There are several ups and downs in everyone's life. No matter how strong an individual is, there is usually a time when he finds the need of someone encouraging him to meet the challenges. That may make him feel the power and the energy to deal with all sorts of negativity in life.

The power of motivation is beyond explanation. However, the person, who benefits from it, understands its importance instantly he hears it. The fact is that there exists the gap between the speech of an expert and that of the average. And probably the reason is the experience of a life coach in dealing with the life of countless people on the Earth in his entire career.

Or rather, whatever he says or advises is not only the output of the words on the page, but also what he has learned from the lives of people around. It is his real life experience that he uses to improve the lives of other people on the globe. Having met countless people throughout the career, the life coach becomes used to the problems. So, his every suggestion goes straight, touches the heart and increases the energy of a listener, and eventually helps them address different problems in life.

If you think such speeches are mere words and sentences, you are absolutely wrong. But actually they are the magical words that bring a great change in the life of disappointed and annoyed people on the globe. With such speeches, life coaches dig out the problems that the listener is facing in life.

    A. Sometimes, it is not difficult to define an expert.

    B. In particular, a speech from an expert is motivational.

    C. The knowledge of an expert is not limited to the books.

    D. Especially when stuck in dilemma, you really feel helpless.

    E. Besides, he knows what kind of solutions will prove the best.

    F. And they also find the root cause to come up with a final solution.

    G. If you think anyone can deliver such a speech, you might be wrong.

It was a dark and stormy night. The ferocious wind shook the windows wildly, as though someone outside were beating on the glass. It was also New Year's Eve. We were having our annual party and had a house full of people just starting to celebrate.

Suddenly, we heard loud explosions. Looking outside and up into the hills, we saw sparks(火花) flying from electrical transformers(变压器). One area after another went dark up in those hills. Then there was the loudest explosion of them all and our house went dark too. I tried to find every candle we had and lit them. The candles made everything look lovely. But we had problems. We had fifteen people standing around and we still had to cook dinner. How would we do that without electricity?

The barbecue! Why not cook on the barbecue? We men went outside, some holding flashlights and others cooking. We did a wonderful job. The women stayed inside and got the salads ready. Everything was delicious. There were still a few hours to go before the beginning of the new year, so we all sat around the dining room table and sang up until a few minutes before midnight. We couldn't watch the ball drop in Times Square on television but that wouldn't stop us from celebrating. I stood on a chair and, with the help of someone's watch to tell us the time, we all counted down and I dropped a tennis ball! We all screamed Happy New Year. We didn't need electricity for that!

Nowadays, we still get together with the same group to celebrate the New Year and we still talk about that special night. I don't think we have ever laughed so much as we did on that New Year's Eve.

Alice Moore is a teenager entrepreneur, who in May 2015 set up her business AilieCandy. By the time she was 13, her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids' teeth, instead of destroying them.

It all began when Moore visited a bank with her dad. On the outing, she was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Moore was sick of missing out on candies. So she desired to get round the warning, "Why can't I make a healthy candy that's good for my teeth so that my parents can't say no to it?" With that in mind, Moore asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. He recommended that she do some research and talk to dentists about what a healthier candy would contain.

With her dad's permission, she spent the next two years researching online and conducting trials to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly. She also approached dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning. Consequently, she succeeded in making a kind of candy only using natural sweeteners, which can reduce oral bacteria.

Moore then used her savings to get her business off the ground. Afterwards, she and her father secured their first business meeting with a supermarket owner, who finally agreed to sell Moore's product — CanCandy.

As CanCandy's success grows so does Moore's credibility as a young entrepreneur. Moore is enthusiastic about the candy she created, and she's also positive about what the future might bring. She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile.

Meanwhile, with her parents' help, Moore is generally able to live a normal teenage life. Although she founded her company early on in life, she wasn't driven primarily by profit. Moore wants to use her unique talent to help others find their smiles. She donates 10% of AilicCandy's profits to Big Smiles. With her talent and determination, it appears that the sky could be the limit for Alice Moore.

    1. (1) How did Moore react to her dad's warning? (No more than 10 words)
    2. (2) What is special about CanCandy? (No more than 10 words)
    3. (3) What does Moore expect from her business? (No more than 15 words)
    4. (4) How do you understand the underlined part in the last paragraph? (no more than 5 words)
    5. (5) How does Moore's story inspire you to achieve success? Put it in your own words. (No more than 20 words)?
  • 1.  Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

    A. The genes passed down from your ancestors is sampled and matched with people who originated from a certain area.

    B. DNA testing may give you a confusing picture of who your ancestors are.

    C. This process is also called genetic recombination.

    D. The evolutionary history of mankind is largely determined by genetic recombination.

    E. So, the next time someone says you look a bit like you're from a certain country, you may well be.

    F. However, this process of recombination means that inevitably some of their genetic make-up will be lost along the way.

