Looking out of the window of my study this morning, cold hands holding a cup of coffee, I can just make out a thin layer of snow outside. In the mountains, the snow lies much, much thicker. There were even reports of snow just south of Windhoek. Yes, southern Africa is shaking- it's like someone locked us all in the freezer!
And it's not just snow. This winter, the Western Cape and Northern Cape received more rain in a single month than in full years of recent drought.
Even though the outside covering on the top of my house is leaking in places where it has never leaked before, ▲ . I'm making plans to go to Namaqualand this spring. Because all this rain so early means we're going to have another excellent flower season. If you've never experienced it, you need to join me and plan quickly.
Just ask Evan Naude, a son of the West Coast who knows about the springtime flowers. Even he felt shocked on the 75 km Namaqua Flower Hike outside Springbok when he did it last spring. The chances are excellent that this year's flowers will be even more wonderful.
South Africa is full of beautiful places, and every season has its charm. Yes, even the Cape in winter when the rain blows in strongly under your eaves. One morning the sun will come out, the wind will stop blowing and she'll put on her most beautiful green dress. As if after a big argument, she'll smile at you and say, "Still love you. I'll give you a chance to get on the top of your house and fix the leak now. "
