The Gratitude Jar

Once upon a time in a small town,there lived a woman named Emily.Emily was known for her warm smile and compassionate heart.Despite facing life's challenges,she carried an atmosphere of gratitude that inspired everyone who knew her.

One day,Emily came across)an old,dusty jar in the comer of an antique shop.Interested, she picked it up and noticed a small label that read."The Gratitude Jar."The shopkeeper explained that the jar was meant for collecting moments of gratitude—tiny notes that captured the essence(本质)of thankfulness.

Excited by the idea,Emily decided to start a journey of gratitude.Each day.before the sun dipped below the horizon,she would sit down with her Gratitude Jar and reflect on the blessings of the day.From the warmth of the morning sun to the laughter of children playing in the park.Emily found joy in the simple things.She set down the joy in different tiny notes and put them into the jar.

As the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months.Emily's jar began to fill with an abundance of notes of gratitude.She was amazed at how her perspective on life had shifted.(Instead of thinking about what she lacked)Emily focused on the richness of what she had—the love of family.the support of friends,and the beauty of the world around her.

One chilly autumn evening,Emily faced an unexpected challenge.The news of a job loss cast a shadow over her sunny disposition.Feeling a mix of uncertainty and fear,Emily sat down with her Gratitude Jar.wondering if she could find anything to be thankful for in such a trying time.

Two weeks after the application,she received a letter for her new employment.

That night, I quarreled with my mother, then stormed out of the house. While on the road, I remembered that I did not have any money in my pocket, I did not even take my cell phone with me to make a call home.

At the same time, I went through a noodle shop, and I suddenly felt very hungry. I wished for a bowl of noodles, but I had no money!

The seller saw me standing before the counter and asked, "Hey little girl, you want to eat a bowl?"

"But … but I do not carry money …" I shyly replied.

"Okay, I'll treat you." the seller said, "come in, I will cook you a bowl."

A few minutes later the owner brought me a steaming bowl of noodles. After eating some pieces, I cried.

"What is it?" He asked.

"Nothing. I am just touched by your kindness!" I said as I wiped my tears. "Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles, and my mother, after a quarrel, chased me out of the house. She is cruel (残忍的)!!"

The seller sighed, "Girl, why did you think so? Think again. I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you felt that way. Your mother has been taking care of you since you were little, why were you not grateful and why did you hurt your mom?"

I was really surprised after hearing that.

Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, and my mother has raised me since I was little and I have never felt so, not even a little.

When arriving home, I saw my mother sitting at the dinner table, worried and tired.

It is hard not to thirst for victory in all your efforts when the world seems so competitive, especially if you're a boy growing up with those values. A boy grew up in a similar environment where winning was all that was valued, and he longed to succeed. The boy was good at running, so he called everyone in the nearby villages for a race. A large group of people from around came to see this exciting event! 

The boy had been training hard for this race. He ran among the strongest boys from around the villages, and it looked like heat on a finish line, but the young boy came out victorious! The crowd went wild with joy as they cheerfully waved (挥舞) flags praising him. The boy loved the attention. It made him feel happy and vital (生气勃勃的). 

But among the crowd was a wise older man who did not seem as impressed with the boy's fleets (舰队) as the rest. Just as the boy thought all the races for the day were over, the old man shouted from the crowd, "There is one more race left, the most important one." The boy was firstly surprised by the additional race, but he was confident he could win any race. 

The old man brought two new competitors for the boy, a blind man and a weak old lady. "I can easily win them," the boy said. When the boy crossed the finish line, the blind man was still at the start, and the old lady had just started to move. The boy got his victory but he noticed that the crowd wasn't cheering. The boy was shocked. So, he asked the old man what had happened. The old man said, "Let's start the race again, but all three of you finish together this time."

The boy raced again.

The wise old man put his hands around the boy's shoulders. 

Although Anderson started his business with strong passion, his business broke down just after several months, He didn't start any new work ever since. His teacher got to know about that and called him to his home. 

The teacher asked, "Why don't you start some other work?"

Anderson replied. "I gave my everything to my business and yet it didn't make it."

The teacher tried to comfort him, saying "But that's life. Sometimes we get success and sometimes we don't. This doesn't mean that we stop working."

"What's the significance of doing work, when I can't be sure of success?" Anderson re-plied with a bit of annoyance. 

The teacher took Anderson to a room and showed him a dead tomato plant. Confused. Anderson said, "It's dead. Why are you showing it to me?"

The teacher replied, "When I sowed its seed, I did everything right for it. I watered it, fertilized it, sprayed it with pesticide (杀虫剂). I took great care of it but it still died." He paused for a while and then continued. "Doing work is the same... No matter how hard you try, you cannot decide what happens in the end. However, you can control those things in your hands. Just do your best!"

Anderson asked, "But if there is no guarantee of success then what's the use of doing anything?"

