"This Saturday, we'll be visiting cats at the animal shelter. If you'd like to join us, here's an application form", said Ms. Delgado, the school librarian who had held the reading engagement event for students.

Ben loved cats and he had always wanted one, so he hurried to take an application form. Then Ms. Delgado added, "We'll be reading to the cats and award readers who make most progress." Ben stopped. Reading al oud can be a challenging task. Ben might feel his heart racing, his palms sweating, and his voice shaking as he read. He might stumble over words or lose his place in the text. He might feel like everyone was watching him and judging him. Still, he really wanted to visit the cats, so he took an application form anyway.

On Saturday, Ben arrived at the shelter with some of his classmates. "This is Max," the shelter worker told Ben as she handed him a gray cat. Ben carried Max to a beanbag chair and sat down. Max settled onto his lap. He took a book he'd been working on and started reading. Max, very different from other cats walking around the room while the kids read, purred (发出呼噜声) on his lap as if he had understood what Ben read.

"I'm glad Max is staying and listening to my reading and he is the best cat ever," Ben told Dad excitedly. "I'm glad you two are friends," Dad said. All week, Ben's heart was filled with anxiety as he waited for Saturday to arrive. He was eager to read to Max and the anticipation of spending time with his feline (猫咪的) friend made him restless and nervous. When it arrived, Ben got to read to Max again.

"What if someone adopts Max?" Ben asked Dad later. "I guess you'd read to a different cat," Dad said. "But I don't want a different cat. I wish we could adopt Max," Ben said to Dad. He knew they couldn't because Mom had allergies (过敏). Ben loved the cat so much that he even told his next-door neighbor, Mrs. Patel, about Max. "Max sounds like a special cat," said Mrs. Patel.

Week by week, Ben realized that reading seemed easier with Max's company.

"One dollar and eleven cents, " Michelle answered in a low voice. "And it's all the money I have, but I can some more if I need to."

"Well " smiled the man. "A dollar and eleven cents— the exact price of a miracle for little brothers. Show me the place where your brothers lives."

A Change of Heart

It was a cold winter and my family had a tough struggle. Mum had a bitter time raising us kids by herself in our small community as dad passed away five years earlier. We relied on social assistance.

Looking back, I realized what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would place a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because our shoes were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us. Constant moving was typical for my family in those days, and it didn't look like we'd be in our current house much longer. Rent was $25 a month, but Mum couldn't pay it, and we knew we would be forced to leave right after Christmas on the first of January.

The holidays were fast approaching, and we were given $25 for Christmas from social services. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our rent. That way we'd have a roof over our heads for a little while longer. Then she told us that there would be no Christmas gifts.

Unbeknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling （铲） snow and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch, Top-Genuine, Pierre Paris boots, and they cost $23.

The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried up the road to catch the bus into town. It was only a half-mile walk, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then that I realized at our house, we had no lights, no decorations and no turkey or ham for Christmas dinner.

As I continued walking, I began to feel strangely ashamed.

Right after dinner on the first day at camp, everyone was busy packing their bags in preparation for the night walk, Danny headed to the canteen to get a bottle of iced tea. Just as Danny was about to secure the bottle cap, he was caught off-guard as someone suddenly brushed past him and hit his arm. The bottle slipped out of his hands and fell to the floor. Light brown liquid flowed out, creating ugly mess on the floor. Danny caught a flash of a boy in a green T-shirt running off into the distance. "How rudely," Danny shouted, gritting his teeth "Not even an apology!"

Just then, Mr Halim, the camp guide, approached Danny. "What are you doing here inste-"he asked but stopped midway when he saw the mess on the floor. "It wasn't me!" Danny raised his voice in his defence. "You'll fix this mess you created before we head out for the night walk,"Mr Halim remarked, walking off in a hurry before Danny could explain himself.

"How unfortunate," Danny thought to himself, "It wasn't even my fault to begin with. Getting down on his knees, he started wiping up the mess. Twenty minutes passed and the floor was dry. Danny managed to calm himself down and think clearly. He recalled how Father had given him a second chance when he broke his vase by mistake a week ago. Realizing that what had happened just now might have been an accident, Danny resolved to let the past rest.

As Danny got up to leave, he saw the boy in the green T-shirt approaching him.

The two friends dove in, and splashed(泼水) around happily. They found some logs of wood floating on the river, and tried floating with them. It was then that something unexpected happened.

