Many scientists believe our love of sugar may be an addiction(瘾). When we eat or drink sugary food, the sugar enters our blood and influences parts of our brain that make us feel good. Then the good feeling goes away, leaving us wanting more. All delicious food does this, but sugar has a specially strong effect.

"It seems like every time I study an illness and trace a path to the first cause, I find my way back to sugar," says scientist Richard Johnson. One- third of adults in the world have high blood pressure and up to 347 million have too much sugar in their blood. Why? "Sugar, we believe, is one of the culprits, if not the main culprit," says Johnson.

Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to be very efficient in storing sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy stored for when there was no food. But today, most people have more than enough. So the very thing that once saved us may now be killing us.

So what is the solution? It's easy to see that we need to eat less sugar. The trouble is, in today's world, it's very difficult to avoid. More and more foods are filled with it. Some producers even use sugar to replace taste in foods that are advertised as low in fat.

But there are those who are fighting back against sugar. Many schools are replacing sugary desserts with healthier food like fruit. Other schools are growing their own food in gardens, or building places for students and others in the community to exercise. The battle has not yet been lost.

I walked into a restaurant and ordered some food. After about 20 minutes, a large group of people came in and placed their own orders.

To my disappointment, the group got served before me. I watched as they began to eat and laugh loudly. I heard one of them bragging (吹嘘) about how he's connected to someone who works at the restaurant. Unable to stand it anymore, I decided to leave. I angrily asked the waiter to cancel my order.

He calmly told me, "Yours is a special order being prepared by the head chef himself. It'll take a little more time. Please have a drink while you wait."

I calmed down and waited patiently. Shortly after, my meal was served by six waiters.

To my surprise, the owner of the restaurant turned out to be a long- lost friend of mine. He saw me walking in and decided to surprise me. He turned my simple meal into a five-star meal for free. The people at the other table were shocked and couldn't stop looking at me. They started complaining, asking why they didn't get that kind of service.

Such is l life! Some people are ahead of you, laughing at you and talking about how they are smarter, wiser and better than you, and how they are well- connected and lucky, while you are working hard day and night, wondering why it's taking so long for you to be rewarded like them.

You just have to wait longer because your reward is more special.

Nearly reaching them, I noticed him still standing near the10  reached my daughters and passed the11 at the entrance door which he kept holding open. I looked back and saw12 going up the stairs, two at a time. I told my daughters about it and all three of us felt13 that we didn't even thank the polite gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to pass through before going up.

We enjoyed him for14  waiting for us to come down before going up himself and also holding the door open for us to go out. Such well- mannered people are 15 to find these days. Till today, I remember this gentleman and hope to have more people like him.

And I'm not going to lie to myself by saying

There is beauty inside of me that matters

So rest assured I will remind myself

That I am a worthless, ▲ person

And nothing you say will make me believe

I still deserve love

Because no matter what

I am not good enough to be loved

And I am in no position to believe that

Beauty does exist within me

Because whenever I look in the mirror I always think

17-year-old Ashley in Florida has always dreamed of attending an Ivy League school(常春藤盟校). So in late fall last year, she applied(申请) to all the eight famous schools. On Ivy Day, she got accepted to all: Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Yale.

"I just decided to shoot my shot at all of them and see if it would land. I didn't think I'd get accepted into all. That day, I cried a lot and was just extremely surprised.'

Since 2018, each Ivy League school has accepted less than 12% of its applicants. This year Yale accepted 4.5%, Columbia took 3.7%, and Harvard accepted just 3.2%, the lowest number in the university's history.

Ashley says it was hard for her to choose between Harvard and Yale, but it all came down to her career dream——to learn how government works and how policies(政策) can help fix economic differences in communities.

At high school, the teenager was on the debate team and served as a student council president(学生会主席). It helped Ashley build self-confidence.

"I love to learn new things, and debate gave me that opportunity. But more than anything, it just gave me the platform to talk about what I believed in and what was important to me. So that is something that I'll forever thank Carol City for introducing me to that platform."

Ashley continued with debate in high school, and plans to join the debate team at Harvard. She hopes to go to law school after she completes her undergraduate studies. But what she'll do with her law degree remains up in the air, she says.

"I really feel like policy and using policy to empower communities. And so in the short term, for me, that looks like becoming a lawyer," she says."But in the long term, I want to use that as a platform to do work in policy."

Many of the animals live freely at the zoo. Some of the gentler ones, like goats, and sheep, walk among the visitors. Others are kept in large closed- in areas almost like their natural homes. All the animals at the zoo get lots of care and love.
