All living things on the earth depend on the sun. Without the sun all living things on the earth will die.

The sun is a star. In space there are thousands of stars like the sun. They are almost as large as it and as hot as it. At night you can see many stars, but in the daytime you can only see one star--the sun.

The sun is much nearer to us than any other stars. That is why it looks like the biggest and brightest of all the stars. The distance(距离) of the sun from the earth is as much as 150 million kilometres. Most of the stars are thousands of light years away from the earth.

Do you know what a light year is? Light travels about300, 000 kilometres a second(秒). One light year is how far light travels in one year.

A Journey to Mars

With the development of the technology, we can travel into the space at any time. Last time I went to Mars with my family.

Venus is the second nearest planet from the sun. It is only a little smaller than the earth, about 95 %of the earth's diameter (直径) and 80 %of the earth's mass (质量). Earth and Venus are sometimes called the twin planets.

The word Venus means the goddess of love and beauty in Greek. ____▲____ probably because it is one of the brightest planets we have known by now. We human beings have known Venus for a long time. It has a cloudy atmosphere (大气层). This helps it reflect (反射)sunlight. So it appears to be very bright. It is easily observed in the sky. It is seen near the sun. It seems that it is the brightest thing in the sky except the sun and the moon. Venus reaches its maximum (最大的) brightness shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset, and is often thought as the Morning Star or as the Evening Star. A lot of observation (观察)of Venus was important to Copernicus's Heliocentric Theory  (日心说) of the solar system.

Scientists for years thought that Venus was very likely to have life in some ways. In 1962, scientists sent the first spacecraft to explore Venus, and we will know more about Venus in the future.

My friend, James, has a dream. He hopes that one day he can have a trip to the (宇宙) because he wants to know what the space is like. He wants to bean (宇航员). He wants to know the feeling staying in an (环境)with no air. But he knows it is not an easy thing. After (交流) with his father, he finds he has lots of things to do. He not only needs good knowledge about space but also a (强壮的)body. Now, he has a plan to realise his dream. First of all, in order to know more about space, he will join a science (组). Then, he decides to join a (运动)club. He has (从不) been very active(活跃的), and he doesn't like sports. But this time he makes a (决定)to change himself. He believes that nothing is (不可能的) if he tries his best.

Space travel is nothing new. The first spaceship a person was sent up into space in 1961. Since then, people have not only travelled to space, but many of them (live) there for some time.

Astronauts visited and often lived in these space stations a short time. However, it wasn't until the late 1980s when the Soviet Union (苏联)  (send) the Mir space station that people began (live) in space for a longer time. Mir stayed in space from 1989 until 2001, it was decided that the space station was too old and no (long) safe to live in.

Living in space stations seems to be fun, astronauts face many problems. One of (they) is food. Without the help of gravity (重力), (sit ) down to eat can be hard. Astronauts sometimes have to fix(固定)themselves to the wall while eating.

Rockets can fly far out into space. Rockets with people in them13the moon. Several rockets without people in them have14to another planet much farther away than the moon. One day rockets may be able to go to15place in space.

The solar system has eight planets. The planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The planets are all round, like balls. The planets all go around the sun. Mercury is the closest to the sun. It is very hot on Mercury. The planets far away from the sun are very cold. Venus is between Mercury and the earth. It is sometimes called Earth's " sister planet "because they have almost the same size and shape. The earth is where we live. From space, the earth looks blue because it has so much water. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. Saturn is known for having rings around it. Uranus was the first planet discovered with a telescope. We can see Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn with our eyes; however, to see Uranus, we need a telescope. Neptune is the 8th planet in our solar system. The planet is the farthest from the sun.

Probes(探测器) go into space and take pictures of the planets. We learn a lot from these pictures. If you could send a probe to any planet, where would you send it?
