As a child, I'd spent entire afternoons 1 new worlds in my mind and giving life to 2 in my stories I wished could be my friends. I'd written myself into my favorite stories so I could be part of them. Writing was a part of me; it was who I was.

However, in high school I 3 with writer's block. By the time I was in college, I'd stopped writing entirely, 4 the dream remained. I wanted to 5 a novel one day. It was then that I read an interview with the Belgian writer Amélie Nothomb. She said she'd go crazy if she didn' t write; she needed to do it to stay 6 . Her words made me feel 7 . She was telling me that I wasn't really a writer.

Or so I thought. I tried again, and it was like feeling the sun on my skin, or hearing snow lightly fall. I hadn't realized it, but I hadn't really been happy until I 8 my pen again. Writing was in my blood after all.

Finally, half-hours 9 to writing stretched into hours. Before, I had been upset all the time because I didn't advance my writing projects. Now, every day was a step forward, and I was 10 with it. 

One day, I was reading a story in a library. 11 , an idea hit me that I wanted to submit(提交) a few stories. I didn't do it in the hopes they would get published.

And then, something 12 happened. The first story I submitted was chosen for publication! When I got the e-mail, I was wild with joy and 13 around my kitchen table. 

That moment 14 me that I must keep writing—not because I'll go 15 ，but because I want to keep being crazily happy like that.

It was snowing hard. Gus Kiebel, a county wildlife officer, was driving home from work when he 1 the pair in the flash of his headlights. The father-to-be scanned the roadside so that his struggling 2 might rest safely for the night. He looked over at her 3 . They needed a warm 4 from the bitter wind. 

Gus parked his truck and 5 the animals. He stretched out his hands to the beagles (比格犬), which made no effort to 6 . Then he dialed the number from the dogs' tags (标牌). A man answered and immediately grew 7 when Gus told him why he was calling. "I gave those dogs away," the man said. "They're not mine anymore." Then he hung up.

Obviously, these beagles were 8 . Then he brought the tired beagles home. As a boy, owning beagles had been his 9 , but keeping this pair was out of the question now—the Kiebels already had a family dog. So he 10 the League for Animal Welfare to drop them off—on one 11 . "I'm not signing the dogs over to you if you're going to 12 them," he said. The shelter workers promised him they'd keep the couple together.

In the following days, Gus phoned the shelter 13 to check up on them. Soon, the beagles were adopted as a pair, to a loving family. It's a simple story, but it 14 the best of our nature. And when kindness weighs more than 15 , it becomes the greatest miracle of all.

I am a native of Shenyang, China. I had my first book published at age 18. The book 1 my experiences as an international student attending high school in the state of Washington.

I experienced a significant 2 when I first came to the United States, and writing became my treatment, a way of self-healing and a 3 to explore my own identity.

I remember struggling at first to 4 the culture of Burien, Washington. Nobody told me how to 5 myself, so I used all kinds of activities to fill up my time. Yet the more activities I participated in, the deeper the 6 grew. I was always trying to 7 to everyone the best version of myself, but I felt lost inside.

Then I started writing my weekly thoughts in my blog. I discovered a deeper understanding of myself and this new world around me. The blog 8 turned into my book published in China I then decided to donate all the book sale income to 9 other students 

In 2015 the Reading Fund was born. Driven by the belief that nothing is more 10 than an educated mind, I established the charity 11 to provide educational books and resources for12 students in China and other countries. I had the 13 to enjoy good educational resources, but my 14 in the countryside need to walk miles to go to a school without 15 educational resources.

On the choppy waters of the Bay of Bengal, a ship 1 with migrant workers returned to Andhra Pradesh. One of the workers 2 out at the waves and had a dream about the 2-year-old son he hadn't seen since birth. The dream was filled with colors and promise.

When he 3 to his village, the man requested a meeting with the elders. 4 , the elders agreed, and the young son, Sam, became the only child in the village chosen to go to school.

"Even though many in my village hated me, and I often felt 5 , I kept going," says Sam, who continued his schooling even when his father died,6 the family to fend（照顾） for themselves for survival.

When Sam finished public school, he was accepted to an American university. It 7 he would have to leave his mother and brother living at the lowest level of 8 in the village. He wouldn't see them for two years. But his soul was good, and he was patient, even as his 9 hurt.

