Terry from Kenya has spent 20 years in the city he now calls home. Having lived in Beijing for more than 20 years, Terry has finally made his Chinese dream come true—becoming a volunteer.

He often gives tourists directions, gets water for a baby and even helps a neighbor sell cold drinks. "I like helping other people," he said. "This is where I live, where my friends are and where I call home." Terry became interested in Chinese culture as a teenager when he read the Tao Te Ching by Laozi.

In 1981, he went to Shanghai. His first visit to Beijing was six years later on business. Terry and his family moved to Beijing in 1997, and since then he has lived and worked in Beijing. Now Terry can make traditional noodles, and when he goes to a restaurant, he usually orders dumplings and some traditional Beijing dishes.

He likes chatting (聊天) with people there, especially taxi drivers. "I am more familiar with the lives of taxi drivers than most Beijingers," he said. "When I see their license numbers, I can tell how many years they have worked." "They are so knowledgeable," he said. "I learned many Chinese from them."

Terry does not want to leave Beijing. He said, "Your home is where your things are. In this sense, Beijing is my home. Now I just enjoy living here."

There was a sign on the bridge. It says, "Danger!" But a driver did not see it. When he drove the van through the bridge, there came 1 , and the van suddenly stopped.

Good habits are important in our lives. They influence (影响) us a lot in many ways.

We know that moving house is a troublesome business. So I make a plan for my moving. Here is my plan.

Once there were two neighbors. One of them was an old teacher and the other was an office worker. Both of them planted the same plants in their gardens. The old teacher gave a little water to his plants every day and didn't always care for them, while his neighbor gave much water to his plants and looked after them well.

The old teacher's plants were simple but looked good. The office worker's plants were much taller and greener. One night, there was a heavy rain. The next morning, the office worker saw his plants were uprooted (连根拔起), but the old teacher's plants stood firmly (稳固地).

The neighbor was surprised and went to the old teacher and asked, "We both grew the same plants together. I looked after my plants better than you did, and I even gave them more water. However, my plants were uprooted, while yours weren't. Why?"

Mom and dad are two of the most important people in your life. . If your mom loves to read, you may like to take a book wherever you go, just like she does. 

But many kids can't get on well with their parents. The kids don't think that their parents can understand them. Some kids always say their parents are too strict with them. ? Here are some tips. 

Spend more time together. Don't spend so much time playing computer games or watching TV. . Go out to do something, try some new games, or just read a book together. 

Share your feelings and ask for help. Many kids want their parents to help them when they feel upset, but your mom and dad may not know that you are having a problem. Tell them what's the matter with you and they will be glad to help you. 

. You don't have to be perfect (完美的), but if you do your best, you'll make your parents happy.

How to find and keep your friendship

Every one of us, rich or poor, should at least have one or two good friends. Your friends will listen to you when you speak, will take care of you when you are sick, and will be together with you in your journey through life. Everyone needs friends. Friendship can make us happier.

How can we find a good friend and get on well? Here is some advice.

★Make friends with a person who is easy to get along with.

★You should make friends with a person who has something in common with you. If you have something in common with your friend, you will be interested in talking with him or her.

★Give your friend a hand when he or she is in trouble. Friends should always be ready to help each other.

If a member of the family or a friend has flu, stay away from them until they are well. Flu is very communicable(会传染的)and you can catch it by going with the person with flu. Wear a mask and avoid using things that the person with    flu is using.

Exercising will make you stronger which means a stronger immune（免疫)system too.

Happy people are healthy people. Their life is stress-free, so they are more likely to be safe from illness.如果你不开心，你将会很容易生病。

It is most difficult for parents to decide whether to have a second child or not. 

It is often heard that a single child is likely to be a lonely child. There are no other children in the family for the child to talk to or play with. An only child is not able to get along well with children of his age. Some parents feel sad about making the decisions to have only one child. 

But the number of parents choosing to have only one child is increasing in many parts of the world. In the US, for example，more than 14 percent of women between 18 and 34 plan to have just one child. The same can be seen in the UK. In Japan，the average (平均) number of children born per family had gone down to 1. 42 by 1996. 

For some single-child parents，especially who are busy working every day, time and energy seem to be overwheIming. They don't have enough time and energy to share with more children. For other people，money is their first consideration. Many couples in Japan choose not to have large families as the cost of supporting a child up to the age of 18 reaches around $160, 000.
