—I'd love to, _____ I have watched it twice. The movie is really wonderful.
—My father has made a _____ that he will take me to climb Mountain Tai next month.
—I think ________ cars we drive, ________ pollution our city will have.
As a young boy, I enjoyed listening to my father telling his childhood stories. The picture of him and his friends climbing to the top of a tree to look at a bird's nest(巢)stayed in my mind for quite a while. I dreamed of looking at a bird's nest that had eggs or small baby birds inside like my father did when he was a boy.
But that was almost impossible.
First, youngsters today are not allowed to climb trees. People think it's too dangerous. Second, we don't have so many birds' nests around anymore.
However, early one spring day, my dream came true.
It was a Saturday morning. My dad's best friend, who I call Uncle Ben, invited us to visit his business. He sold used cars at his shop outside the city. It was a large parking lot.
Uncle Ben led us through the parking lot, pointing out all kinds of different cars. As we walked across the lot, we suddenly found something unusual—a bird's nest on the back wheel of a car!
I was excited to be so close. I looked at the nest in amazement. It was real—a real bird's nest with four eggs sitting inside.
Uncle Ben took a look at the eggs. He said it was a robin's nest. To protect the nest from being destroyed (破坏),he suggested that we move it to a tree beside the parking lot. We all hoped that the robin would find her new home and her baby birds.
I decided to meet my sponsored(被资助的) child, 12-year-old Natacha Etienne. She survived(幸存) the earthquake in Haiti. After a two-hour drive, I found myself in a beautiful place w Natacha's family live.
When I first saw Natacha, waiting in her best clothes, I felt like giving her a hug , but I d . She had never seen me b. With half of the villagers gathering to look at me, Natacha stood back, silent and shy.
When I pulled out photos, hand-written messages and drawings I'd received from Natacha, her shyness was gone and she began to talk to me. Her parents greeted me with w hugs and nervous smiles.
Her parents thanked me repeatedly for coming. Her father opened some drinks, and we drank and t. I learnt that their only plan was to get all their eight children educated, s they could get a chance to leave Haiti. "You are like
a mother for Natacha," they said. "You pay for her education and we are really thankful to you."
I took part in the sponsor activity, hoping it could help children like Natacha have a c to go to school. I believe my little contribution (捐助) will c their lives. Now I realize that writing letters and sending photos are of great importance to Natacha, because they are all small g sent with great love.
Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants.
Sometimes, the word "green" means young, fresh and growing. For example, a greenborn is someone who has no experience. In the 15th century, a greenborn was a young cow or an ox whose borns (角) had not yet developed. A century later, a greenborn was a soldier who had no experience in war. By the 18th century, a greenborn had the meaning it has today—a person who is new in a job.
Someone who is good at growing plants is said to have a green thumb(大拇指). The expression comes from the early 20th century. A person with a green thumb can make plants grow quickly and well. The Green Revolution(绿色革命) is the name given some years ago to the development of new kinds of rice and other grains. It was the result of hard work by agricultural 农业的scientists who had green thumbs.
Green is also the color used to describe the powerful feeling. Jealousy(嫉妒). The green eyed monster is not a dangerous animal from outer space. It is an expression used about 400 years ago by the British writer William Shakespeare in his play "Othello". It describes the unpleasant feeling when someone has something he wants.
In most places in the world, a green light is a signal(信号) to move ahead. In everyday speech, a green light means approval(赞成) to continue with a project.
