A Volunteering Experience

Li Zixuan is a junior middle school student. He is now studying in Grade 8. He has had many dreams since he was little. But as time goes by, some new dreams have appeared (出现) and some old ones have disappeared. However, only one dream is still in his mind. 

Li Zixuan says that when he was a child, he heard about rockets (火箭) and spaceships. At first, he didn't know what they were. From his father, he knew that scientists make rockets to carry things into space, and spaceships are used to carry people through space. From then on, he has had a real interest in space. Every time he sees beautiful stars and the moon in the sky at night, he gets very excited. He is always dreaming that he can fly to space to look at the early one day. His mother knows about his dream and often encourages him. 

In school, Li Zixuan learned that the first man flew into space in 1961 and later, more astronauts succeeded in traveling into space. Some astronauts even landed on the moon. His teacher always encourages him to learn more. He knows not everyone has a chance to travel into space. More importantly, before he can fly to space, he must be trained specially. 

Li Zixuan knows it's not easy to achieve his dream, but he decided to try his best. He says, "I've had this dream for many years. It has brought me a lot of joy (快乐) and always gives me power (力量). Even if it doesn't come true in the end, I won't be sorry."

I have a cold. My throat is  and my head hurts. Last night, I had a bad . The fever made my body feel hot. I can't go to school. And my friends can't visit me, . Because if one of us gets a cold, often all of us get it. 

Here are three ways to help us to  a cold spreading (传播) and feel better again. 

, wash your hands. Washing your hands is the most important way. Cold germs (细菌) are spread by touch. The germs get on to your hands and from there into your eyes, nose and mouth. So if we wash hands , we won't get the cold easily. 

Next, cover your nose and mouth. Always use a handkerchief (手帕) to cover your mouth and nose  you are coughing and sneezing (打喷嚏). That way, the germs won't get onto your hands and spread. 

Finally, clean your house and look after . Be sure to use only your own toothbrush and cup… 

But if you get , you should see a doctor. Then eat healthy food such  soup or rice. Get enough rest and sleep. 

Remember that a common cold only lasts a few days. You'll feel better soon.

Jenny was driving home when the accident happened. A truck hit a car, but the truck driver didn't stop. The truck was gone! 

Jenny thought that the people in the car must be badly hurt and she should help them. Not thinking of the danger, Jenny hurried to the other side of the road. Looking into the car, she saw two adults (成年人) and two kids. Jenny was happy to see all of them alive, but the man, the driver, got badly hurt. 

Jenny pulled one of the car doors, but she couldn't move it. She went to the next door and opened it a little. "Please get our kids out first," said the woman. Jenny pulled the little boy out of the car first and then the little girl. She took them to a safe place. When she went back to get the parents out, she found the door couldn't open wide enough for the parents to get out, Jenny thought of the toolbox (工具箱) in her car. She had something in it that could help get the door open. So she got the box quickly. 

As Jenny was working on the door, the father said, "Not many people would do what you're doing. You are brave and great. Thank you so much." 

"You just take it easy, and I'll get you out soon," said Jenny. As soon as she helped the woman and the man get out of the car, it caught fire.

Have you heard of the horse-face skirt? This Chinese skirt dates back to the Song Dynasty.

In 2022, French fashion (时尚) brand Dior  the design of the skirt. Many hanfu lovers began to  the knowledge of the skirt. This helped more people learn about traditional Chinese clothes. "For us, wearing the skirt is not just for ," said Mao, one of the hanfu lovers. "It also  our love for Chinese culture."

Recently, the skirt has gotten more love. Many famous Chinese people have worn it to international occasions (场合). And during this past Spring Festival, lots of young people wore the skirt when they went on .

People in other countries like the horse-face skirt, too. Chinese clothing companies have gotten a lot of  for it from abroad. A report studied how  the skirt was among foreign users of Chinese short video platforms.

Besides the skirt, "new Chinese-style clothes" is also a hot topic. They have  won the hearts of many people in the world.

China has entered the business of making planes. The first Chinese-made commercial (商业的) aircraft took off from Shanghai on Sunday.  The narrow-bodied C919 plane had 128 passengers on board.

The company that made the plane is known as the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd.  Newspapers in China called the C919 "a symbol of industrial prowess (工业造诣) and national pride".

A passenger on the flight was impressed with the plane. He said, " It was comfortable and unforgettable. I'll remember it for a long time."

COMAC hopes to be a major player in the commercial plane market. It hopes to compete with industry giants such as Boeing and Airbus. COMAC started developing the C919 in 2008 in China.  In September 2022, it passed the standards to fly commercially in China.

 It bought five of the aircraft. COMAC plans to build 150 planes each year for the next five years. A spokesperson said there were orders for more than 1,000 C919s from different Chinese airlines. He hoped airlines from other countries would soon start making orders. He added that the plane was "an important milestone (里程碑)" for China's aircraft industry.

Pressure and Pleasure

Nowadays many students say they are under much pressure. 

Science shows why we trust people who are confident. Imagine this: one person tells a lie confidently, while another says something true in a hesitant voice. Which person would you trust?

According to British scientist Dean Burnett, humans are far more likely to believe information expressed confidently by a confident person or in some other ways using confident language. "Humans trusting confident people over those who are more uncertain is a known thing," wrote Burnett for Science Focus magazine. "When two people are trying to make a decision but each person says different things, confidently expressed arguments are seen as passing on better information, which decides the decision."

Why is this the case? As Burnett said, humans are social animals. In our ancient past, most of our information about the world came from our tribe(部落), in other words, the people around us. So, if ancient humans heard someone confidently saying "There's a tiger coming" , believing what that person said could save our lives.

On a more personal level, we use our own experiences to understand what other people do and say. That's how our brain works. When we are confident, it's for good reason. Therefore , we believe that when someone else is being confident, they must have good reason, too.

However, we need to realize that confidently expressed information may be more persuasive(有说服力的), but that doesn't mean it's correct. As Burnett wrote, we are living in a more and more different world. Trusting very confident people without checking the facts can lead to "unexpected results".
