People all have something to say. Some express their passion (强烈的感情) through clothe, art, or community involvement. Others express themselves with poetry, which has diverse poetic forms to express unique thoughts, experiences, and imagination at the fourth annual People's Poetry Festival held Feb. 28 through March 2.

"The People's Poetry Festival keeps getting bigger and bigger—it's an event we're really proud of," said Dr Mark Hartlaub, College of Liberal Arts Dean at Texas. The festival covered a wide variety of topics including nature, humor, women and history. From the panels to the open microphone night, the islander's community, along with 43 published poets from around the country, local high school students, and the general public came together to share their love of poetry.

The panels were full of passionate readings and lively discussion. For the first time ever, musical poetry was performed at the event. The "Homebrewed" panel was made up of all local poets. The "From Page to the Stage" panel focused on slam (抨击) poetry, and the "Humor" panel greeted levels of laughter from the crowd. All the panels were live streamed on the People's Poetry Facebook page. "The poetry and poets were all my students wanted to talk about in class this week," said Dr. Chuck Etheridge, professor of English who attended many of the panel readings.

Celebrating exceptional writers is another part of People's Poetry Festival. On opening night, the People's Poetry Festival committee named Madeline Ricondo of Tuloso-Midway as the winner of the Robb Jackson Writing Award for high school students. This award honors the late Dr. Robb Jackson, Texas A&M University System Regents Professor and professor of English at A&M-Corpus Christi, whose poetry shared his life experiences and observation of Corpus Christi. Ricondo received a $100 gift card, plus, three poetry books with local ties including a copy of Jackson's "Open Heart". The people's Poetry Festival committee also recognized Juan Manuel Perez, award-winning poet and local history teacher, as the 2019—2021 Poet Laureate (桂冠诗人) of Corpus Christi.

    1. (1) What can be inferred about the People's Poetry Festival?
    2. (2) Which can possibly replace the underlined word "panels" in Paragraph 2?
    3. (3) What was special about the 4th People's Poetry Festival?
    4. (4) What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

In Canada you can find dogs, cats, horses, etc. in almost every family. These are their pets. People love these pets and have them as their good friends. Before they keep them in their houses, they take them to animal hospitals to give them injections (注射) so that they won't carry disease. They have special animal food stores, though they can get animal food in almost every kind of store. Some people spend around two hundred Canadian dollars a month on animal food. When you visit people's houses, they would be very glad to show you their pets and they are very proud of them. You will also find that almost every family has a bird feeder in their garden. All kinds of birds are welcomed to come and have a good meal. They are free to come and go and nobody is allowed to kill any animal in Canada. They have a law against killing wild animals. If you killed an animal, you would be punished. If an animal happened to get run over by a car, people would be very sad.

People in Canada have many reasons to like animals. One of them might be:Their family ties are not as close as ours. When children grow up,they leave their parents and start their own life. Then the old will feel lonely. But pets can solve this problem. They can be good friends and never leave them alone.

Empathy (同理心)is one of those strange qualities—something almost everyone wants, but few know how to truly give or receive it. In a world where self-satisfaction is emphasized, it is in short supply but high demand. This is all the more reason to teach the next generation what it means to have empathy for those around them.

What Is Empathy?— Many people confuse sympathy and empathy, but they are two distinct values. Empathy is not just the ability to understand someone's feelings; criminals often take advantage of people by appearing to understand their feelings and subsequently gaining their trust. Empathy is more than that. Not only is it the ability to recognize how someone feels, but it also values and respects the feelings of another person. It means treating others with kindness, dignity, and understanding.

Kids Need To See Adults Show Empathy—While some children are gifted with naturally kind hearts, in most cases kids need to see empathy modeled by the adults around them. It begins with the way parents relate to their children. Parents who show an interest in the things that matter to their kids and respond to emotions in a positive and caring way are teaching the skill of empathy.

Meet Emotional Needs—When children have their emotional needs met, two things happen. They learn how to meet the emotional needs of others and they are anchored in what they are receiving, meaning that they are secure enough to give to others when the need arises but first they need to receive. An empty jug cannot fill a cup.

It's a good idea to talk to kids about emotions and how other people experience them. Give their emotions names (for example, jealousy, anger, and love) and teach them that these are normal. Talk to them about how to handle emotions in a positive way and point out situations where other people are experiencing emotions. Teach them about respecting the emotions of others and show them how to act in a situation where a response is required.

