Recent research shows that physical activity may help students do better in their classes.
The research comes because educators in some countries are reducing time for activities like the PE class.
Researchers go over the results of fourteen studies. Twelve were from the United States, one from Canada and one from South Africa. The studies appeared between 2009 and 2013. They included more than 55, 000 children, aged six to eighteen.
Thomas Singh, one of the researchers, says the studies showed a relationship between physical activity and scores on subjects such as maths, English and reading. Ms Singh offers some possible explanations (解释):
"First, there are physiological (生理学的) explanations, like more blood flow, and so more oxygen to the brain. Being physically active means there are more hormones produced like endorphins (内啡肽), and endorphins make your stress level lower and your mood improved, which means you will perform better in class. Also, students who take part in organised sports learn rules about organising and how to follow them. This can improve their classroom behaviour and help them know what they should do."
All in all, the findings tell us that physically active kids are more likely to do better in schools. Ms Singh says schools should consider the findings before they cut physical education programmes.
Hello, everyone! May I have your attention, please?
Our school will hold a sports meeting next month. There are many kinds of matches to choose from, such as the (高的) jump, the basketball game and the 100 metres hurdles (比赛). All of them will be (公平的) to every sportsperson.
There will be some (座位) for your parents, so you can invite them to enjoy the sports meeting with us.
Try your best to get good results. But if you don't win (第一的) place or (打破) the record, it doesn't matter. The experience will still be a wonderful (记忆) of your school life. As long as you do your best, we'll take (自豪感)in you. Your PE teacher will help you find some good training (方法).
Make your final (决定) by this Friday. I hope all of you can take an active part in this sports meeting! That's all. Thank you!
Jennifer was born in Romania without legs. She was given up at birth by her natural parents. Later, Jennifer was taken to a loving American family, the Brickers, and raised in the small town of Hardinville, Illinois.
Although she was born without legs, her family never let this keep her from realising her dreams. Her parents made one simple rule for her-"Never say' I can't'". They helped her live an encouraging life. The Brickers raised her just like they raised their other three sons. She was taught to never consider her disability as a disadvantage. So, she grew up playing many sports, including volleyball, softball and basketball.
But her true interest was gymnastics (体操). She liked Olympic gold medalist Dominque Moceanu most. She watched her on TV while practising tumbling (翻筋斗).
As she grew older, Jennifer began competing against other athletes in gymnastics competitions around Illinois. Not only did she compete, but she even went on to win a gold medal in power tumbling. And she took part in the Junior Olympics. Jennifer and her family always believed she could do whatever she wanted. Her right attitude (态度),hard work and strong will made this a reality (现实).
If her story was not amazing enough already, when Jennifer was 16, she discovered the most unbelievable news of her life. She learned that her favourite gymnast, Domingue Moceanu, was actually her biological sister! Now, Jennifer tours the country and gives encouraging speeches.

Dear Grace,
How's it going? Sorry I haven't emailed you for a while, but I had so much to do!
I had told you my decision to take up a sport. I knew I wasn't fit and I wanted to get some exercise. But that wasn't the only reason I decided to do a sport. Students who play sports usually do (well) at school. They are more confident and less stressed. Exercise also helps learning and memory.
But I couldn't decide on a sport, First, I tried soccer. I had played a bit of soccer before and I thought it wouldn't be too bad. I couldn't run for very long without (feel) tired, On the first day, I was able to run for the first ten minutes, then I was so tired that I couldn't even kick the ball!
Then, I tried volleyball. (thing) were a bit better this time. I was able to run for the first twenty minutes and I wasn't the slowest runner in the team!
After a few weeks, I could run faster and longer, I was doing better and feeling better. Then I found volleyball (terrible) boring. Maybe I'm not a team sportsperson after all!
Finally, I tried kung fu. It's great sport that exercises the body and the mind. I learn to follow instructions carefully and do what I am asked to do. This is the right sport for me! I practised (two) a week and I haven't missed a class. I felt so confident when I (choose) to show some moves to the class last week! Can you believe it?
I hope you're OK! Write and let me know what you've been doing!
Jim
