Fifty Jobs in Fifty Weeks

    Daniel was disappointed as he walked out of his 40th job interview. He couldn't believe he had failed 40 interviews. He just finished his university study and needed to get a job fast. He was almost broke(身无分文的). He decided that he would start a new project called “Living the Map”. He wanted to get 50 jobs in 50 states in only 50 weeks.

    Daniel's idea may sound crazy, but it is really clever. Daniel said that one of his goals was to get as much job experience as possible. He was still not sure what kind of job he really wanted. The best way to find out was to try out different types of jobs. So, he tried to get jobs that were related to each state's identity(特点). For example, Michigan is famous for having a lot of car factories, so during his week in Michigan, he worked as a mechanic.     Wisconsin is known for its cheese, so he was a cheese maker there. In Vermont he made maple syrup, and in Maryland he was a crab chef.

    Daniel not only had fun trying all kinds of interesting jobs， but he also made 60, 000 dollars and became famous. He plans to publish a book about what he learned from his project. In the beginning, Daniel wanted to get as much job experience as possible, but instead became famous- or was he hoping to become famous from the beginning?     Firefighter Regina Wilson works in Brooklyn, New York. A reporter is asking Regina questions about how she does her job.

    Reporter: How long have you been a firefighter?

    Wilson: Eight years.

    Reporter: How did you get started?

    Wilson: First, I had to take a lot of tests. Then, I went to firefighter school for 13 weeks. I learned how to put out fires and how to use equipment (设备), such as the ax (斧头) and the fire hose (灭火水龙头).I also had to train every day!

    Reporter: How do you stay safe on the job?

Wilson: I wear special clothing called bunker gear. It helps keep me safe from fire. I also carry an oxygen tank and a mask. They help me to breathe in a smoke-filled building.

    Reporter: Are there any new tools that firefighters use?

Wilson: We have a special camera that can see in the dark. It can find heat. That way, we can tell where a fire is.

    Reporter; Do you save pets?

    Wilson: I recently helped save some kittens (小猫). They were hiding under the beds. Pets usually hide during a fire because they are scared.

    Reporter: Do you ever get afraid?

    Wilson: There is no time to be afraid. I think about what I have to do to put out the fire safely.

    Reporter: What do you like best about being a firefighter?

    A newspaper reporter's job can be very interesting. He meets all kinds of people and lives quite a busy life. He is on the rush for news all the time, then after several years he may get a desk job, and life becomes a bit safer. Let's look at his work a little more closely.     Mr. King works very long hours every day. He usually gets up at 5: 30. He brushes his teeth quickly and goes to his workplace(工作地点). Then he runs with some kids. After that he takes a shower. He eats his breakfast at 7:00. His work starts at 8:10. He is good at maths and many boys and girls learn maths from him. All the kids like him very much. He often talks or plays games with the kids. He usually goes to bed after 22:00. He is often very tired but he likes his job and loves the kids. He doesn't work on weekends. Mr. King likes reading at home on weekends. Sometimes some kids' parents come to his home to talk about their kids. When Monday comes, Mr. King gets busy again.
