In a primary school of Sichuan Province, kids are looking forward to cool hairstyles (发型) around a table.

Yang Cheng is one of them. He came to the school to be a volunteer teacher in September 2020.

"Most of the children live far from here, and they can't go home until the weekend. It's not convenient for them to have their hair cut," said Yang. ""

"At first, we didn't know how to cut hair. Then we learnt it from online videos in our free time," Yang added. "We even practised cutting each other's hair."

The teachers volunteer to cut hair every weekend in schools and villages. In addition, they can help the kids develop good hygiene (卫生) habits. "I like the teachers very much, and I want to say thank you to them," said a student.

The team tries to help those students who are unable to go home at the weekend. They teach them how to wash hair and clothes so that they can have a home-like feeling at school.

Giraffe was arrogant(傲慢的). His friend Mouse Deer seldom heard (please) words from him. He disliked Giraffe, but he hid his (think) and said nothing.

One day, Mouse Deer challenged Giraffe to catch him. Mouse Deer zigzagged(曲折前行) as quickly as possible through the narrow path. Giraffe could run faster, he had difficulty catching Mouse Deer because he was not good at zigzagging. Then, Mouse Deer ran into dark cave. Giraffe kept (run) after him.

"Ouch! Help me!" Giraffe fell to the ground and hurt his leg. Mouse Deer looked the source(来源) of Giraffe's voice and found him. "OK, I've got your body. I will support you to walk out of this cave. Look at the light! That's the way out."

Finally, they got out of the cave (separate). Giraffe (give) the first aid (急救) by Mouse Deer immediately.

"Why do you help me?" asked Giraffe. "I'm your friend. Friendship requires us (respect) each other. Everyone has (they) own strength and weakness, so we shouldn't look down upon others." said Mouse Deer.

Kevin had a happy family, but his family was in trouble. His mother got ill and it cost lots of money to see a 1. What was worse, his father just lost his job. Kevin's parents didn't tell anything to him, so he knew nothing about it.

A boy named Yes lived in a small kingdom. He had a brother named No. No was different from Yes, and he wasn't good at anything.

One day, Yes and No's father, Okay, asked his two sons to take it in turns to look after his animals. Yes did his job very well, but No felt bored with it. He just lay down and forgot about the animals. When the animals ran on the road, the King's carriage was passing by. He fell off the carriage and hurt himself.

The King was very angry. He ordered Yes and No to work for him as punishment. Soon he found that Yes was helpful. However, every time he asked No to do something, he always messed it up.

One day, the King decided to have a big party. The first cook said, "I bring my apple pie for the party." The King thought that apple pie would be delicious, so he asked Yes to get it. The next cook said, "I offer the King chicken soup." The King didn't like it. "No!" he shouted. Then No dropped the soup before the King could even smell it.

Soon this started catching on around the kingdom. If people liked something, they would say "Yes". If they didn't want anything, they would say "No". Ever since, Yes has meant yes, and No has meant no in the kingdom.

You might have heard of Bear Grylls. He is a famous traveller from the UK. He likes to travel to beautiful and dangerous places around the world. But more than 400 years ago in China, there was a traveller even cooler than Bear Grylls. He spent 30 years travelling across China. His name was Xu Xiake.

Where did Xu go?

Xu travelled to 21 provinces and over 100 cities in China. He climbed thousands of mountains and found more than 350 caves.  ①He was the first person to find the highest peak of Huangshan Mountain. He was also the first to find lots of karst caves (喀斯特溶洞). What's more, he first found out the Yangtze River's headwater.

Xu travelled mostly on foot. He often slept and ate in the wild. On his way, he was robbed (被抢劫) three times. Sometimes he fell into rivers or ran into dangerous animals. But he never gave up and enjoyed his journey. ②

How did Xu start his journey?

Xu Xiake was born in Jiangsu Province. When he was a child, Xu enjoyed reading books about Chinese mountains and rivers. ③

At that time, many kids were studying hard to become officials (官员). But Xu's father never made him take any exams. Instead, he encouraged his son to go outside and find out the new world. Xu began his journey when he was about 20 years old. ④

Xu always kept a diary while travelling. The Travel Diary of Xu Xiake is still popular among people today.

Humans are good at telling whether another person is looking at them from a distance.

When you catch someone looking at you, what makes you feel their watching? Often, it's the position of the person's head or body. If both his or her head and body are turned towards you, it's clear where the person's attention is focused (集中). It's even clearer when the person's body is pointed away from you but his or her head is facing you. When this happens, you immediately look into the person's eyes to see where he or she is looking.

Human eyes are different from those of other animals. Our pupils (瞳孔) and irises (虹膜) are darker than the white part of the eyeball known as the sclera (巩膜). This is why we can know it when someone is looking at us or simply looking past us. We evolved (进化) to have larger white scleras which help us make eye contact. However, animals don't want the animals that they hunt to know where they're looking, so their eyes are different from ours.

But when head and body positions don't provide much information, research shows that we can still know another person's long look well. Clifford, a researcher, tested this by asking people to point out where different eyes were looking. He found that in situations where we weren't sure where a person was looking, our brain told us that we were being watched.