    Is DNA Testing Accurate?

Have you ever wondered why your brother or sister doesn't look exactly like you despite having the same family tree? If you think that's odd, even stranger is the idea that you and your sibling may have very different ancestry genes. You have the same parents, and therefore the exact same ancestors, but somehow your DNA tests come back with very different results. How is this even possible?

Children inherit half of their DNA from each parent, via the sperm from the father and the egg from the mother. Our bodies contain 46 chromosomes(染色体), or 23 pairs. However, each reproductive cell has only 23 individual chromosomes. When the bodies of our ancestors created their sex cells, the cells engaged in genetic reshuffling, meaning each of the 23 chromosomes is a unique combination of an original pair.

This is why Dr. Prosanta Chakrabarty, a scientist who studies fish to help explain the evolution of human beings and our planet, says that your sister could be 10% more "French" than you, despite having the same ancestors. And the further you go back in your lineage(血统), the more confusing it can be.

You inherit 25 % of each grandparent's DNA.

This could mean that the genes you inherited from your grandparent could be completely different to those your cousin received.

Those studying genealogy(家谱学) should also be aware that modern DNA testing might not give you an accurate idea of your ancestry as it is tested against a current, but incomplete database. Many of the genctic samples come from North America and Western Europe.

However, without enough samples from the Middle East or Africa, the results may be inaccurate.

Dr. Prosanta Chakrabarty says that only 1 % of our genetic make-up is unique to us, and that it is an incomplete mash-up of our ancestors'. But it might not show up in your tests.

    Mother Teresa

Mother' Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia, on August 26, 1910. At the age of twelve, she felt strongly the call. She knew she had to spread the great love to the world. At the age of eighteen she left her parental home in Skopje and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India.  From 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta, but the suffering and poverty she glimpsed outside the convent walls made such a deep impression on her that in 1948 she received permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and devote herself to working among the poorest of the poor in Calcutta. Although she had no funds, she depended on Divine Providence, and started an open-air school for slum children. Soon she was joined by voluntary helpers, and financial support was also forthcoming.

On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa received permission from the Holy See to start her own order, "The Missionaries of Charity", whose primary task was to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after. In 1965 the Society became an International Religious Family.  In 1963 both the Contemplative branch of the Sisters and the Active branch of the Brothers was founded. In 1979 the Contemplative branch of the Brothers was added, and in 1984the Priest branch was established.

The Society of Missionaries has spread all over the world, including the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries. They provide effective help to the poorest of the poor in a number of countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and they undertake relief work in the wake of natural catastrophes such as floods, epidemics, and famine, and for refugees.  The Missionaries of Charity throughout the world are aided and assisted by Co-Workers who became an official International Association on March 29, 1969.

    A. Preparing drinking water is a necessity in case any emergency strikes.

    B. Placing an employee or several employees in charge of this task is a good idea.

    C. A first aid kit and fire extinguishers are a must when putting together disaster supplies.

    D. Try to have at least three days of food and water to cover the number of employees you have.

    E. Planning for an emergency is not much different from planning for an event or vacation.

    F. If the area is blocked off and people are stranded at your business, food and water, plus safety equipment, are needed.

How do I Choose the Best Disaster Supplies?

Choosing the best disaster supplies for your business should be based on the needs you and your employees and customers would likely have during an emergency.  Your emergency plan should fit the size and location of your business and basic disaster supplies should be stored in a disaster kit.

It is considerate to prepare extra to allow for clients or temporary workers that may be inside your business if a natural disaster or other emergency strikes. Include preparation essentials such as manual can openers, eating utensils and paper plates, along with the canned or packaged foods.

Any food purchased for the disaster kit should have "best before" dates. When the dates indicate that the food is within a month of expiring, you can donate it to a food bank and restock your emergency food supplies.  You can appoint a crisis management team from your staff to hold regular meetings to help you create a disaster preparedness plan that includes assembling disaster supplies in a certain storage closet within the workplace.

Disaster supplies should include plastic sheeting and duct tape(强力胶布) to use to shield off damaged areas. Plastic garbage bags and paper supplies such as toilet tissue and paper towels should be included in a disaster kit for a business. Flashlights and radios with extra batteries are also needed in disaster preparedness, and you can add the tools and cleaning supplies which you think would be needed in an emergency.

Anyhow, take time to think about what disaster supplies your business, employees and customers are likely to need and make sure your emergency plans are put into place.

  • 1.  Read the passage and complete it by using the sentences in the box below. Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

    A. The space agency aims to have a gender-balanced workforce but can only achieve that if equal numbers of men and women train for science and technology careers.

    B. The issue of female scientists' being unrepresented has already aroused a heated debate among the scientific community.

