago, they made a nest and carried the food all over the house."

"This is a dream catcher," said Nokomis. "Our people have made these for many years. Circles are symbols of unity and strength. Let's hang it over your bed tonight. It will catch your bad dreams in the web, and your good dreams will fall through the center. Maybe it will give you courage to do your presentation." Looking at Nokomis, Peter asked whether he could take that to school. Nokomis refused because the dream catcher was extremely precious, which meant a lot to her.

Peter felt disappointed at her words because he wanted to share the dream catcher with his class. "We could make you one," said Nokomis. "I'd like that!" cried Peter in excitement. Without delay, Nokomis and Peter worked together and they made a dream catcher.

He explained he had built it for his grandson before the boy was born. She gave him an impressed look, thanked him again, and the two carried the crib into her room. That night, baby Cherise slept very well, only waking up once. Sarah was so happy about the new crib that she showed it off to all her friends.

"My goodness, Sarah! Where did you find this?" they all wanted to know.

"Grandpa Dixon, the sweet man next door, showed up on my doorstep with it and said he had built it for his grandson. The poor man has no one left after his grandson passed away. I feel so bad for him. I wish there were something we could do."
