After serving in the army for a few years, Zhang Yu joined the SF Express in Wuhan in 2019 and became a deliveryman (快递员) . Since then, he has worked hard every day and always tries to help others. When Zhang sends packages to people, he often takes note of their daily habits. He knows which houses have babies, and when clerks are free.
But what made him famous was his brave act. He won the China Youth May Fourth Medal in 2022 because of it.
In December 2021, Zhang saw a fire while he was delivering packages. He climbed up to the second floor of a building and saved a family from a balcony (阳台) on the third floor. He brought each person down safely.
People have since called him a hero (英雄). However, Zhang simply said, "I'm just an ordinary man who did what a kind man would do."
Zhang Yu is now a deputy (代表) to the Hubei Provincial People's Congress-He-wants to speak for his coworkers to improve things for them. Zhang is working to make electric scooters (电动车) safer on the roads in Wuhan. This is important because there are a lot of electric scooters and sometimes they cause traffic problems. He wants to help protect the riders.
