There are many ways for us to reduce waste. For 1, we can reuse paper and plastic bags. We can also recycle newspapers, glass, and cans to2 new things. Here are some 3 ways to reduce waste.

Write on 4 sides of paper.

    Many people write on only one side of their paper. Why not stop 5the other side? Some students only use half the pages of their notebooks before getting new ones. Try to use up all the paper. People often give cards on birthdays or festivals. How about trying to 6 e-cards instead?

Don't throw away your old batteries (电池).

    Maybe you do not know that old batteries make the earth dirty. This is 7  they have poisonous parts in them. So, don't throw away batteries. Keep them together. Try to use rechargeable (充电的) batteries for your games and CD players.

    Give off all your unwanted clothes.

    There are many poor families in China. You may ask your mother to 8 your unwanted(多余的) 9. Then you can pass them on to those poor children. You will feel 10that you are helping someone else. Also, you can understand if your friends or relatives (亲戚) want them before throwing them away.

    You can't always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belvacv doesn't think that forgetting to check the weather report before heading out should result in you getting wet. To protect people from the rain, he created lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella.

    The designer says he comes up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. "Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be all right to have a canopy (伞蓬) built into a street lamp." he said.

    The lampbrella is a street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella in need. Sensors(传感器)then make sure that the umbrella offers the walkers whenever it starts raining.

    In addition to the rain sensor, there's also a 360° motion sensor on the street lamp which finds out whether anyone's using the lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.

    According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a low speed, so as not to cause harm to the walkers. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each lampbrella would offer enough protection for several people. Being fixed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of walkers.

    While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyacv says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be fixed on my street where a lot of people walk.

    Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable (一次性的) toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers. Many guests like the idea because they don't have to bring their own. But, if you travel to Beijing, remember to bring your own things. Starting from June, some hotels in Beijing will no longer provide guests with these disposables. They want to ask people to use less disposable things.

    Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It is a waste of natural resources (资源) and is very bad for the environment. Do you know, one Chinese person makes as much as 400kg of waste a year! Most of that waste comes from disposable things. In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of plastic lunch bowls every year! Plastic can take between 100 and 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw out, the better. So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again.

    Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life: Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones. After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then you can use it over and over again. Do not use paper cups. At your school canteen(食堂), use your own bowl and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.
