Last summer I spent four months taking part in BUNAC's Work America programme, living and working in Peoria, Illinois. 1 knew that I wanted a proper job and got a taste of the real America.
I found a job in a country club and worked as a waiter. As the summer progressed. I took the opportunity to work in other areas of the club helping to plan private parties and other events.
l was living and working closely with most of the country club staff (职员)and we formed great friendships. I thought our friendships would last for a long time. The travel opportunities were amazing! I was able to spend most of my days exploring(探索) the" Windy City"--Chicago.
On my way back to the UK I stopped off in New York City. Never having been there before, I visited the usual sights, such as the Empire State Building and Times Square, as well as exploring the different neighbourhoods around Manhattan. What an amazing summer!
It takes much time to learn a language. There are many reasons to learn a language.
▲Emigration(移民)
When you move to a different country or region (地区), learning the local language will help you communicate with the local community. Even if many local people speak your language, it's important to learn their language. It will also give you a better understanding of their culture and way of thinking.
▲Work
lf your work is about languages, talking to people in their own languages will help you communicate with them. Knowing languages may also increase your opportunity(机会)of finding a new job, getting a promotion(晋升), a transfer (转移)overseas, or going on foreign business trips.
Many English-speaking business people don't bother(麻烦) to learn other languages because they believe English is widely spoken around the world. The lack(缺乏) of foreign language knowledge puts the English speakers at a disadvantage.
▲Travel
When you go on holiday, you can get more information by speaking English. If people don't understand you, you can speak slowly and raise the voice.
▲Food
Perhaps you enjoy the food and drink of a country or a region and make trips there. It is very useful to learn a foreign language.
My first experience of taking part in the English corner was very interesting. My classmate and 1 went there to1our spoken(口头的) English. At the beginning, 2 of us talked actively with other people until we net an American3. He said he taught in a school here in China. He was friendly and 4us to join his group. We joined in their discussion(讨论), 5we were too shy to say anything. He kept6us," You can say anything as you7, a story or a joke. 8 is OK! If you don't want to say anything, 9do you come here? Come on!"
The second time I went to the English corner, I became more 10. I even invited a11 to join our group. She 12me that she learnt English all 13herself. Although she was very14, she went to the English corner every week. She told me that it was 15for me to improve my spoken English in a short time, but if I never gave up, I would succeed in the end!
Modern life is impossible without travelling. The fastest way to travel is by air. With a modern plane you can travel in one day to places very far away while it might take you a month or more one hundred years ago.
Travelling by train is slower than by air, but it has its advantages. You can see the country when you are taking a train. Modern trains have comfortable seats and dining cars. They make even the longest journey enjoyable.
Some people prefer to travel by sea when it is possible. There are large liners and river boats and you can visit many other countries and different places with them. Travelling by sea is a very pleasant way to spend a holiday.
Many people like to travel by car. You can make your own timetable. You can travel three or four hundred miles or only fifty miles a day, just as you like. You can stop anywhere if you want to: a place with something interesting to see, a good restaurant to enjoy a good meal, or a hotel to spend the night. That is why travelling by car is popular for pleasant trips, while people usually take a train or a plane when they are travelling on business.
I am 22. I used to work in a hotel. It was boring. One day, a guest and I had a conversation. She asked me, "Do you like your job?" I was sad as I answered, "No. "
She was 74 and gave me the most beautiful advice that I remember in all my life. "You are too young to hate your job, young man. Go to get your passport and start your adventure. "
So I did.
Since I was a little kid, I was dreaming to know Europe. So the next day I had my passport. And one week later, my plane tickets.
It was impossible to have a long holiday. So I resigned(辞职). My boss said I was crazy. My friends said that I was not responsible(负责的). I just paid no attention to those voices.
I packed some books, a camera, 4 shirts, 2 pants, a coat, gloves, 2 pairs of walking shoes, candies and music to give away.
I had little money. I just walked and walked. I went to high mountains and big cities. I saw some beautiful sunsets. I heard some of the best music (for free). I discovered that there was still love in the world. I realised that sunrises are not always blue or yellow. Sometimes they mix.
I spent 22 days and $ 1,500 (including the plane tickets). What I did to save money:
●Used Couch Surfing(沙发客).
●Ate 20-cent bread.
●Went to Burger King to get free potato chips and water.
●Learned to cook.
●Talked with local people. They always know good places to do cool and cheap stuff(事情).
●Only went to free museums (only in England). Until this point in my life, I never had a clear idea of how to deal with my life. Now I do. I want to be a photographer so that I can inspire(激励) people with my pictures. Thanks to this travel. Thanks to that lady.
