Do you know what happens in an earthquake? You can try this experiment to find out the answer.
Make an earthquake What you need A large, deep pan Two 20X40 cm strips of cloth or plastic sheet Wet sand or soil Some small toys (people, animals, cars and houses) Steps Step 1. Place cloth or plastic strips at the bottom of the pan so that they overlap. Make sure their ends stick out of opposite sides of the pan. Step 2. Place toys on top of the sand. Imagine they are people standing on the ground. Step 3. Pull salient ends of the sheets slowly and watch what happens. What happens The "ground" that the toys are standing on moves in two different directions. In some earthquakes, the ground moves in two directions along a fault line. People feel the earth move. Buildings may fall down. Toys near the middle of the pan may move or fall down. |
