For you who dream of studying abroad, you're probably thinking it'll be an easy transition. From my personal experience, I can tell you that it is much fun, but certainly not easy. In fact, there are many challenges of studying abroad.

You may feel like an outsider. Regardless of what country you're going to, you may find yourself wondering why everyone's laughing when you don't realize someone has told a joke.

Actually everyone I've ever met while studying abroad has been very friendly. Though I may never become truly "one of them", finally this problem becomes smaller and smaller.

You have to overcome the language barrier. Even if you're studying in a country where you speak the same language, there're still strong local accents and slang phrases (俚语) to clear.

However, the language barrier problem also goes away pretty quickly.

When something seems to go against you in a foreign country, you can really feel on your own. Your family and friends will be hundreds or even thousands of miles away. This challenge is likely to be felt most especially true in the first few months. But then, you'll make new friends and after a year or so, everything will be OK!

There're cultural misunderstandings for you to deal with. As a foreigner, you don't know the local culture. Don't worry; you can avoid cultural misunderstandings by observing what others do and how they do it. If there's any doubt, just ask! You'll find most people are happy to talk about their customs.

    A. Don't let this discourage you.

    B. You're far from your support network.

    C. You'll make mistakes, and many may be embarrassing.

    D. Living abroad is wonderful when everything is going well.

    E. So the words students use are going to be difficult to learn.

    F. You should know that you can work out the problem by yourself.

    G. Here are some of them that you need to overcome for your further study.

Much meaning can be conveyed clearly in our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.

On a bus you may look at a stranger, but not for too long. And if he senses that you are staring at him, he may feel uncomfortable.

The same is true in our daily life. If you are stared at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you. Eyes do speak, right?

Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. If a man stares at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to look away from her, his intentions are obvious. He wishes to attract her attention, and let her know that he is admiring her.

However, when two persons are engaged in a conversation, the speaker will only look into the listener's eyes from time to time to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking. If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking as if he's trying to control you, you will feel awkward. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim. He wrongly believes that looking straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication.

Actually, eye contact should be made based on a specific relationship and situation.

    A. On the contrary, it will give him away.

    B. Do you have such a kind of experience?

    C. That's what normal eye contact is all about.

    D. Actually, continuous eye contact is limited to lovers only.

    E. After all, everybody likes to be stared at for quite a long time.

    F. But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex.

    G. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel annoyed at being stared at that way

  • 1. Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

    A. Does this mean that success does not really exist?

    B. But should we believe that success is an illusion?

    C. And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed.

    D. The true myth is that the actions of men and women are useless.

    E. The stress of creation would be at an end.

    F. The reality is that despite men's efforts, women are playing an important role.

It is not difficult to imagine a world short of ambition. It would probably be a kinder world; without demands, without conflicts, without disappointments. People would have time for reflection. Such work as they did would not be for themselves but for the collectivity. Competition would never enter in. Conflict would be eliminated; tension become a thing of the past. Art would no longer be troubling, but purely celebratory in its functions. Longevity would be increased, for fewer people would die of heart attack or stroke caused by intensive endeavour. Anxiety would be extinct. Time would stretch on and on, with ambition long departed from the human heart.

Ah, how unrelieved boring life would be!

There is a strong view that holds that success is a myth, and ambition therefore a fake. That achievement is at bottom empty? That the efforts of men and women are of no significance alongside the force of movements and events. Now not all success, obviously, is worth esteeming, nor all ambition worth cultivating. Which are and which are not is something one soon enough learns on one's own. But even the most cynical(愤世嫉俗)secretly admit that success exists; that achievement counts for a great deal. To believe otherwise is to take on a point of view that is likely to be disturbing. It is, in its implications, to remove all motives for competence, interest in attainment, and regard for off spring.

We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents. We do not choose our historical era, the country of our birth, or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing. We do not, most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the time or conditions of our death. But within all this realm of choicelessness, we do choose how we shall live: courageously or in cowardice, honourably, with purpose or in drift. We decide what is important and what is trivial in life. We decide that what makes us significant is either what we do or what we refuse to do. But no matter how indifferent the universe may be to our choices and decisions, these choices and decisions are ours to make. We decide. We choose. In the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about.

