Every Sunday, June, a six-year-old girl, tied her sports shoes and walked to Grandpa's house. Grandpa lived around the block(街区), and June was allowed to walk there by herself. Grandpa often told her stories. They also ate ice cream together while they talked. Sunday was June's favorite day.

This Sunday, June got dressed. She put on one sports shoe, but she could not find the other shoe. "Mommy, where's my shoe?"

"I'm sure it's in your room. Look carefully until you find it. You can't go until you have both shoes on," June's mother said.

Then June remembered a story Grandpa told her. When he was little, he lost a coin that he planned to use to buy his mother a candy. He walked back over every place he had been to that day until he found it. He had to go in order so he wouldn't miss anything.

June stood up. "I'll start in the corner and go around the room in order," she thought. "That way I won't miss anything."

One day, David's teachers encouraged him to compete alongside his non-wheelchair schoolmates. Unsure and yet grateful for the opportunity, he thought he should give it a shot. By the time the race was about to begin, the sun had risen. David was glad that he was well prepared. Adjusting the cap on his head and his gloves, David was all ready to protect himself from the heat and the strong strokes to his wheelchair. David's eyes followed the starter who was waving a red flag. As soon as the gun was fired, David was off. The entire stadium erupted into thunderous cheers.

David pushed forward with all his strength, his hands holding the wheels the whole time for the long-distance race. His wheelchair rolled steadily out of the stadium, passing the shop houses. Despite doing everything he could to keep up with the other competitors, David fell behind.

When I was only seven years old, I didn't realize the whole arrangements of our journey as a family to Manchester in 1978. My mother was in great pain and wished to visit specialists in Manchester. My father unwillingly had to sell our property in Australia. The day before we boarded the ship, Father reluctantly said goodbye to his six-year-old cattle dog, Pluto, who was loved by us all. Father's friend Julia was to be his guardian while we were overseas, as he had been getting to know Pluto for many weeks.

We sailed back to Australia two years later and re-established our home. My father immediately began his own search for Pluto. One cold winter's Saturday morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an elderly lady living on her own on the outskirts of the town. As she told my father on the telephone, it was "just glimpses of a dingo-type dog in the shadows" of her disused tennis court. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework. 

We set off in his blue and black Jensen car which he had brought back from England. It was hardly the right vehicle for the rough roads we travelled that day. Five and a half hours later, we found the run-down old property. Sadly, she told my father that the "dingo dog" hadn't been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eye. He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle for Pluto.

No one is born a winner. People make themselves into winners by their own efforts. I learned this lesson from an experience many years ago. I took the head coaching job at a school in Baxley, Georgia. It was a small school with a weak football program. The school took part in the league matches every year. However, it never ended well. We were more of the audience, watching and cheering instead of sweating out in the fields.

Fortunately, the school held the tradition that the school's old team was to play against the new team at the end of spring practice. For lack of resources, the old team had no coach, and they didn't even practice to prepare for the game.

I was assigned (指派) as the coach of the new team, which was why I was excited. I believed that we were going to win, but to my disappointment, we were defeated. I couldn't believe I had got into such a situation. Thinking hard about it, I tried to figure out the reason and what I should do next. 

It didn't take long before I came to realize that my team was depending on me. Without proper guidance or previous experience, my team was at a loss what to do. I had to change my attitude so that I could bring out the best in them about their ability and potential.

I would let my action do the talking. First, I started doing anything I could to help them build a little pride. I could see their spirits lifted, with their head held high in great confidence. Most importantly, I began to treat them like winners. Only when they regarded themselves as winners could they willingly invest time and energy.

This summer, the other teams enjoyed their vacations.

Six months later, football season started.

It's a great pity that I had not put forth the amount of effort required. I had spent too much timed playing with my friends instead of improving myself. I had let down my teacher, who was the kindest, sweetest, and prettiest one I had ever known. She laughed often, and never threatened any of us, yet she was able to "read" the children, control the class, and teach effectively. Miss Pratt put a lot of herself into her work. Every day near the close of school, she would read to us, or even better, tell us stories about when she was a little girl. Most importantly, she made us feel that she cared about us and that we were important. 

Because of a serious car accident when I was three and a half years old, I had a sear (伤疤) below my nose that was the result of a torn upper lip. Everything else had healed up without any after effects physically, but my emotions remained scarred. Meanwhile, having been called "Chief Running Nose" and "Scarface" by many children, my confidence had suffered. Although my parents and relatives referred to me as pretty, I did not see myself that way. 

Focusing on my scar, I could not appreciate any redeeming features (可取之处). At the end of one school day, I remained in my classroom, waiting for the arrival of my mother, who was coming to take me to an appointment close to the school. Miss Pratt sat at her desk with a fellow teacher and chatted. 

I glanced at the clock and realized it was time to get ready to leave. I put on my wool coat and hat. The teachers looked at my clothes and seemed to admire it. I was able to read their lips a little and my ears perked up to hear, "Who is she? She is really cute." My teacher Miss Pratt answered, "I agree. Bernice is quite pretty."

My sales materials arrived within the week. I had expected something small and neat, but the package looked like a dinosaur's shoebox; it was close to three feet long and nearly a foot wide, full of stuff. There was a thick binder(活页夹) containing a complete selection of the cards and some writing paper, which I would be selling for around $3 per box.

Although my parents supported my try to make money by myself, they had little confidence in my success; after all, instead of an outgoing kid, I was somewhat shy. However, I was determined to have a try to challenge myself.

One day, he felt a great need to relax. He turned on the TV. He laughed, and smiled through the first show, making him feel a little better. But it was the second show that really got to him, where the ventriloquist (腹语术者) Arthur worked with his dummy (假人) . This really provided him with an inspiration for how he was going to make his much-feared presentation a success. 

The next day, he organized a meeting of the people that had the skills he needed, and, of course, his boss. When he explained what he wanted to do, he could sense that everyone was with him on this plan. But a lot of work had to be done for the object of the plan to be completed. 

It was the day of the presentation. Tom was somewhat nervous, but nowhere near to the extent that he usually was for just such a situation. And they had to get to their destination early, for what needed to be done had to be completed before the audience knew what was going on.

It was exactly as I had imagined, straight out of a movie. My grandmother smiled fondly and leaned down, giving the ticket to the ride operator, Mr Salas. Letting go, I rushed to the ride, stopping only to pick which horse to sit on. They were all so beautiful, coming in different colors with' different expressions 'on their plastic faces. To me, it felt like the decision of a lifetime. 

"Come on, sweetie! The ride is going to start!" my grandmother called out, laughing at my indecision. Seeing that, Mr Salas also smiled warmly. Finally, I picked the horse with the pink hair and blue saddle. In the following minutes, I was absorbed in enjoying the ride, forgetting my family was struggling. My grandmother waved each time the ride passed her by. Mr Salas watched me from a distance. 

Sadly, the carousel ride ended much too quickly. My grandmother was waiting and took my hand. I got down from the horse unwillingly, feeling bittersweet.

Taimur and Daniyal were twins and had been my next door neighbors since I was five years old. Not only did we go to the same school, but our evenings and weekends were spent together too. It was like we were inseparable. I never felt that I needed any friends other than them. Unexpectedly, one evening their parents shared the news of them moving to another country—Australia.

For a few days, I even felt less confident while rehearsing (排练) for my performance at the upcoming school's annual event. But what I learned at this point in life was that your family can be the strongest support when you don't even realize it. Turn to your family for support if necessary. Reach out to people who care about you. Find meaningful connections and share how you feel.

Then my mom's usual words rang in my ear,"It is more blessed to give than to receive,"and my family started to think about how we could help.