The teacher said. "You'd better not think like that..."

"What's wrong with that... I have given so much hard work, so much money, so much times if success is only a matter of chance, then what is the use of doing so much?" said Anderson, being about to leave.

Just then the teacher stopped him and said, "Before you leave, I want to show you one more thing."

The Making of a Believer

It was Christmas Eve morning, and I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Baby-Girl, who is chubby and cute, fond of sitting in her one-and-only spot near the nearth (壁炉). AS I got ready, I could hear icy rain pouring down. I said a quick prayer for Baby-Girl. She was out there somewhere in the storm, I could just feel it. Sure, it had been six months since she'd gone missing, but I still had faith. It was the season for miracles, after all.

That summer, my sweet cat had disappeared from my parents' house in Indiana. Baby-Girl had been staying with them. At the time, I lived and worked in Washington, D. C.  Baby-Girl had gotten out of my parents' house three days before I was set to fly back home to pick her up.

My dad and I spent that entire visit searching for her. Dad was the family's resident "realistic", which mean the spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. She's either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found her" he said. I rolled my eyes. Dad always supported me, but he was so skepticat. He could do with a little more faith!

Besides, though I couldn't explain it, I knew I'd see her Baby-Girl again. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Baby-Girl. Even after T returned to D. C.  without her and the weeks stretched into months, deep down I had this feeling that we'd be reunited.

How, home again for the holidays, I was de tem mined to pick up my search. I grabbed Baby-Girl's cat carrier and loaded it into the car, then persuaded Dad to drive me to the shelter, hoping she'd been found.

"Sharon, you have to be realistic," my dad said as we headed to the garage. "She's been gone too long. You're not going to find her."

"Well, I just have a feeling," I said

Dad raised an eyebrow a she climbed into the driver's seat to take me to the shelter.

We were led to the room where the abandoned cats lived.

Shortly after, my shocked Dad drove us back home.

It was nearly midnight by the time 18-year-old Amy Waldroop returned to her grandmother's tiny house, and she was exhausted. After a full day's work at a flower shop, she had put in another six hours waiting tables before heading home. This was her typical weekends.

Pushing the key into the lock, she quietly opened the door so as not to wake her younger siblings. She stepped into the front room, and froze. The house was a mess: plates of half-eaten food were scattered in front of the TV; clothes, shoes and exercise books were everywhere.

Amy's eyes welled with tears. "This is just way too much for me." she thought. Her worst fears began to race through her mind. Two years before, her parents lost their lives in an accident, leaving Amy and her siblings for their grandma—Helen who had spent half of her life in a wheelchair. The life burden fell on Amy's shoulders, which was too much for a girl.

One day, walking across the school grounds, Amy found a table littered with university brochures. She browsed through pictures of spacious campuses and happy kids —all of it looking unachievable for her, given the current situation and financial conditions. But her teacher gave her unexpected hope, saying "You could attend university for free. It would take a scholarship, though, and for that you'd need much better grades."

During her final year of high school, Amy diligently attended classes, then went to work after school, returned to her grandmother's house, cared for her sisters and brothers and went through homework till the early hours of the morning, struggling for her dream university.

One afternoon, she walked home from school, holding a sheet of paper tightly. It was a letter from the University of California, informing her that she would be offered a scholarship and was admitted to the university. It was what she'd longed for, a place where she could study to become someone special —a nurse, perhaps, or maybe even a lawyer.

I was helping my mother in the kitchen when I heard a terrible noise struck from above. I rushed to the upper floor to check out. There was nothing but a wet footprint on the floor.

"What's happening?" my mother asked.

"Nothing, just the sound of lightning." I knew something strange had happened, but I ignored it as my mother was suffering a cardiac (心脏的) disease. "We'd better close the windows. Maybe rain will pour down," I showed a relaxing expression but thought back about that footprint. It was so familiar, but I could not remember where I had seen it.

"David, can you help me take the cooking pot in the attic (阁楼)?" my mother requested. "Oh, please! I am afraid of the dark," I answered.

My mother said that I was like my father. Oh, you want to know what happened to my father? He was an engineer. Last month, he went to the oil platform in the middle of the sea at Jerteh, Terengganu. He said he went there for only 4 days. But 2 weeks had passed, and he still didn't come back. My mother called the management office in Jerteh but was told they hadn't seen him since they last saw him on his way to the seashore from the oil platform.

Speaking of my father, my mother looked sad. "Today was our Anniversary Day, but he was missing."

But back to the main point. I investigated the footprint in my room. And when I looked up, the window was opened. I walked towards it and looked out. Nothing. I closed the window and lay down on my bed. "Ouch! What is this?" I asked myself.

There was a small box on my bed. I wondered what was inside it. I opened the brown box. There was a necklace, made of pure gold. Why was there a gold necklace in my room?