In university, his soul lit up, and he reveled in learning all he could 10 . From there, it was on to Washington, D. C. for a doctoral degree and a 11 in the Education Department.

Finally, Sam could fulfill the dream his father had for him: to bring 12 to the village. He sent most of his money back to the village to build a 13 school and pay for teachers. A brick building 14 on the dirt lot. Computers arrived, along with electricity and the internet. Sam returned every summer to work with the minister of education and invited every child to school.

"I have much," he says. "So I give much."

His father would be 15 .

Spear moved from the United States to Beijing 37 years ago. His 1 in China began during college when he took a class taught by a Chinese specialist. His love for China deepened when he met his wife-to-be, Tang, in 1980, and married her two years later. 

In 1986, he decided to 2 his doctoral studies in Chinese politics at the University of California, Berkeley, and move to China to get to the heart of things. 

He says that it was fate that led him to 3 beneath the Great Wall. In the 1990s, he and his 4 discovered their future home in Mutianyu. For nearly 10 years, the couple spent their weekends at this beautiful place before deciding to make it their 5 home in 2005.

As a（n）6 , Spear renovated （翻新） his dream house in a village near the Great Wall, which comes with multiple views of the Great Wall. Shortly after embracing full-time 7 life, Spear was approached by village head Li Lianting, who explained that Mutianyu was rapidly losing 8 and badly in need of local 9 . This motivated the architect to explore ways of 10 rural residents. 

After looking into the matter, he rented an old 11 schoolhouse and turned it into a restaurant and glass art factory to make it 12 . He has helped renovate around 20 13 where villagers no longer live. He 14 them into hotels or restaurants, which brought much income to villagers. In recognition of his 15 , Spear was given the Great Wall Friendship Award by the Beijing government in 2014.

Every Saturday, Grandpa and I walked to a nursing home. "Whoever visits the sick gives them life," Grandpa 1 believed.

One day Grandpa was suddenly 2 to hospital. Worse still, we were told he was 3 to recover, deep sadness over our family.

Saturday came. I had not 4 to go there, but Grandpa's words rang in my head. So alone I went. Everyone was happy to see me but 5 when not seeing Grandpa. When told his 6 , they comforted me in turn, "Do your best and God will do the rest." They all tried in their unique way to cheer me up and 7 for Grandpa.

For days, neither could Grandpa sit up, nor would he speak or eat. The atmosphere was awfully8 . Suddenly the nurse came in, saying, "You have visitors." I 9 . The guys Grandpa and I visited every Saturday were all present. 

They all showcased their best to the fullest, thus making grandpa's day. Visiting hours went so fast that they had to 10 and told grandpa they would come again soon. I was 11 in tears.

That evening, Grandpa sat up and asked the 12 what he could eat. Day by day he13 for the better. Grandpa' recovery was a medical 14 , the doctors thought. But I knew the truth: His friends' 15 had made him well.

I was shocked when my socially awkward sister, who had suffered from Asperger Syndrome (阿斯伯格综合症), decided to sing in front of the school. I knew she would 1 me in some way, so I protested. However, my parents insisted that she 2 and I would have to be part of the audience. I silently hoped that something would happen to 3 me from watching her losing face.

As I waited in the hall, sweat 4 my forehead. I comforted myself that no one knew she was my sister and tried to persuade myself that it would be 5 . The lights darkened and the 6 opened to reveal (使露面) my sister standing alone on stage. She seemed 7 , taking a minute to stammer (结结巴巴地说) her name and class. 8 began to be heard in the audience.

I shifted nervously in my seat, afraid what was about to happen. But as my sister started to sing, I was 9 . Her voice flowed effortlessly and melodiously, filling the hall with its 10 . I watched in wonder, realizing I had never known she could sing so 11 . I listened carefully to the lyric (歌词) she had written herself, feeling ashamed for doubting her 12 . My heart gave way as I heard the heartfelt words.

 In that moment, guilt and shame flooded my heart. 13 my unwillingness to support her, she had never taken anything that I had done to her to heart. It was then that I determined to love her 14 . It was as if a veil (面纱) had been 15 from my eyes, and my heart was full.
