It was in autumn. A woman was ill. She 1 in the hospital. Her husband died ten years ago. She had no sons 2 daughters. Nobody 3 her. She felt very 4 .There was a tree outside her room. She saw the leaves fall down. Day after day, there were fewer and fewer leaves 5 the tree. The woman was very sad. She didn't want to eat or drink. She became worse day by day. She got a strong feeling of death. One day, she said, "When the last leaf falls down, I 6 die."

    An old artist knew that. He decided 7 this woman. One night, all yellow leaves fell down. The artist painted a green and yellow leaf and then put it in the tree. The next morning, 8 the woman looked out of the window and saw the last leaf, she was filled with 9. She wanted to be alive. She didn't want to fall down like 10 leaves. From then on，she became better and better and lived well.

    When I woke up, I was surprised to discover that I was in in my own room. Somebody had put me there when I was 1. The same had happened to Ned and Conseil. Capital Nemo did not 2 until about two o'clock. When he came out in front of us, he didn't explain anything.

    "Are you a doctor?" he asked me. 3 had studied medicine in Paris. When I told him that, he asked me to help one of his men. I followed him to another 4.

    "He is going to die soon," I said. "5 can save him." Tears filled Capital Nemo's eyes, and he asked me to leave the room first.

The next day, he 6 me to go with him for another walk under the water. I agreed, and my 7friends decided to come, too. We went out and found that we were not on sand but on coral(珊瑚).We used our lights to go 8into the ocean. Some of the crew had come with us. Four of them 9 the coffin(棺材) of the man who had died. We walked for two hours and stopped 10 we reached 300 meters. This is where coral begins to 11. Some of the crew had brought tools with them, and they dug a hole in the coral. They placed the coffin in it. Then, they 12 the coffin with rocks. I could see that there had been other burials(埋葬) here 13. We returned to the Nautilus. "Your 14friend is safe from sharks," I said to Capital Nemo. "And from men!" he added 15.

    I began to think that Nemo was not just keeping away from humans in his Nautilus. He was planning revenge(复仇).

    Susan was a lively girl. She worked as a 1. She was once the most beautiful girl in her hospital. Many young 2 liked her and wanted to marry (娶）her. People could 3 see her sweet smiles.

But one day everything changed. She 4 a car accident and her was disfigured (毁容). She felt quite 5 and stayed at home all day. She didn't want to 6 anyone.

Her parents were afraid she would go 7. So one day they took her to “Blind (盲的) Children's Home”. She played with the blind children that afternoon and for the first time after the accident her parents 8 her happy look.     Susan cried all the way home in the car, but it was with happiness. Susan changed in the end. Smiles came back to her face again.

    Last night I didn't feel well. I thought I had a 1. This morning, I didn't want to eat anything. So I 2. After the doctor looked me over carefully, he gave me some 3 and told me it was nothing serious but I had to 4 in bed for a day. But I 5 my lessons in the school and I wanted to tell my teacher about it. So I wrote a note (便条)for a day 6 and asked my sister to take it to the teacher. It was time to have 7. I felt a little 8 but I only had some noodles. In the evening，I felt much better. I thought I should 9 the text that I should learn today.10 I sat on the sofa and read for an hour. I really want to go to school tomorrow.

    I became a magician by accident. When I was nine years old, I learned 1 to make a coin disappear. I'd read The Lord of the Rings and went into the2  to look for a book about spells(符咒). Nine was a strange age when you were 3enough to think that you might find a book of real, actual magic in the library. But in fact, the book I 4 taught me something about magic, and I spent the next months practicing.

    At first the magic wasn't any 5 . It wasn't even magic; it was only a trick-- a bad trick. I 6hours each day in the bathroom running through the secret moves in front of the mirror. I dropped the coin thousands of 7in a day, and after two weeks of this, my mom got a carpet and placed it under the mirror to lower the sound of the coin 8again and again.

    I heard my dad play pieces of new music on the piano, 9 I knew how to practice -- slowly, going for precision(精确) rather than speed. One day I tried the magic in the mirror and the 10disappeared. It did not look like a magic trick. It 11like a miracle.

    One of the lessons I learn very early as a magician is that the most 12 part of a trick has nothing to do with the secret. The secret is simple: a hidden piece of tape, a small mirror, a special playing card. In this case, the 13was a series of tricks to hide the coin behind my hand in the act of opening it, a dance of the fingers that I learned so 14 that I didn't even have to think. I would close my hand, then 15it, and the coin would disappear not by skill but by real magic.

    One day, my English teacher asked me to help her save back—up(备份)copies of her work in the computer. I then realized I was able to know the grades of all of her students. I 1 her how to copy files from one disk to another and she thanked me.

    A few days later, she asked me to help her again, because she 2 how to do it. When I showed it to her, some students in my class 3 and began to talk among themselves 4.

    Later that day, at lunchtime, several of them came up to me.

    "Hey, could you help us change our grades? We'll 5 for it."

    I could not believe what I heard. I could get paid for something very 6. "All right. I'll do it." The next day, my English teacher 7 me to help her out again. When she was not paying 8, I changed their grades from Fs to As.

    I soon became very 9 among my friends. They began to treat me like God who could do 10. Words spread quickly and I became very rich.

