If you have no special plans for your holidays, why not spend your time helping others? More and more young people in the US volunteer (志愿) to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don't do it for money. Here are some of their stories.
Alice Hamilton, 17 I'm going to help Forest Centre build new hiking paths in the mountains. It's going to be nice. I will spend the whole summer living in a tent and breathing the fresh mountain air. I'm going to sleep under the stars. It will be a nice sport, and I will be able to do something good at the same time! |
. Jason Moore, 18 This summer, I'll volunteer with Special House Programme. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to the poor. They'll teach me what to do, so I am going to help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses. |
Trish Anderson, 16 I'm going to teach children who have difficulty in reading. Every day, I'm going to help children choose and read books that they like. I want to be a Chinese teacher, and I love children and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me. |

When I was little, one of my favourite holiday traditions was making a wish list for Santa Claus(圣诞老人). Every year, my father helped me1all that I wanted. Often, I put food on the list: chocolates, candies... One year, I even asked for my favourite2!
As I grew older, I no longer wrote to Santa Claus, but I never 3making a list of the things that I most liked or wanted.
One year, l went to China to work in a 4. In China, most people don't celebrate Christmas. 5, they celebrate Chinese New Year. In my classes, I asked my students to make lists for Santa Claus. But they6me. "We get lucky money at Chinese New Year, "one girl told me. "That's better than gift from Santa Claus!" I nodded. Maybe she was 7!
On Christmas Eve, my friends and I went walking in the city. 8 Christmas isn't a holiday in China, many people were out in the streets and having fun. They 9Santa hats, ate candies and said "Merry Christmas" to us in English. They knew we were10.
After a few hours, my friends and I were 11 and a bit cold. "One Christmas when I was small, I wished for soup from Santa Claus, "I told my friends. They laughed.
We went into a restaurant and sat at a table. 12, my friends cried out. "Look, Beth, your 13 is coming true!"
I turned around. "Santa Claus" stood 14 me. Well, it was the waiter, but he was dressed in a red and white Santa Claus suit!
"Merry Christmas. What can I get for you?"15asked.
"Soup!" we said in chorus (齐声).
Percy is a park keeper. He looks after the park and his animal friends. The animals often need Percy's help, and he is always there to give them a hand. After the Storm is a heart-warming story about Percy and his animal friends.
There was a great storm at night. Percy thought about his animal friends in the park and he couldn't sleep all night.
When he got up the next morning, he found that the old oak tree (橡树) had fallen down because of the strong wind. He was very sad. The tree was one of Percy's favourites and some of Percy's animal friends lived there. Now they lost their home. Percy decided to find a new home for the animals. Percy took them to the pine wood and the shrubbery (灌木丛), but no one wanted to live there. After going across the lake, Percy found a nice place for the animals' new home. Percy said clearly what he wanted each one to do. They got to work. The fox made holes and the rabbits knocked the nails(钉子). The mice were busy carrying things for everyone else. At last, they built a new tree house better than before.
After the Storm is easy for children to read. It helps children learn more about natural disasters (灾害) and the importance of kindness and teamwork.
Last month, we took a trip to the south of France. My parents (choose) the city of Arles because Vincent van Gogh painted some of his most famous works here.
We went to France train. It ran well on time, and we (easy) found a taxi to the hotel outside the Arles train station. Our hotel was on a busy street in centre of the city. It was comfortable with beautiful floors clean rooms.
We spent our first day (walk) around the city. Near the train station, there's a famous square. Van Gogh used to live around there. Across from the square, there are city (wall) and an ancient gate. In the city, many places of interest were waiting for (we) to discover.
As for food, we had fish, vegetables and rice. Those dishes all tasted delicious. Patisserie du Forum, the restaurant next to the main square in Arles, has the (good) ice cream, I think.
On the last day of our trip, we took a tour of the Camargue, outside of Arles. the waiting time was a little long, the place was beautiful in every way. We were able to see flamingos (火烈鸟) and a beautiful beach there.
In short, we really had a wonderful time there!
