① Most people have dogs as pets. They are "man's best friends". But do you know that dogs can also do different jobs?

② On September 11, 2001, terrorists(恐怖分子)attacked (袭击)the US and nearly 3, 000 people died. At that time over 300 dogs were there to help to find and save people. Dogs can help us work better in many ways as working dogs. 

③ The most common jobs for working dogs are in search and rescue.  They can find lost people or bodies after a big disaster(灾难)or in the wild. 

④ Guide dogs can help blind people walk safely. To help blind people, dogs need to be trained in training schools for a long time and learn many skills, such as finding and following a clearway and moving around obstacles (障碍物) . They will stop when the traffic light is red and keep walking when it turns green. 

⑤ There are also dogs working with doctors. They can help autistic (自闭症的) children. These children sometimes don't talk and like to do the same things again and again. A study from Canada showed that dogs could make these children feel relaxed and safe.

Can one paper bag change the world? Sarah Murphy believes it can and she tries to do something about it. 

The seventh grader from the United States, decorates(装饰) lunch bags for the homeless. 

She wants to bring hope to those people. She fills each bag with a lunch and gives them away to homeless people in the town, through a charity program. 

Sarah Murphy has a great interest in charity. She used to donate money to charities at her school. Then she heard about the charity program from her friends. So she wanted to do something special, too. 

To attract the help of more children, she reached out to a local library and made a program. They set up a coloring station in the library. Children may take a bag, draw and write a message of hope. They can leave it on the front desk. They can also take it home and return it after coloring. 

In the past three months, Sarah Murphy has bought 100 brown lunch bags and put them in the library. Children at the library have colored them. She will happily buy more. She once joined a summer reading program with the theme "Build A Better World". Sarah Murphy believes what she does could make a difference. She also believes that love and kindness would make the world a better place.

March 17 was a special day for almost everyone in the UK. At school, kids got to wear their own clothes instead of uniforms. In offices, people did lots of silly things, like crazy dances. In the streets, some people dressed up to sell cakes. And, the strangest of all, everyone was wearing a red nose. 

This day is called Red Nose Day. It is a huge charity event in the UK. On this day, many people, from the famous to ordinary(普通的)people, wear a red plastic(塑料的)nose and do something funny to raise money.  All the money they raise goes to help the poorest people in the UK and Africa. 

Why Africa? The story goes back to 1985. There was a big TV show on the BBC with many comedians(喜剧演员)on it. It hoped to make people laugh so that they would donate money. With the money, they would help people in Africa.

They chose red noses because they made people stand out from the crowd. They looked so strange that they got people interested in the charity. 

The first Red Nose Day happened in 1988. Since then, Red Nose Day has raised over E1 billion(about 8.98 billion yuan)and helped change more than 11.7 million lives in the UK and Africa. Today, it is one of the biggest charity events on the UK calendar. 

Helping others in need is not only about giving money. There are many other interesting ways to help, such as charity shops and charity concerts. A common person can also make a big difference.

The mountains where I live are full of curvy(弯曲的) and dangerous roads. I was driving down one of those roads last spring. Days of rain made the ground slippery to drive on. 

As I turned around a curve, I saw a fallen tree across the road. It blocked my way. I hit the brakes(刹车) and slowly drove around it. Then I stopped. I knew it was only a matter of time before someone driving faster than I was would run into that tree. 

I got out of my car and tried to pull the tree into the ditch(沟), but it was too big and heavy to move. I didn't know what to do. But 30 seconds later, a white truck appeared and pulled over. 

Out stepped a young man. "You need a chainsaw(电锯)? "he asked. I said, "Yes! " He pulled one out of his truck. For the next few minutes, he cut the tree into several parts and I carried them across the road and dropped them on the other side.

"You never know when you will need a chainsaw, " I joked. Then I waved goodbye and watched him drive off.

In this life, you never know when you will need a chainsaw. You do know, however, when you will need a kind and loving heart. 

Have you ever done any volunteering work? Let me tell you something about my experiences about volunteering. 

I worked  a volunteer at a Children's Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. There were many poor children suffering a lot from illness. My role was to help make  (they)feel happy while they were staying in the hospital. 

 (sound)interesting, right?  some people can't understand my actions. They may think what I did has nothing good to do with my own life. 

Let me tell you  I did it. The main reason was to help create  better future for people. In this big world, so many people need help. 

Look at the children in the hospital where I worked. They were scared and lonely facing all the  (difficulty)since their parents also had other kids to care for. So, why not try to help as many people as possible? That was my thought. 

Helping people in Africa let me see other parts of this planet more  (clear). And volunteering at the hospital showed me a side of the world I didn't know about before. I met people from all over the world. We got to share so much with each other. 

I  (feel) really close to these people. We shared  (amaze)memories and grew together. I wanted to go back to my country with new experiences and ideas so that, together, we can help more people and make the world a better place for everyone! 

It is hard to find voluntary work that fits you. Here is some advice for you!

These shelters(庇护所)in Chinese cities offer meals, beds and other services. You might help prepare or hand out meals. You could learn more about the problems of the homeless and the ways that you can help out.

Thousands of young people join the volunteer teaching program every year in western China. Prepare for teaching skills by yourself. Once you enter a university, you can contact(联系)their office.

Environmental groups such as Greenpeace encourage volunteers to help protect(保护)the planet. You can help by living in a green way, walking to work, or by lending a hand in the office. Why not contact an office near you?

With more and more foreigners learning Chinese, the Ministry of Education has launched(开办)the "Chinese Volunteer Program for Teaching Chinese". Volunteers are sent to teach Chinese both in and outside China.

If you are interested, prepare yourself with the right skills now.
