Don't listen to people who say that young people today often think only of themselves. It's not true at all. More and more young people in the USA volunteer to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don't do it for money. Here are some of their stories.
Alice Hamilton, 17
I'm going to help the Forest Center build new hiking paths(小道)in the mountains. It's going to be fantastic-I will spend the whole summer living in a tent(帐篷)and breathing the clean mountain air. I'm going to sleep under the stars. It will be a nice experience, and I will be able to do something good at the same time!
Jason Moore, 18
This summer, I'll join in the Special House program. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to families that are not very rich. They'll teach me what to do, so I am going to help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses.

I'm going to teach children who have trouble in reading. I'm going to work for a program called Reading for Life. Every day, ⑷I'm going to help children choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher, and I love children and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me.

Helping others is a great thing to do. You can learn new things and have fun. You can help people, animals or the environment. It can make you feel good too! How can you help? Charities are organizations that help others, for example, UNICEF or the World Wildlife Fund. You can help charities by giving your time, giving money or giving things that you own. You can also help people or places you know. Volunteering Volunteering is when you give your time to help others. Some ways of volunteering are: visiting old people to talk to them or help them walking dogs at an animal shelter cleaning up a park. Fund-raising Fund-raising is when you collect money to help others. Some ways of fund-raising are: making cakes or biscuits to sell doing a sponsored (赞助) activity. For example, family and friends give you money if you finish a long walk. Donating Donating is when you give your things to help others. Some ways of donating are: giving your old toys or clothes to a charity that helps sick children or poor people giving your old books to a library. So, what can you do to help others? |

When Xiaoyun left university earlier this year, her parents wanted her to look for a job in their hometown. But Xiaoyun made a different . She decided to work as a in a small school.
The school is in a poor village. When Xiaoyun got there, she that most of the children in the village were with their grandparents, and that many of them didn't go to school. Their parents were all working in cities far away from the village, and they only came back once or twice a year. So the children always felt .
Every day after school, Xiaoyun went to visit those children who didn't come to school. She told them the of getting an education. She also invited them to work with her to repair the desks and chairs at school, and then she made delicious food for them.
Xiaoyun tried her best the school more like home to those children. Day by day more and more children came to school and they a lot. Thanks to Xiaoyun, now the children are much and healthier than ever before.