Suddenly, my room became dark. My terrible fear towards the darkness was to the limit. I grabbed a flashlight and turned it on.

I shouted excitedly, and called my mum down.

It was Mr. Morgan's first day as a new history teacher. He was giving the students a lecture on the Great Depression and World War Ⅱ, when the door suddenly opened. A boy walked in with his eyes fixed on the floor and took his seat without speaking a word or looking up at the teacher.

"Good morning, young man," said Mr. Morgan, his voice was strict. "It's 9:15, and you're 20 minutes late for class. Do you have a good reason?" But the boy just sat without responding. "Could you please stand up and introduce yourself?" Mr. Morgan added. "I'm Archie," replied the boy as he rose and looked up, rubbing his tired eyes.

Archie looked very untidy and dizzy（头晕目眩的）, as though he hadn't slept at all the previous nights. "Nice to meet you, Archie. I'm your new history teacher. You're late for class. Do you mind telling me why? You just walked in without excusing yourself, and I won't entertain such behavior." Archie hesitated for a while. "I'm sorry, sir. I overslept. I didn't mean to come in late. I was just tired, sir," he finished, unable to control his yawn, and the whole class laughed. "Silence!" Mr. Morgan demanded. "Archie, you cannot be late for class like this. Can I see your homework? I heard your previous history teacher gave you assignments every weekend. Show it to me, will you?"

Archie handed over his notebook, and Mr. Morgan's expression turned uneasy. "Umm, it looks like that you didn't do your homework at all." "I didn't do it, sir," the boy said sheepishly as the teacher looked through the rest of the pages. "Archie, what is this? You haven't done any of your homework this whole term," Mr. Morgan scolded. "I want to meet your parents tomorrow, alright? Or I'm taking you straight to the principal's office. Is that clear?" "Yes, sir," Archie murmured and sat on his seat.

But the boy didn't show up the following day. The principal told him, "We've given Archie chances, but there's no improvement. His presence is affecting our academic statistics." Mr. Morgan started to worry.

Isla and I were studying in the same school. We had been friends since we were six years old. I took Isla as a smart, funny friend, but not all students at our school did, especially the girl students. Girls in our school wore fashionable branded clothes, but Isla sewed hers and her curly hair and thick glasses made her look like a fish, which made her stand out like a sore thumb (招眼). 

For me, sometimes I felt embarrassed to be around Isla, particularly when students said rude words about her hair, clothes, glasses — even about the fact that she got really good grades. Isla always seemed to be able to ignore what other students thought, but I couldn't. I began to distance myself from her. Our school had a tradition — there was a talent show every spring. Students would sing, dance, play musical instruments, and do whatever they could to show their talents. Being our graduation season in this senior school, this year's talent show would be obviously different. It would be a huge night. 

Ava, who was an outgoing girl, invited me to be on her dance team. "We win the talent show every year, and we expect a satisfactory graduation this year," Ava said to me excitedly. "We need a new dancer. But only you, not her!" Ava pointed to someone behind me. 

I didn't need to turn around to see who she meant. "Oh, I see," I said quietly. Ava had hardly headed out when someone tapped on my shoulder. It was Isla. When I saw her confused face, it was like waking up from a dream. Isla asked me eagerly, "Emily, are you going to take part in the talent show?" I hesitated without response. "That's great, Emily!" Isla told me without waiting for my answer that she was also going to participate this year. I couldn't believe what I had heard. I started to worry about her when I imagined that she was in front of a huge crowd, and that everybody would laugh at her. 

Time passed quickly, and I had barely seen Isla since then. For me, I had to practice hard every day with Ava and the team to keep up since the other dancers had already known the steps.

A Gift Beyond Measure

At an early age, I was crazy about music, dreaming of possessing a piano on which I could practice and play in the way a famous pianist did on the stage. Later when I was getting older, on my way to school, there was an instrument shop that I passed by almost every day. When I saw through the window, in the corner of the shop stood a nice piano which would always attract my eyes so deeply that I even forgot everything around me.

To my sadness, my family was truly struggling. In that period, my mother was laid off from her position and my father was only a clerk in a company. It was just a matter of getting by on a low income, not to mention buying me an expensive piano though they knew I was eager to play that piano so much. The increasing wrinkles in my father's face even stopped me from having this thought.

Then one day after school, I went as usual to the shop window to look at the piano. However, the piano had gone! It was a big surprise. Someone had purchased the piano that I would stare at almost every day! I should not have been surprised as others had the right to buy it, if they could afford to. However, at the thought of not being able to see that piano any more, tears filled my eyes.

Disappointed and helpless, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street. I felt as though something had been stolen in my heart. After what seemed a year, I returned home, dragging my heavy legs. Hardly had I just gone into the house when my mother called my name. Brushing away my tears, I followed the sound of her voice into the dining room.