    C. It would certainly inspire a younger female generation by showing what is possible.

    D. But probably the only thing that's certain about this exploration into the unknown so far, is that it's been dominated by men.

    E. It can be seen as a milestone in the course of battling for gender equality.

    F. However, after that, space flight programmes were slow to employ women.

    Women in Space

There's no doubt that one of the greatest achievements by humankind is the exploration of space. Ever since cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to journey into space in 1961, scientists have been exploring it and pushing the boundaries to try and go further and discover things that are yet to be discovered.  of course, in the past, women haven't been excluded from space projects. Women have been involved on the ground at mission control—and behind the scenes women have worked as seamstresses(女裁缝师), stitching vital spaceflight components. In fact, many of NASA's key missions would never have left the ground without them. And it was a group of black female mathematicians, recently portrayed in a Hollywood movie called Hidden Figures, who helped NASA launch an American into space.

But this hasn't been women's only contribution. Back in 1963, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to launch into space.  In the USA, NASA didn't accept applications from women to become astronauts until 1978, and as missions to the Moon had ended by then, it meant Neil Armstrong's arrival on the Moon in 1969 was " a giant step for mankind"—and also an important step for a man.

But attitudes have moved on and leading engineers at NASA have said that the first person to set foot on Mars should be a woman. As Allison McIntryre, Chief of the NASA Space Vehicle Mock-up Facility, said, "My director is a women, my former division chief is a woman. We have female astronauts. We haven't put a woman on the Moon yet. And I think that perhaps the first person to step on Mars should be a woman. "

A woman landing on Mars would be an amazing achievement for being a first for womankind and would, for some, be incredible. For them, the thought of other planets being a men-only destination, would be an alien concept.

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.

For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etcIn general the person feels excited and ready to act.

Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, "Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably."

Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

Welive surrounded by advanced technology.. You can get the information you want immediately over the Internet. With various technologies surroundingus, it's easy to wonder how ancient people got anything done.

Actually, all of our modern things are based on older technologies. Ancient people didn't necessarily have steel or wheels or electronic communication. Yet, they built monument (纪念碑) even bigger than Stonehenge. . And ancient Egyptians built the pyramids — with huge mystery rooms inside.

.The first "kitchen" flames were still older. Ancient human relatives cooked food over fires in Europe 800, 000 years ago. The first spear-throwers threw their weapons 279, 000 years ago—before modern humans existed.

At first, scientists long believed that the ancients who lived  80, 000 years ago were the first to throw spears with stone tips. Then came the discovery of 279, 000-year-old stone spear tips in Ethiopia. These pushed the date back..

Scientists have been trying to figure out how ancient people developed their tools and build their cities and monuments.. They are also recreating ancient techniques themselves — from rolling pyramid rocks to testing out ancient tar (沥青) recipes. They detect mystery holes in Great Pyramid of Giza: Using high tech tools normally reserved for particle physics research, scientists have found a large hidden hole inside Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza. They have made some great discoveries, but they know there are still a lot of things waiting to be discovered.

    A. Ancient people were really clever
    B. Not all of these technologies are useful
    C. For example, there are skyscrapers and spaceships
    D. They also raised huge stone heads on Easter Island
    E. They use modern technologies to explore the ancient places

For years, Jessica and Eric have lived down the street from their favorite sandwich shop. Despite its being so close to home, they preferred to dine in, and always tipped generously when they did. But, during the pandemic in 2020, the café temporarily closed, then reopened-for take outorders only. So their new routine became to order online, go pick up theirfood, and eat it at home.

That is, until the day they drove up and a waitress ran out to meet them. "I was wondering if I'm doing something wrong, because you never leave a tip," she said. Eric attempted to explain: "Because we aren't being waited on, we didn't think tipping was necessary.""She stormed off," Jessica says.

The pandemic has been particularly hard on people working for tips. Some haven't been able to do their jobs at all, while others don't interact with customers the same way. Meanwhile, many customers felt the need to tip more because of the new risks and hardships that essential service workers suddenly faced.

"We were tipping based on emotion, and that may not have had anything to do with the service. And that service also became harder to assess." says Toni Dupree, a professional etiquette(礼仪)coach. Some old standards no longer seem fair, and several newer ones will apply long after the pandemic is over.

Next time, in Dupree's view, you're unsure whether a tip is in order, follow this simple rule: The novelist George Eliot asked, "What do we live for if not to make the world less difficult for each other?" Dupree adds: "Tipping well is one way to make things easier for someone else."

    A.When in doubt, tip.

    B.That made it worse.

C.It is service itself that counts.

    D.Tipping never crossed their minds.

E.To enjoy good services, tipping is amust.

F.Just as many services have changed, so should tipping.

G.Tips dried up in either case, causing a lot of people to suffer.
