    The Story of Niu Tianci is a Chinese play based on Chinese writer Lao She's 1934 novel of the same name. Unlike Lao She's other novels, such as Rickshaw Boy and Four Generations Under One Roof, The Story of Niu Tianci is less well-known and has never been adapted (改编) into a movie or theatrical production. The play is directed by Fang Xu, who has adapted five of Lao She's works into theatrical productions. Some young Chinese actors, including Guo Qilin in the lead role,play a role in the play. The play was first shown in Beijing's Tianqiao Performing Arts Centre on Dec. 25, 2019.

    The Story of Niu Tianci tells the story of an abandoned (被遗弃的) child, named Niu Tianci. He is later raised by a childless couple. They name him Niu Tianci, which means "the gift of heaven". Niu's mother wants him to become a government official, while his father hopes he can take over the family business. As a young man, Niu attends the best schools. But contrary to his parents' hopes, Niu is good at nothing. He feels lost and lonely after his parents die.

    The director of the play, Fang Xu, uses puppets (木偶)to perform with real actors on the stage (舞台). It makes the play more interesting. People who have watched the play all speak highly of it. The Story of Niu Tianci toured around China in 2020.
