Hobbies are also a way of making friends. Starting anew school term is always exciting. It is a chance to see your friends again. But most exciting of all, the new term is a chance to take up new hobbies. It is common in Britain for students to take up new hobbies after the Christmas holidays.
Most schools offer different kinds of hobby classes. Students take them in their free periods(时期)or afterschool. You have to pay for some classes and others are free. For example, l once took a free Wednesday evening gymnastics(体操) class my school offered. But when 1learnt how to play the drums, my parents had to pay for the lessons.
The most popular extra(额外的) classes at my school were piano lessons and drama club. Both classes offered exams for students. Students with many hobbies sometimes felt more stressed (有压力的) than those without any. But the students with hobbies left school with many extra skills.
I haven't continued any of the hobbies I began at school. But I have never regretted(后悔)taking them. I met my best friend in my gymnastics class.

Wang Kun was an office worker in Beijing in the past, but now he works with 300, 000 trees in Tianjin.
The idea of planting trees came into Wang's mind six years ago when he saw only yellow trees in autumn. Then he decided to plant maples (枫树). He wanted to make the autumn more colourful with red colour.
However, it was not an easy job. Wang didn't know how to plant trees at all. He learned from books first. When he felt he was ready to start, he bought thousands of small maple trees and tried to take good care of them. However, all of them died. Wang lost lots of money because of this. But he didn't lose heart. Then he turned to experts (专家)for help and did many tests. After trying hundreds of times, Wang found half of the trees survived(存活). Finally that number grew to 90 percent. He succeeded.
Wang Kun thinks planting trees can help improve the environment. It can make the city more beautiful. He enjoys doing such a job.

Everyone has different (业余爱好), such as playing football, playing (排球), travelling, fishing or swimming. For me, playing football is my (最喜爱的) sport because it is part of my life. Playing football not only makes me (强壮的) and healthy, but also gives me a (机会)to spend time with friends. Above all, playing football can (带来)me a lot of fun and (成功). These days I am (准备) for a game. I want to (赢)the game. It will be held next Sunday. I think it will be an unforgettable (经历)for me.
Not long ago, l asked many middle-aged persons a question. I asked, "How many of you had a hobby when you were children?" Nearly everyone raised a hand. I then asked them to keep their hands in the air if they knew at least one of their children's hobbies. Most of the hands went down. I felt sad. It's terrible if the children don't have a hobby. How I wish all the parents can care about their children's hobbies!
Thirty years ago, almost every child in my neighborhood had some kinds of hobbies. Collecting and trading baseball cards was a popular hobby. Others, like coin collecting and stamp collecting, were also popular. One of my friends was collecting photos; another was collecting radios. In fact, hobbies can benefit (有益于)children in several ways. They are expressions of personal success and self-discovery (自我发现). Hobbies also help build self-respect(自尊). Hobbies are educational tools, as well. For example, a child interested in rocketry (火箭技术)-—one of the most popular hobbies, can explore (探索)those skills in many ways. By working on hobbies, children learn to set goals, make decisions, and solve all sorts of problems.
