One morning, Father was helping Danny pack his bag for a holiday camp. "Do I really have to go, Father?" Danny asked hesitantly. "Son, sometimes the best lessons in life are learnt at camps," Father encouraged. "But I never have the right words to say when talking to someone new," Danny complained. "Alright, let's make a deal. If you learn something good at this camp, this shall be the last holiday camp I sign you up for," Father responded with a proposal. "Deal," Danny replied.

Right after dinner on the first day at camp, everyone was busy packing their bags in preparation for the night walk, Danny headed to the canteen to get a bottle of iced tea. Just as Danny was about to secure the bottle cap, he was caught off-guard as someone suddenly brushed past him and hit his arm. The bottle slipped out of his hands and fell to the floor. Light brown liquid flowed out, creating ugly mess on the floor. Danny caught a flash of a boy in a green T-shirt running off into the distance. "How rudely," Danny shouted, gritting his teeth "Not even an apology!"

Just then, Mr Halim, the camp guide, approached Danny. "What are you doing here inste-"he asked but stopped midway when he saw the mess on the floor. "It wasn't me!" Danny raised his voice in his defence. "You'll fix this mess you created before we head out for the night walk,"Mr Halim remarked, walking off in a hurry before Danny could explain himself.

"How unfortunate," Danny thought to himself, "It wasn't even my fault to begin with. Getting down on his knees, he started wiping up the mess. Twenty minutes passed and the floor was dry. Danny managed to calm himself down and think clearly. He recalled how Father had given him a second chance when he broke his vase by mistake a week ago. Realizing that what had happened just now might have been an accident, Danny resolved to let the past rest.

It turned out that playing football was a lot harder than it looked. Every time Mike was about to kick the ball, someone else kicked it away from him. When Mike threw the ball in from the sideline, he forgot to keep both feet on the ground. The only thing that Mike was good at was cheering. Whoever scored, he would jump up and cheer for them.

On the weekend, Mike's team was invited to take part in its first real competition with the Sun. Mike's family all came to watch. Mike chased the ball up and down, with excitement. It came as no surprise that their team lost the match. Even so, he kept cheering for anyone who scored.

After the game, his sister came over and reminded Mike that he needed to be a real football player, not just a cheerleader. Meanwhile, his coach told Mike that if he tried to do more practice and cooperate with his teammates, he could be a better football player, too.

Just when I decided to scold（训斥）my little brother, Dad came home from work, and I told him what had happened.

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She ran a small shop at a flea market and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed.

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. After the reunion, I went down to my old house, just out of curiosity. There I found my mom fallen on the cold ground. I did not shed a single tear.

I think my life has been long enough now, and I won't visit Seoul anymore.

Mom pulled into our driveway, and turned toward me, "Well, I know a little about Jenny. She and her little brother have been together in foster care (寄养家庭). So close were they that every time they moved, Jenny would say that as long as they were together, they had a family." My heart sank as Mom continued, "Jenny's stepfather (继父) came for her brother this week, with gifts, hugs and big plans for their future. But Jenny wasn't even part of his big plans." My chest felt tight. "Poor Jenny, not to have a family." I was close to tears. My mother patted my knee. "That's it, honey. You got it." And I did.

I decided that I should do something. I proposed that we organize a team gathering before the tournament. Each member was to write a heartfelt message for every teammate and prepare a special gift for the one they felt most connected to. I made sure that Jenny would come. It took some persuading, though.

As the days went by, I still found it hard to fit in. I was shy and found it difficult to strike up conversations with my classmates. Some of the kids in my class noticed my discomfort and tried to be friendly, but I couldn't shake off the feeling of being an outsider. I only had words with my desk mate, Alex, when necessary. Things took a turn for the worse when I knocked off Alex's water bottle by accident, although I picked up the bottle immediately and apologized to him. He got mad at me and seemed not to forgive me. Soon I found we were avoiding each other.

Steve was immediately attracted by Miss White at the first sight! Yet still he failed. He never did his homework, and he was always in trouble with Miss White. In the middle of the first semester, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods, where he often escaped alone, trying to shut out the sights, sounds and smells of his alcoholic home. No one checked on him to see if he was safe. No one knew he was gone, because no one cared about him. Oddly, Steve never missed a day of school. 

One day, Miss White's impatient voice broke into his daydreams. "Steve!" Alarmed, he turned to look at her. "Pay attention!"

"You all did pretty well," she told the class, "except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but…" She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp stare, her eyes searching his face. "…. The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!"

She just stared at Steve, as the class spun around for a good look. Steve dropped his eyes and carefully examined his fingertips. 

After that, Steve still wouldn't do his homework. Even as the punishments became more severe, he remained stubborn. 

"Just try it! ONE WEEK!" He was unmoved. 

"Give yourself a chance! Don't give up on your life!" Nothing swayed him. "Steve! Please! I care about you!"

Wow! Suddenly, Steve got if!!! Someone cared about him? Someone, CARED ABOUT HIM!

Steve went home from school, thoughtful, that afternoon. 

The following Monday, Miss White gave a quiz on the weekend homework as usual. 

We met Max at the pickup area of Alaska Airlines. A standard poodle（鬈毛狗）born on Valentine's Day in 2002, he came to us in a small blue box. We had adopted him from a friend, who raised many dogs.

When we opened the box, we saw him. With his curly black hair and intelligent eyes, Max was beautiful. He was so small that he fit into the palm（手掌）of my hand, his big paws（爪子）lapping over the sides. He was also scared. As I pulled him close, I felt his heart pound and wondered if we'd done the right thing, taking him from his mother. But it was too late. Sophie and Jake were already fighting over who would hold him next.

Over the following months, we spent endless hours watching Max play with his toy or run around the living room. Like most poodles, he was smart. He mastered house-training quickly and never chewed on our furniture or shoes. He considered himself one of us.

Some days after school, I'd find Jake curled up with Max inside his box. When I suggested that my son get out of the dog box, Jake yelled, "Max wants me in here! We're brothers!"

By his first birthday, Max had grown into a 50-pound guard dog. He manned the front door like a soldier, barking fiercely at other dogs walking by. I felt safe with him there, especially when my husband was away. Sometimes, when I was missing my husband a lot, I held Max close.

Many years later, my husband passed away. My kids grew up and went to university. They worked in other cities after graduation.

After that argument, Alice, feeling increasingly frustrated, withdrew into herself and spent more time in her room. She started to avoid her parents as much as possible and didn't want to talk to them about anything related to her studies or her future.

Her parents saw that the little girl who had come back laughing and talking was gone, and now they saw a face that was alternately angry and sad. She did spend less time on her phone, but she became increasingly unhappy.
