A month ago my oldest daughter, Rachel, asked me   to make friends. She is seven years old and a little shy. I told her the best way  (make) friends was to introduce (her) when she met someone new. The question didn't come up again, and I didn't give it another (think).

Last weekend I (take) my two daughters to the lake a couple of blocks from our house. There are two parks (locate) around the lake, and since it was a nice day, we visited them both. There were lots of children around for my oldest daughter to play .

I was helping my youngest daughter, Sydney, down the slide(滑梯) something caught my attention. I got the warmest feeling as I heard Rachel tell all the kids, "My name is Rachel, and I'm seven. What's your name?" It worked (well) than I had ever imagined, and before long she  (know) every kid's name, and they were all playing tag—a kind of game!

Last night was the last game for my eight-year-old son's soccer team. It was the final quarter. The score was two to one, and my son's team was in the lead. Parents surrounded the playground, offering encouragement.

With less than ten seconds remaining, the ball suddenly rolled in front of my son's teammate, Mickey O'Donnell. With shouts of "Kick it!" echoing(回响)across the playground, Mickey turned around and gave it everything he had. All around me the crowd cheered. Mickey had scored!

Then there was silence. Mickey had scored all right, but in the wrong goal, ending the game in a tie. For a moment there was a total hush. You see, Mickey has Down's syndrome(唐氏综合征)and for him there is no such thing as a wrong goal. All goals were celebrated by a happy hug from Mickey. He had even been known to hug the opposing players when they scored.

The silence was finally broken when Mickey, his face filled with joy, hugged my son tightly and shouted, "I scored! I scored! Everybody won! Everybody won!" For a moment I held my breath, not sure how my son would react(反应). I need not have worried. I watched, through tears, as my son threw up his hand in the classic high-five salute(敬礼)and started chanting, "Way to go Mickey! Way to go Mickey!" Within moments both teams surrounded Mickey, joining in the chant and congratulating him on his goal.

Later that night, when my daughter asked who had won, I smiled as I replied, "It was a tie. Everybody won. "

    2. (2) It can be inferred from the passage that       .

Christine was just a girl in my class. I never knew much about her except for that she was strange. She didn't talk many. Her hair was black and purple, and she worn black sports shoes and a black sweater, although in summer. She was, in fact, rather attractively, and she never seemed care what the rest of us thought about her. Like the rest of my classmate, I didn't really want to get closest to her. It was only when we did their chemistry project together that I begin to understand why Christine dressed the way she did.

Easy Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp

Everyone is forgetful, but as we age, we start to feel like our brains are slowing down a bit—and that can be a very annoying thing.  Read on for some techniques worth trying.

        ⒈

People who regularly made plans and looked forward to upcoming events had a 50 percent reduced chance of Alzheimer's disease (阿茨海默症), according to a recent study.  Something as simple as setting a goal to have a weekly coffee date with a friend will do. There's evidence that people who have a purpose in life or who are working on long or short-term goals appear to do better. In other words, keep your brain looking forward.

        ⒉Go for a walk.

Mildly raised glucose (葡萄糖) levels can harm the area of the brain that helps you form memories and physical activity can help get blood glucose down to normal levels. In fact, exercise produces chemicals that are good for your brain.

        ⒊Learn something new.

Take a Spanish class online, join a drawing club, or learn to play cards. A study found that mental stimulation (刺激) limits the weakening effects of aging on memory and the mind. But the best thing for your brain is when you learn something new and are physically active at the same time.  Or go dancing with your friends.

    A. Focus on the future.

    B. This can be especially harmful to the aged.

    C. It should be something like learning gardening.

    D. So take a few minutes each day to do some reading.

    E. But don't worry if your schedule isn't filled with life-changing events.

    F. Luckily, research shows there is a lot you can do to avoid those moments.

    G. In other words, when you take care of your body, you take care of your brain.

Every one of us knows that Albert Einstein was a world-famous scientist. Perhaps we don't know much about his life. Here are some amusing anecdotes about him.

When he arrived in New York to be a professor at Princeton University, Einstein was anxious to avoid visitors and newsmen. So his friends took him off the ship secretly before it docked (靠上码头) and hurried him away by car.

Einstein said that only twelve people at that time understood his Theory of Relativity (相对论), although more than nine hundred books had been written to explain it.

Mrs Einstein admitted that even she did not understand the Theory of Relativity, but she understood something far more important for a wife;she understood her husband.

She used to invite some friends in for tea and then she would ask her husband to come downstairs and join them. "No!" Einstein would say with anger. He simply couldn't stand those "interruptions (打扰)".

But Mrs Einstein persuaded her husband with great patience and had him drink tea with them and take a good rest.

Mrs Einstein said that her husband liked order in his thinking, but he didn't like it in his life. He did whatever he wanted to.

Einstein had only two rules of conduct (行为准则):one was "Don't be restrained (限制) by any rule", and the other was "Be independent from the opinions of others".

Einstein led a very simple life. When he went out, he was always in old clothes, and seldom did he wear a hat. He liked to whistle and sing in the bathroom.

He shaved with the same soap as he used for his bath. It seems strange that the great scientist trying to solve the mysteries of the universe should consider that using two pieces of soap made life too complicated.

Einstein said he was happy because he didn't want money or titles or foolish praises. He made his own happiness out of such simple things as playing the violin and sailing his boat.

Einstein's violin brought him more joy than anything else in his life. He said he often thought in music and made his day-dreams in music.

    1. (1) Albert Einstein was taken off the ship secretly by his friends because       .
    2. (2) Usually Einstein would refuse to join some friends, for       .
    3. (3) Why did he shave with the same soap as he used for his bath?

If you want to become a fluent English speaker and be good at writing, you should take some advice. There are four skills in learning English which are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must bear in mind is that reading and listening are inputs whereas speaking and writing are outputs. In other words, if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you should first master the skills of reading and listening.

Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the structure, unfamiliar words etc. as you read. There is no need that you pay attention to grammar or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognise them whenever you see them, for example, in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.

As for listening, there are two choices: aside from reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, and then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practise listening.

For listening I advise cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy and do not contain difficult phrases or slang (俚语) terms. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs broadcast every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes.

If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically (自动地), and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect.

    1. (1) According to the author, which should you improve first among the four skills?
    2. (2) To improve your reading, when you read you should       .
    3. (3) The author seems to agree with the view that       .
