Were you ever told to stop daydreaming and concentrate in school life? It was easy for your mind to wander if you weren't interested in what you were learning or if you had better things to think about. Fortunately, understanding how to deal with it, and knowing what is distracting(使分心) you, can help. 

Scientists have looked at what makes us distracted and found a number of ways to help us grown-ups stay in the zone. Research by Science Focus magazine found it helpful to seat yourself at a quiet coffee bar working on your laptop. It also found turning off notifications on your phone, or switching it off altogether, removed a major distraction and helped us focus on the task at hand. 

 Psychologists are increasingly interested in our ability to get wholly absorbed in our work and have looked at what we can change inside our head to make us concentrate. According to their findings, making a task more visually demanding works a lot. Our brain may get the signal that the task takes up more processing power and leaves it nothing left to process distractions. 

There are more practical tips to keep you focused. Make a reasonable list or timetable of the tasks you have to do. Find a workspace where you're not tempted to do other things. It's possible that the movement in your mouth occupies parts of the brain that might otherwise get distracted. 

As adults, we are trying so hard to avoid being distracted. However, distraction isn't all bad. If we were always so focused that we never got distracted, we'd miss potential changes, such as threats, in our environment. .

My grandmother moved into an old people's home and I visited her there. She was sitting in the living room with other residents, half of them asleep. The room was clean and the care assistants were kind and cheerful. A general knowledge quiz show was on the television and the only other sounds were snoring (打呼噜). Grandma talked a lot about how much she missed her grandson but I hated going to visit her there and, to be honest, I couldn't wait to get away myself. 

So I was interested to read a newspaper article about a new concept in old people's homes in France. The idea is simple, but revolutionary—combining an old people's home with a nursery school in the same building. The children and the residents eat lunch together and share activities such as painting and gardening. In the afternoons, the residents enjoy reading or telling stories to the children, and if a child is feeling sad or tired, there is always a kind lap to sit on. Nowadays there is less and less contact between the old and the young. There are many reasons for this, but the result is the same: increasing numbers of children without grandparents and old people having no contact with children, and more old people who feel lonely and useless, along with more and more families with young children who desperately need more support. It's a major problem in many societies. 

That's why intergenerational programmes, designed to bring the old and the young together, are growing in popularity all over the world. There are examples of successful initiatives. Young people teaching IT skills to older people is one obvious example. Old people working as volunteer assistants in schools is another, perhaps reading with children who need extra attention. 

The advantages are enormous. The children are happy because they get more individual attention. They also see illness and death and learn to accept them. The residents are happy because they feel useful and more interested in life. There will be less conflict in a community if older people can understand the youth, and vice versa. 

Now we need to rediscover what "community" really means. Then perhaps getting old won't be such a depressing prospect after all.

For many people, having children can force them to choose between career and family. Sometimes it comes down to finances — sending a child to nursery or hiring a nanny can be a huge financial burden, while others may feel it's better to be a hands-on parent. These days, more and more men are choosing to stay at home to look after the kids. So why are more dads choosing to put their careers on hold, and what does the job involve?

With more women working outside the home than 70 years ago, if the need is there for one parent to stay at home, it could simply come down to who earns more — the biggest breadwinner. And with attitudes changing towards a man's role in the family, it seems to be easier for them to enter full-time parenthood. Sadly, though, many men still feel shamed by choosing to raise their child. A study in the US by the Pews Research Center found that 51% of people thought children were better off if a mother stayed at home. But what do parents have to do when they choose to stay with their kids?

In the early stages, a baby is totally dependent on a carer. The changing of nappies(尿布), burping after milk and making sure they feed on time are just some of the vital 24 -7 activities a baby relies on. During this period, many parents take paternity and maternity leave from work. But as a child gets older, it can become less about necessity and more about choice. Rather than choose a creche(日托中心), which can prove expensive, either parent may remain at home to educate, protect and play with their children to help them develop and grow. 

It's a difficult job, with a demanding boss, but it can also be incredibly rewarding for those willing to do it. And with attitudes changing towards who should stay at home, maybe more and more fathers will choose to become stay-at-home dads.

Few businesses can run without computers, giving keyboard shortcuts an incredible importance. Schools view typing courses as necessary. But what are we giving up as handwriting loses its significance?

Brain power, according to science. Researchers from Princeton University and the University of California conducted a series of studies to demonstrate the differences between students who wrote out their notes and those who typed them. Study participants took notes on a lecture using one of the two methods and were tested 30 minutes after the lecture, and again a week later. 

The results showed both types of notetakers did well on the first test. The longhand notetakers had a stronger grasp of the overall concept. Students with the handwritten notes were also able to better remember and understand the concept of the lecture a week later, and were more open to understanding new ideas. 

