When I decided to buy a house in Europe ten years ago, I didn't think too long. I liked traveling in France, but when it came to picking my favorite spot to 1 , Italy was the clear winner. 

During my first visit to Italy, I 2 to ask for directions or order in a restaurant. But every time I tried to 3 a sentence of Italian together, the locals smiled at me and 4 my language skills. That encouragement helped me to get through the language 5 . After I made Italy my permanent home, I discovered how 6 Italians are. Neighbors will bring me freshly made cheese and will come to my door to 7 me to close the window in my car when rain is coming. It's these small 8 of kindness that make a new country feel like home. 

As a foodie, the way to my heart is through my stomach, and nowhere fuels my 9 quite like Italy. Each town has its own traditional 10 , and every family keeps a recipe passed from one generation to another. Families 11 for big meals on Sundays, birthdays, and whatever other excuses they can 12 . These meals are always 13 by laughter and joy. Whatever 14 life in Italy might have, the problems are 15 once you sit down to a big meal with friends and family. 

Last month,I began my own two-week-long digital detox.I got the inspiration from the tech writer Paul Miller,who got away from the Internet for a whole year.It was not worth mentioning as against the time Miller spent offline,but it was the longest I had gone through without almost any Internet in 13 years.

Why did I do it?For a while I felt the urge to try fully disconnecting to free myself from the endless work.I wanted to take a break from it all for a couple of weeks at least to see what would happen.After all,throughout the last decade,I've been online 24/7,overreacting to my email inbox and social feed(传送)—living in a world where the line between the digital world and the real world gets a bit unclear at times.

I haven't of course forgotten that I'm CEO of a social media company.My work is built around the premise(前提) that being connected makes our lives richer,more rewarding and more efficient.Still,I'd forgotten one key lesson along the way:moderation.As more and more of my life was spent scanning social feed and checking out my inbox,I realized that I needed to step back and get a whole new perspective.

So on my winter vacation to Mexico,I took a break from being active on the Internet for the entire trip.For the whole 14 days,I ate a lot of delicious fish tacos,surfed and fixed up my cottage on the beach.I didn't write or send any emails.I didn't scan any Top 10 lists of feed.The one I did give myself was checking my email inbox occasionally—just to make sure an emergency wasn't unfolding while I was away.

What I learned from my short experiment was actually not too unlike what Miller learned.I didn't end up discovering that technology is evil.In fact,I found myself reflecting on how technology over the last few years has let me experience some of the most rewarding and eventful moments of my life.

I was born legally blind.Of all the stories of my early childhood,the one about a 1 ,is my mother's favorite.

Barrington Irving made his historic flight and founded an educational non-profit-making organization.The secret,he believes,is having a dream in the first place,and that starts with learning experiences that inspire kids to build careers.

The moment of inspiration for Irving came in his parents' bookstore.One customer,a professional pilot,asked Irving if he'd thought about becoming a pilot."I told him I didn't think I was smart enough;but the next day he took me to the cockpit(驾驶舱)of the commercial airplane he flew,and just like that I was hooked."

To follow his dream,Irving turned down a football scholarship to the University of Florida.He washed airplanes to earn money and increased his flying skills by practising at home on a $40 flight simulator(模拟) video game.Then another dream took hold:flying alone around the world.He faced more than 50 rejections for sponsorship before convincing some companies to donate aircraft components.He took off with no weather radar,no de-icing system(除冰系统),and just $30 in his pocket.

After 97 days,26 stops and dozens of thunderstorms,he touched down to a cheering crowd in Miami."It was seeing so many young people watching and listening that pushed me into giving back with my knowledge and experience." Irving has been doing it ever since.He set up his non-profit-making organization,Experience Aviation(航空),aiming to increase the numbers of youth in aviation and science-related careers."We want to create chances for students to accomplish something amazing,"he notes.The most powerful educational tool is the example his own life provides.

For many people, the perfect career would be one in which they do what they love to make a living, but 1 , not many have either the luck or the luxury to do so, given 2 concerns and other considerations. Freelance (自由职业的) digital cartoonist Lian Zongbo is fully3 of the risks, but decided to pursue his dream, anyway.

Harry is an American businessman. His job  (require) him to do a lot of traveling In the past six months he has made nine trips,  purpose is to attend meetings and make presentations. Harry loves to travel and feels each country has a charm of its own. After graduation, Harry decided to make travel part of his career. He wanted to experience different cultures of other  (country). He was dreaming of working for an international company. Then his dream came true.

Open water swimming

I had only swum in open water a few times, and always in gentle lakes, so I wasn't prepared for how rough Lake Windermere appeared on a cold day. A swimmer told me the water felt colder than it had been measured, and that the water was a bit rough. But I, along with 10,000 others, was about to complete the challenge.

Most of the people taking part were doing a one-mile race, and 10 races were planned over the weekend. There seemed to be a mix of open-water enthusiasts alongside complete beginners—which is precisely the aim of the swims, to get as many people as possible completing their own challenge. The oldest woman competing was 77, taking part in the two-mile race, alongside a man who last year had swum in every one-mile race.

I had chosen the third one-mile race of the day. There were over 600 people in my race. We were taken through an acclimatization area, a children's paddling pool-sized part of the lake where we moved in to feel how cold the water was. "Not too bad" was everyone's thought! Then we headed out towards the middle of the lake.

We'd been warned that the first 100 metres would be really rough. However, somewhere near the 750m mark I was still waiting for the calm; it felt more like swimming in the sea than a lake. I tried to focus on my breathing and technique, and just keep going. As I approached the 400m-to-go mark my lower right leg became painful. I recalled overhearing people talking about how they kept swimming through the pain, so I tried. But it didn't work. I began to feel the entire leg tight and painful. I didn't want to stop, so I bent my right knee and just kicked with the left leg.

Finally I saw the finishing post, and I just concentrated on getting there—still one-legged. My finishing time was 38 minutes 25 seconds but that didn't matter—the atmosphere was fantastic and everyone felt a sense of achievement, whatever their time. I'm hooked, and want to give it another go. I've already signed up for my next open-water swim.

Driving to Palm Springs two years ago, I met a snowstorm. A car suddenly changed the direction  (avoid) hitting mine and drifted (漂移) towards the side of the cliff. Meanwhile, some drivers (sit) in different cars rushed out. They (take) off the chains that had protected their own tyres and put them on that car's tyres (rapid). Just as the car was about to be lost off the cliff, those drivers stepped up, letting their kind hearts go beyond the snowstorm.

A few weeks ago, I received a package containing seeds from my friend. When I asked her what they would 1 into, a smile crossed her face. "Just plant them and be patient. You'll see for yourself 2 !" she said.

I sowed the seeds in a flowerpot. In the first few days, I was very excited to search for the slightest signs, but 3 happened. With heavy loads of homework, I began to feel sad and 4 . How much I longed for the color in my fast-paced life.

I watered the plants in dry periods. On the eighth day, to my great 5 , a few light green sprouts (新芽) appeared. Bending down and studying the plants, I could almost hear them growing. More days passed, and the flowerpot soon became 6 with coriander (香菜) plants. Now they are taller than the edge of the pot, constantly shaking their leaves in the gentle wind, as if they were merrily singing a song of 7 .

I am certain that after a few more days, my plants will be ready for8 . These plants have played an important part in 9 up my everyday life. They may not be a main dish on our table, but using some will surely make our dishes delicious.

Let us all slow our pace down and be patient. So long as we take steps to set our hearts free, time and patience will 10 us with the pure pleasure of being alive in this lovely world.
