Looking out of the window of my study this morning, cold hands holding a cup of coffee, I can just make out a thin layer of snow outside. In the mountains, the snow lies much, much thicker. There were even reports of snow just south of Windhoek. Yes, southern Africa is shaking- it's like someone locked us all in the freezer!

And it's not just snow. This winter, the Western Cape and Northern Cape received more rain in a single month than in full years of recent drought. 

Even though the outside covering on the top of my house is leaking in places where it has never leaked before,     ▲    . I'm making plans to go to Namaqualand this spring. Because all this rain so early means we're going to have another excellent flower season. If you've never experienced it, you need to join me and plan quickly.

Shannan，Tibet Autonomous Region， is known as the place where Tibetan Opera was born. Tashi Choten Village in Shannan has been placed one of the second group of national-level tourist  （地区） in China.  （千） of tourists go there every year. 

Tibetan Opera is an  （古老的） art, which has a high cultural value. People  （把. . . . . . 视为） it as "the living fossil" of Tibetan culture.  （记录） show that Tibetan Opera is at least 400 years older than the Peking Opera. The  （美丽） of the opera mixes Tibetan stories, folk songs, dance and others. As an important part of Tibetan culture, Tibetan Opera is often performed at important Tibetan festivals such as the Tibetan New Year. 

 （现今）, Tashi Choten Village is known as "the first Tibetan Opera village". With a history of 600 years, the Tashi Sholpa School of Tibetan Opera is the oldest school of its kind. 

In recent years, Tashi Choten Village has changed a lot. For example, a large Tibetan  （培训） school has been set up in the village's cultural square. The school wants to  （介绍） the Tashi Sholpa School of Tibetan Opera to tourists. Villagers hope that more people-  （尤其） young ones-will learn about the culture. They also hope that Tibetan Opera can be brought into the daily lives of the people and passed down. 

The Palace Museum is one of the must-see places in Beijing. It covers about 720, 000 square meters with millions of cultural relics inside its walls. However, the museum can only show a small part of its relics to the public. Experts can't fix as many cultural relics as they want. And more importantly, the museum can't provide a proper service if the number of visitors goes over 80, 000 every day. Why? Because there is not enough room inside the museum!

For nearly ten years, the Palace Museum has planned on its new building—a second home for the cultural relics, a second office for the experts and a second museum for people to visit. More than thirty kilometers away from the Palace Museum, the new museum, also called the north area of the Palace Museum, will include places for the display, restoration and storage of the cultural relics. It covers over 100, 000 square meters. Experts can work better and more visitors can see the relics. 

Although the new museum looks like a traditional Chinese building and has similar colors to the Palace Museum, it is modern and environmentally friendly. For example, it can save a lot of energy: The walls on the south side can let in a lot of air during the summer and keep it cool; during the winter, the walls on the north side can keep the cold air out and help the building stay warm. 

The construction of the new Palace Museum started in December, 2022, and it may be open to the public in 2025. The Palace Museum will be 100 years old then. The new museum will surely be a great birthday gift for it. 

Everyone wants to get better grades and be a good student. But do you know what to do? Here are some tips for smarter studying. 

When you pay attention in class, you are starting the process of studying. Make sure you 're sitting in a good seat that lets you pay attention. Tell your teacher or parents about any problem that is preventing you from paying attention and taking good notes. 

 Start by writing down facts that your teacher mentions or writes on the blackboard during class. Try your best to use good handwriting so that you can read your notes later. 

Ask for a calendar and write down due dates of your tests and assignments. You can then plan how much to do after school each day and how much time to spend on each topic. 

When there's a lot to study, it can help to break things into chunks. Let's say you have a test on 20 spelling words. Instead of thinking about all of the words at once, try breaking them down into five- word chunks and working on one or two different chunks each night. 

The test is tomorrow and you 've followed your study plan-but suddenly you can't remember anything! Don't be nervous. Your brain needs time to digest all the information you've given it. Try to get a good night's sleep and you'll be surprised by what comes back to you in the morning. 
 

One year, a British expedition got lost in the sandy ocean of the Sahara Desert. The sun was burning hot.  （大家） quickly ran out of water. If they made a wrong  （决定）, then they could all soon die.

Shadow puppet shows started in the Han Dynasty. It is  old Chinese art form and it has a long history. One day, a man saw  ( children) shadows in the sun. He got a great idea. He made a show like that. 

During a shadow puppet show,  (actor) stand behind a white screen with lights behind it. They hold the puppets very close to the screen so the people can see the puppets  (easy). 

Last week, we talked with Wang Weifang who is quite good  playing in shadow puppet shows. He told us that  was hard to hold a puppet. "You must keep it high for the whole show. You also need  (keep) your wrist at 90 degrees to make the puppet face the people. " He also taught us how to do a puppet show. 

These days, people often watch TV or  (go) to the movies. The shadow puppet show is not so  ( popular) that young people even know nothing about it. Wang and his friends work hard  they want to make more people know about the art. What great players!

① You may not know it, but there are vampires in your house right now. Luckily, they do not drink the blood of living people. Instead, these vampires quietly drain the electricity right out of your home. They come in the form of common electrical devices （电器设备）, such as TVs, washing machines, computers and cellphone chargers. They all turn into energy vampires as soon as you stop using them. 

② We all know it wastes energy to leave lights or air conditioners on when we leave a room. However, we don't think about the devices that are always on，even when they appear to be powered down. Many are designed to stay on for convenience. Our TVs are always ready to receive a signal from the remote control, and our computers are ready to wake up at the touch of a button. But this convenience comes at the cost of higher electricity bills. These increased power bills are especially unwelcome when you consider the sharp rise in energy prices over recent years. Therefore, it is certainly worth looking at ways to reduce your electricity bill. 

③ Thankfully, there is a way to fight these vampires so they no longer feed on your wallet. The easiest method is to simply unplug your devices when you're not using them. However, this may cause a little trouble if you want to use things like washing machines, fridges or TVs. 

④ Another way to fix the problem is by connecting your devices to a power strip. This works well for things like cellphone chargers and computers. When you're not using them, just cut the whole power strip off. 

⑤ However, the best way to kill energy vampires is to avoid as many of them as you can. Many devices have a level that shows how energy-efficient they are. Throw away your old devices and use newer ones that have a higher level, and then watch your electricity bills drop. 

⑥ Stopping energy vampires makes a difference to more than just your bills, though. It reduces everyone's total electricity use，which is better for the environment. So, if you want to________, start hunting those energy vampires in your house today!