The next day, Mike met his teammates on the playground. The coach taught them how to kick and run after the ball. He taught them how to throw the ball in from the sidelines, using two hands while keeping both feet on the ground. Finally, they had a practice game.

It turned out that playing football was a lot harder than it looked. Every time Mike was about to kick the ball, someone else kicked it away from him. When Mike threw the ball in from the sideline, he forgot to keep both feet on the ground. The only thing that Mike was good at was cheering. Whoever scored, he would jump up and cheer for them.

On the weekend, Mike's team was invited to take part in its first real competition with the Sun. Mike's family all came to watch. Mike chased the ball up and down, with excitement. It came as no surprise that their team lost the match. Even so, he kept cheering for anyone who scored.

After the game, his sister came over and reminded Mike that he needed to be a real football player, not just a cheerleader. Meanwhile, his coach told Mike that if he tried to do more practice and cooperate with his teammates, he could be a better football player, too.

I was shocked about Jeff's bad behavior towards Mom. How unsympathetic he was! Our washing machine had been out of order for two months. Because our parents were on a tight budget and were too busy, they still didn't buy a new one. So recently our family had to wash our clothes by hand, which was time-wasting and truly hard work. 

Just when I decided to scold（训斥）my little brother, Dad came home from work, and I told him what had happened. 

Dad was upset and felt sorry for Mom, knowing how hard she worked all day. She was a saleswoman in a supermarket and did all she could to support our family. Often, Dad tried to help with some of the housework. He didn't want Mom to have too much burden, knowing her heavy work as a saleswoman. I also tried to spare time to help do housework, sharing some of the family burden. However, Jeff was a lazy and naughty（淘气）boy, who hardly did housework.

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She ran a small shop at a flea market and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed.

This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door. It was my mom! And still with her one eye! It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom's eye. I screamed at her, "Who are you? I don't know you! How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter!" To this, my mom quietly answered, "Oh, I'm so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address," and she disappeared out of sight. 

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. After the reunion, I went down to my old house, just out of curiosity. There I found my mom fallen on the cold ground. I did not shed a single tear. 

Then a piece of paper in her hand came into my eyes. It was a letter to me.

I think my life has been long enough now, and I won't visit Seoul anymore. 

You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident and lost your eye.

Mom pulled into our driveway, and turned toward me, "Well, I know a little about Jenny. She and her little brother have been together in foster care (寄养家庭). So close were they that every time they moved, Jenny would say that as long as they were together, they had a family." My heart sank as Mom continued, "Jenny's stepfather (继父) came for her brother this week, with gifts, hugs and big plans for their future. But Jenny wasn't even part of his big plans." My chest felt tight. "Poor Jenny, not to have a family." I was close to tears. My mother patted my knee. "That's it, honey. You got it." And I did.

I decided that I should do something. I proposed that we organize a team gathering before the tournament. Each member was to write a heartfelt message for every teammate and prepare a special gift for the one they felt most connected to. I made sure that Jenny would come. It took some persuading, though.

The day of the tournament arrived.

It took a day's drive, but distance was beside the point. I always enjoyed long journeys in my father's car with my family. However, things went different that time. We were moving to a new town, not for any tourist destination, but to settle down, for my father had a new job there. My mother, sitting on the passenger seat in the front, was talking with my father. She looked excited for the coming new life. But I was down, feeling nervous about starting a new school life. Entering a new school meant adapting to a completely different environment and meeting new classmates and teachers, which I was not good at. 

On my first day at the new school, I felt lost and out of place. The students already knew each other well, and they chatted happily during breaks. I missed my old friends terribly and wished I could go back to my old school. Feeling lonely. I often spent time alone during breaks and after classes, reading books in the library or drawing pictures in the art room. I missed the good days I had with my old friends and longed for that sense of belonging. 

As the days went by, I still found it hard to fit in. I was shy and found it difficult to strike up conversations with my classmates. Some of the kids in my class noticed my discomfort and tried to be friendly, but I couldn't shake off the feeling of being an outsider. I only had words with my desk mate, Alex, when necessary. Things took a turn for the worse when I knocked off Alex's water bottle by accident, although I picked up the bottle immediately and apologized to him. He got mad at me and seemed not to forgive me. Soon I found we were avoiding each other.