    Everything was going fine 11 I was called into the headmaster's office. When I got there, both my teacher and the headmaster were very angry. "I've known you for three years. I don't want to believe what your teacher said, but I have to. She has too much evidence(证据)," the headmaster12 . "Do you have anything to say for yourself?"

    "No." I said finally. I didn't realize how 13 my behavior had been. I had disappointed (使……失望) my teacher and the headmaster. And there was no way 14. I had to leave my school. That was a good15 for me.

    The teacher sent me home with a note for my mother that said I needed to visit the eye doctor because I failed the vision test. The trip home that day was very slow.

    My mother said it would all be just fine. "It wouldn't hurt a bit," she said. But I wasn't worried about pain-I was worried about looking 1.

    The next day, my mother pulled me to the eye doctor's office. I 2 a set of frames (镜框) and tried to believe my mother when she said they looked really 3 on me. The doctor said the glasses would be ready soon. But I wasn't ready at all, and I didn't think I ever would be.

    When the glasses arrived, the eye doctor put them on my face and walked me out onto the sidewalk in front of his office. When I looked 4 from my shoes, I found myself in a whole new world – a world filled with 5 pictures, bright colours, and fine detail everywhere I looked. Suddenly I 6 the beautiful outline of red leaves on trees. I could see the details of people's faces long before they were standing in front of me. I could see my mother 7 as she watched me see the world in a whole new way.

    "Glasses aren't so bad, are they? " Mom asked.

    "Not at all, " I thought to myself. On that first day, they were a 8.

    The Monday morning came, and I had to 9 the kids in my classroom. And it happened, just like I feared it would be. A mean kid pointed at me in the middle of the maths class and shouted, "Four 10!" But at the same moment, looking through my new glasses, I could see all the way across the room that the kid who had said it had an awfully big nose.

    Our teacher asked us what our favorite animal was, and I said," Fried chicken" She said I wasn't funny, but she wasn't1, because everyone else laughed.

    My parents told me to always be truthful and I am. Fried chicken is my favorite 2. I told my dad what happend, and he said my teacher was probably a (n) 3 of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef. 4 my teacher sent me to the principal's office (校长室). I told him what happened, and he 5, too. Then he told me not to do it again.

    The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was. I told her it was chicken. She asked me6, just like she'd asked the other children. I told her it was because people could 7 them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal's office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again. I don't 8. My parents taught me to be honest, 9 my teacher doesn't like it when I am.

    Today, my teacher asked us to tell her what famous person10 like(s) most.

    I told her, "Colonel Sanders (肯德基创始人)."

One evening, a boy and his grandfather went for a walk. As they walked, they found a pair of old shoes on the road. They thought the shoes must 1 a farmer who was working nearby. The boy said, "Let's 2 a joke on him. We can hide the shoes and see what he will do." But his grandfather said, "Boy, we shouldn't have 3 by hurting other people. 4, we should help them. Let's put a coin in each shoe, and then hide ourselves to see what will happen."

    The boy did as 5 his grandfather said. Later, the farmer finished his work and came back to his shoes. He put his foot into one of his shoes, and then he felt something 6. He was surprised to find a coin in his shoe. Then he found 7 coin. He said 8, "Thank goodness! I can give them to my wife."

    After seeing this, the boy's eyes were 9 of tears. The boy said, "Grandpa, you taught me a 10 which I will never forget. It's more blessed (幸福) to give than to receive."

    Hannah Taylor is a schoolgirl from Manitoba, Canada. One day, when she was five years old, she was walking with her mother in downtown Winnipeg. They saw a man eating out of a garbage can. She asked her mother why he did that, and her mother said that the man was homeless and hungry. Hannah was very 1. She couldn't understand why some people had to live their lives without shelter or enough food. Hannah started to think about how she could 2, but of course, there is not a lot one five-year-old can do to solve the problem of homelessness.

    Later, when Hannah attended school, she saw another homeless person. It was a woman 3 an old shopping trolley (购物车) which was piled with bags. It seemed that everything the woman owned was in them. This made Hannah very sad, and even more 4 to do something. She had been talking to her mother about the lives of homeless people since they first saw the homeless man. Her mother told her that if she did something to change the problem that made her sad, she wouldn't feel as bad.

    Hannah began to speak out about the homelessness in Manitoba and then in other provinces. She hoped to 5 her message of hope and awareness. She started the Ladybug Foundation, an organization aiming at getting rid of homelessness. She began to host "Big Bosses" lunches where she would try to persuade local business leaders to 6 to the cause. She also organized a fund raising drive in "Ladybug Jars" to collect everyone's spare change during "Make Change" month. More recently, the foundation began another activity called National Red Scarf Day—a day when people donate $20 and wear red scarves in support of Canada's hungry and homeless.

    There is an emergency shelter in Winnipeg called "Hannah's Place", something that she is very 7 of. Hannah Places is divided into several areas, providing shelter for people when it's so cold that sleeping outdoors can mean death. In the more than five years since Hannah began her activities, she has received a lot of 8. For example, she received the 2007 BRICK Award recognizing the 9 of young people to change the world. But through all this, Hannah still has the life of a Winnipeg school girl, except that she pays regular visits to homeless people.