If you're one of the millions of Americans who take a blood pressure medication as part of their morning routine, you may want to rethink that. A new study has shown that taking your medication at night instead might save your life.

The study was simple yet thorough: 19, 084 Caucasian adults who had been prescribed one or more of five common blood pressure medications were randomly assigned to take them either immediately upon awakening or right before turning off the lights to go to bed. After more than six years, those who took their medicine at night had reduced their risk of dying from heart problems by 66 percent more than the morning pill poppers did. Plus, their risk of stroke reduced by 49 percent more; of heart attack, by 44 percent more; and of heart failure, by 42 percent more.

It's not entirely clear why taking the medications at night affects the results so dramatically, though the researchers had previously reported that" average systolic blood pressure (收缩压) when a person is asleep is the most significant and independent indication of cardiovascular disease risk, regardless of blood pressure measurements taken while awake or when visiting a doctor".

While more research is needed to confirm whether the effects hold true with other ethnic groups, there's little downside-and a potentially huge upside-to taking medications at bedtime.

    1. (1) When do average Americans take blood pressure medications?
    2. (2) How does taking blood pressure medications at night benefit people?
    3. (3) What is still unclear about the 6-year study?
    4. (4) What does the author mean by saying "there's little downside -and potentially huge upside- to taking medications at bedtime"?
    5. (5) Write a summary of the passage.

Do mosquitoes carry the coronavirus? And if so, can they transmit it to humans and infect a person? Short answer: it's unlikely. Official guidance from the World Health Organization says there's no evidence to suggest that the new coronavirus could be transmitted through mosquito bites.

For starters, the coronavirus is a respiratory (呼吸性的) virus, and the main method of transmission are viral droplets released into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It is quite unlikely that a virus may be present in the blood that a mosquito feeds on.

Plus, for a virus to pass to a person through a mosquito or other kind of insect bite, the virus must be able to reproduce inside the mosquito. Neither the new coronavirus nor any other type of coronavirus has been shown to do that. The mosquito would have to pick up the necessary amount of virus during its bite. The virus must then not only survive the digestive process but make its way to the salivary glands (唾液腺) and be regarded by the mosquito as part of its salivary secretions.

Relatively few human viruses have the ability to infect both humans and mosquitoes because mosquitoes are very genetically different from humans. The vast majority of human viruses have been infecting humans for a very long time, and even though many of these end up in our blood, they are still unable to infect mosquitoes. Conversely, there are many mosquito viruses that are unable to infect humans, or any mammals.

It's pretty clear that you should not be worrying about if a mosquito has been feasting on your leg. Keep swatting them away, though. Many people may forget that disease threats may already be buzzing right outside their window.

    Answer the following questions.

    1. (1) What is the main method of transmission of the coronavirus?
    2. (2) Can the virus reproduce in the mosquito?
    3. (3) Why can't most of the human viruses infect mosquitoes?
    4. (4) Write a summary based on the answers above.

    Simple Ways to Build Trust

The most valuable thing you can have is trust. When there is no trust, it becomes hard to get anything done. Then think of another one with very little trust.

Which one do you prefer? We can all be better off with more trust in our lives. And I'm going to show you a few things you can do to build trust.

Be honest. Honesty is the basis of any relationship. Be true to your word and keep your promises. Share honest information, even if it's to your disadvantage.

Ask open-ended questions. Open-ended questions give your friends chances to tell you about themselves. Ask more questions based on the answers that you get.

Don't be perfect. There is always something fishy (可疑的)about someone who seems to have everything going for them. This sends a message that you're not hiding anything and that you want to build trust.

Say what you mean. When you build up a reputation of saying what you mean, people don't have to second-guess what you're trying to say. This helps you win trust.

Don't blame others. Be brave to take responsibility and then decide what you're going to do next. Don't waste the present thinking about the past which can't be changed. A person that doesn't blame gets the trust of others quickly.

    A. If you think it's a bad idea, say so.

    B. When things go wrong, don't point the finger at them.

    C. Value long-term relationships more than short-term success.

    D. Don't waste your energy hiding your mistakes or weaknesses.

    E. Think of one of your relationships where there is a lot of trust.

    F. Learn more about your friends and be interested in their answers.

    G. Trust may be the most important part in successful relationships.