According to Pam Mueller, lead author of the study, "Our findings suggest even when laptops are used as intended, they may still be harming academic performance." Part of the reason is that it was faster to take notes on the laptop, using exactly the same words meant they weren't truly engaged in the content. But notetakers using pen and paper tended to digest the material better and could rephrase it in their own words. 

Although typing notes using exactly the same words can help in recalling facts in the short term, it takes the focus away from the main points of the lesson. "Ironically, the feature that makes their laptop notetaking so attractive— the ability to take notes more quickly —was what weakened learning," educational psychologist Dr. Kenneth Kiewra told the Wall Street Journal. 

Computers aren't going away soon, but that doesn't mean paper notebooks become outdated. In fact, it is best to start using them at an early age. University of Indiana researchers compared brain scans of five-year-olds -some who practiced the printing letters, and some who just looked at the letters. Those who wrote out the letters had more enhanced and adult-like brain activity.

There was a time when color photography wasn't taken seriously. In the 1960s, it had no place in the art world, black-and-white took over. The work of a few pioneers changed this prejudice, chief among whom was Joel Meyerowitz, one of the earliest and most successful advocates of color. He held the (believe) that the world was in color and one should take pictures of the world as it looked. 

In 1966, Meyerowitz drove across Europe(arm) with two cameras: one with color film, one with black-and-white. During the trip, he took 25, 000 photographs over 700 rolls of film, half of which(be) in color. Whenever there was a chance, he would make pairs of pictures in both formats(compare) them. 

As he was editing the color films from that trip, his preference was getting  (strong). Within the next couple of years, he turned to color almost completely, by 1971 he waved goodbye to black-and-white.

While pushing for color, Meyerowitz made his name a street photographer by capturing the vibrant, colorful drama of everyday life in New York City. "The mix of life on the street offers untold opportunity to observe human nature. A street photographer makes the most of what he(give), any time he goes out in the street," he said.

At a medical laboratory clinic in Waterloo, Ontario, an elderly woman sat in the waiting room singing the tune "My Heart Will Go On."

I watched how people 1 , There was a lot of shifting in seats, but mainly they awkwardly avoided their eyes and tried to2 that there was nothing out of the ordinary going on.

Prague, Czech Republic

With its snow-capped towers and cobbled winding streets, Prague is a fairytale city that remains relatively tourist-free in winter. The unusual and impressive architecture looks even prettier under a sheet of snow. Gas street lamps throughout the city center add a romantic color to evenings. Cafes here are ideal for escaping the bitter cold. The fascinating Estates Theatre, where Mozart conducted the world premiere(首演) of "Don Giovanni" in 1787, is a must. 

Tromso, Norway

Tromso, known as the capital of the Arctic, is great in winter. It's widely regarded as Norway's most beautiful city and is a base for spotting the northern lights. There are also fascinating museums, including the Polar Museum, which offers an insight into the history of Arctic expeditions, and the Tromso Museum, famous for its Sami exhibitions.

In winter, Amsterdam's museums are much less crowded, making it the time to visit attractions such as Rijksmuseum or the Anne Frank House. Built originally to house a circus, the Royal Carré Theatre is more than 130 years old. Children will love the spectacular performances.

Cobbled streets, a beautiful castle and lovely public gardens make Edinburgh a beautiful city any time of year, but in winter it's breathtaking. Princes Street Gardens is transformed into a wonderland, with ice skating rinks, enormous Christmas trees and a Ferris wheel. On the edge of the city, Arthur's Seat is the perfect location for a winter walk and the views from the top are second to none.

After I had pictured my first day at senior high over and over again my mind, the day finally arrived. I was eager （know）my new school.

I was said to be the worst student in my class and my family thought I was hopeless. I had to repeat the sixth grade. At that time a new teacher, Miss Sadia, came to our school.

One day after class, she noticed that I was staying alone during the lunch break. She came to me and began to talk to me. It was just a normal conversation: After that day, she gave me much attention and it made me feel special. I started to go all out because she gave me the feeling that someone believed me, and my grades started to improve in her subject.

Months later, she moved into a house near my home. We would walk home together after start school. Her constant support helped me, especially in my studies, as I knew she would check my grades both in her subject and the other subjects. I finally came second in my class.

Then, after the sixth grade，she started to drift apart but still kept a check on me. By the time I was in the seventh grade，she hardly spoke to me, but by then I had become the best in my class. When I left school, I was out of touch with her as she never answered the phone when I called her.

Then I graduated and went to a good university. One fine day，our paths crossed again. I met her at a wedding. I could not help asking her，"Why did you stop talking to me？"

"You are a clever boy. I wanted you to be a tree standing on your own roots, not depending on others. Now here you are and I feel proud of you.You are your inspiration and do not need to look for a shoulder,"she said. I could not say anything,but I smiled. I'll always thank her.
