William Kamkwama was born in Malawi, a country in Africa, where modern science was not known. It was also a land with drought(干旱) and hunger. So it is a place where hope and chances are hard to find. But 14-year-old William didn't think so. William liked reading and he has read a book about windmills(风车) called Using Energy. Then he had a dream of building one that would bring electricity and water to his village and change his life and lives of those around him. His neighbors laughed at him at first and thought that was mad. Although William's parents couldn't pay for his education, he refused to let go of his dreams.
After being hungry for five months on his family's small farm, William began to collect materials from his father's broken bike to his mother's clothes line. With all these materials, William built a simple windmill that could offer power of four lights and get clean water from the underground. Although electricity and water are common, only 2% of Malawians could afford them. William's invention can offer water for both drinking and watering.
"I want to build windmills across Malawi and perhaps beyond(超过). A windmill means more than just power;it means freedom, " William said.
