    How toPersuade People

Convincing people that your way is the best way is often very difficult—especially whenyou're not quite sure why they're saying no.Turn the tables on yourconversation and convince people of your point of view. And with the right methods, you can do it.

1 Knowing how to persuade people isn't just inwords and body language—it's also in knowing the right time to talk to them.Ifyou approach people when they are more relaxed and open to discussion, you will most likely achieve faster, better results.

2Talkfast.People are more persuaded by a fast, confidenttalker than accuracy.Sort of makes sensethe faster you talk, the less time your listener has to process what you've saidand question it.

3Getto know them.A large part of whether or not persuasion is effective is based onthe general understanding between you and your son/friend/employee.If you don'tknow the person well,it's necessary tostart building this understanding immediately—find common ground as soon aspossible. So find parallels and make them known.

4 There is something to be said for clarity.Ifyou're confusing the person may want to agree with you,but doesn't necessarily know  what you're lookingfor.Speaking in a firm way will help you maintain directness and keep yourintentions clear.

    a.Speak firmly.

    b.Understand the best time.

    c.Talk about what interests them.

d.The trick is to get them wondering why they're saying no.

e.Thus, youcreate the feeling that you truly grasp the subject.

f.If someone talks fast,it'sthe perfect time to persuade him.

g.Humans, ingeneral, feel safer aroundpeople that are similar to them.

Some colors people see late at night could cause signs of the condition mental health experts call clinical depression(临床抑郁症). That was the finding of a study that builds on earlier study findings. They show that individuals who live or work in low levels of light overnight can develop clinical depression.

Doctors use the word clinical depression to describe severe form of depression. Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide.

In the new study, American investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters(仓鼠)to different colors. The researchers chose hamsters because they are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and are active at night. The animals were separated into four groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their nighttime period. Another group was placed in front of a blue light, a third group slept in front of a white light, while a fourth was put in front of a red light. After four weeks, the researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the most depressed animals drank the least amount of water.

Randy Nelson, at Ohio State University, says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed. “What we saw is that these animals didn't show any sleep interruptions at all but they did mess up biological clock (生物钟) genes and they did show depressive sign but if they were in the dim red light, they did not.” He says there's a lot of blue in white light. This explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness.

    1. (1) From the text we know that ________ made the hamster feel depressed.

    2. (2) What was the purpose of the experiment on hamsters?

    3. (3) The author explains the clinical depression by ________.

    4. (4) Where can we probably find the text?

Thanks to a young waiter, I recently found a friend of 20 years was once a yoyo virtuoso(大师).

“Oh, stop it!” Jackie said when I started laughing during our dinner. “I was, too. And I knew how to ‘Walk the Dog.'”

“Wow, really?” said our waiter, Jumario Simmons, flashing a big smile at us.

      “Don't encourage her,” I said.

“What else could you do?” he asked.

“I did ‘Round the World,'” Jackie said, now ignoring me completely. “That was cradle(婴儿时期的)thing, too.”

I'd asked Jumario what he did when he wasn't waiting on tables. The 24yearold waiter was so smart that I knew there had to be more to his story. It turns out that he won a regional yoyo competition last year. He also gives free lessons to kids. “It gives them something to do,” Jumario said. “Keeps them off the streets.”

One of the great things about eating out is the table talk with strangers, which reminds us that everyone has a life and a name. But the other day I heard that some restaurants are ending this talk between diners and servers. I listened to the reporter describe how their improvements are allowing customers to text orders from their tables to speed up service.

The reporter got my attention with this sentence “Five minutes after typing ‘I'm at table 3', a meal arrives at the table.” But there wasn't a “please” with this order, which should have been a request. If you've ever waited on tables, you know that the last thing you need is yet another way for a customer to be unpleasant.

Most servers are often mediating(调解)between customers' requests for substitutions and overworked cooks' accusations of treason(背叛). Except at highend restaurants, servers also have to walk back and forth like mothers of preschoolers so that we might consider them worthy of a large enough tip to lift their pay to minimum wage.

Texting a server from a table a few feet away is equal to moving our fingers and shouting, “Hey, you!” It was rude in 1957, and it's rude now. You won't ever find me texting a waiter or waitress.

    1. (1) What do we know from the text?

    2. (2) Some restaurants allow diners to text a server from a table to ________.

    3. (3) What's the last but one paragraph mainly about?

    4. (4) From the passage, the author's attitude towards texting a server from a table is ________.

New Yorkers are gradually getting used to more bicyclers on those hot blue City Bikes. But what about local bike shops? Is City Bike rolling up riders at their expense? At Gotham Bikes in Tribeca, manager W.Ben said the shop has seen an increase in its overall sales due to the bikeshare program.“It's getting more people on the road,”he said.James Ryan,an employee at Danny's Cycles, said City Bike is a good option for people to ease in a city famous for its traffic jams.“They can try out a bike without buying one.”he said.

Rentals are not a big part of the business at either Gotham Bikes or Danny's Cycles. But for Frank's Bike Shop,a small business  on   Christopher St.,the bikeshare program has been bad news.Owner Frank Arroyo said his rental business has decreased by 90% since City Bike was rolled out last month.Arroyo's main rental customers are European tourists, who have since been drawn away by City Bikes.

However,Ben said the bikeshare is good for bike sales at his shop.“People have used the bikeshare and realized how great it is to bike in the city, then decide that they want something Dicer for themselves,”he noted.Andrew Crooks, owner of NYC Velo,at 64 Second Ave.,said at first he was concerned about bikeshare, though,he admitted,“I was happy to see people on bikes. It seemed like a great idea, but one that would be difficult to implement(实施).”Crooks said he worried about inexperienced riders' lack of awareness of biking rules and strong negative reaction from noncyclists. However,he said.it's still too early to tell if his business has been impacted. While it's possible that bikeshare will cause a drop in business,Crooks thought that the idea was a positive step forward for New York City.

    1. (1) What happened to Gotham Bikes as a result of the bikeshare program?

    2. (2) What is the author's chief concern about the increasing use of City Bikes?

I met Mrs. Neidl in the ninth grade on a stage-design team for a play and she was one of the directors. Almost instantly I loved her. She had an unpleasant voice and a direct way of speaking,1she was encouraging and inspiring. For some reason, she was impressed with my work and me.