    1. (1) Why is it that the next generation are taught to have empathy?
    2. (2) Which situation can empathy be used in?
    3. (3) What does the underlined sentence "An empty jug cannot fill a cup" mean?
    4. (4) What is the main topic of the passage?

A study conducted by Cornell University examined how the use of AI in conversations impacts the way people express themselves and view each other.

The researchers have found people have more efficient conversations, use more positive language and perceive each other more positively when using an Al-enabled chat tool.

However, the group also found that when participants think their partner is using more AI-suggested responses, they consider that partner as less cooperative.

"I was surprised to find people tend to evaluate you more negatively simply because they suspect you're using AI to help compose text, regardless of whether you actually are," said Jess Hohenstein, the lead researcher. "This illustrates the continuous overall doubt that people seem to have around AI."

For their first experiment, participants were asked to talk about a policy issue and assigned to one of three conditions: both participants can use smart replies; only one participant can use smart replies; or neither participant can use smart replies. Researchers found that using smart replies increased communication efficiency, positive emotional language and positive evaluations by communication partners. On average, smart replies accounted for 14.3% of sent messages.

But participants who their partners suspected of responding with smart replies were evaluated more negatively than those who were thought to have typed their own responses, consistent with common assumptions about the negative implications of AI.

"While Al might be able to help you write," Hohenstein said, "it's altering your language in ways you might not expect, especially by making you sound more positive. This suggests that by using text-generating Al, you're giving up some of your own personal voice."

Malte Jung, an associate professor, said, "What we observe in this study is the impact that Al has on social dynamics and some of the unintended consequences that could result from integrating AI in social contexts. This suggests that whoever controls the algorithm(算法) may have influence on people's interactions, language and insights into each other."

    1. (1) What is the text mainly about?
    2. (2) How do the researchers draw their conclusion?
    3. (3) Which statement does Hohenstein agree with?
    4. (4) How will a person feel about suspecting his partner's using smart replies?

Life is full of struggles. Sometimes, we simply want to shy away from them. But even when our minds are constantly telling us that we should call it a day, we can still keep on going. The solution is the Cookie Jar.

The Cookie Jar method was created by one of the toughest men alive, David Goggins. Goggins is a retired Navy SEAL, who has competed in more than sixty ultra-marathons triathlon.

To raise money for a non-profit organization for orphans, Goggins vowed to run Badwater 135. Badwater is the world's hardest foot race. To qualify for Badwater, one has to run 100 miles in 3 days, that is, 4 marathons in one go. With zero preparation and training, Goggins decided to have a try.

For the first few miles of the race, he felt fine and had no trouble running. But at mile 50, his legs felt like they were loaded with lead. Still he ran. Then at mile 70, he couldn't take another step forward. Exhausted and feeling beaten down, he sat down to rest. He kept on asking himself,  "Why? Why are you still doing this to yourself? " He then remembered this wasn't the first time he'd taken on an impossible task. And he suddenly felt some energy build up. He started walking slowly, step by step. He kept on digging in his past while remembering all his previous victories, making him get the energy he needed to keep on going. His feet were still a bloody mess, full of blisters. But it gave him just enough drive to sustain him, until the 100-mile mark. And that's what the Cookie Jar is.

We all have a cookie jar inside us. Whenever you face a challenge, whenever you want to give up, you open the cookie jar and pick a cookie. The cookie reminds you of something you've overcome and how far you've come. Eventually, you'll slowly build up your mind to be more mentally tough. Impossible, will turn into, I can do this.

    1. (1) What does the underlined phrase "call it a day" in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
    2. (2) What can we learn about David Goggins?
    3. (3) According to the text, what does "the Cookie jar" stand for?
    4. (4) What is the best title for the text?

The power of effective marketing has a long history. In the 19th century, a new product, soap, became available to everyone in England at a low price. Every British soap producer faced fierce competition. Their answer was to focus on promotion-and to come up with attractive visuals, catchy slogans and competitions to increase sales. Yet it can all very easily go wrong.

However clever the advertisement is, a product that nobody wants is not going to sell. In the motor industry there are stories of products that the public simply did not want. In 1957, Ford introduced a new model, Edsel. Following an investment of $400 million, the company sold only 25 percent of the cars they produced and lost $350 million. Perhaps Ford's biggest mistake was to misjudge the demand from the American public. America had just entered an economic recession(衰退), so the last thing people wanted was a large,expensive car that used a lot of fuel.

On special promotions, companies may underestimate demand and spend a lot more than they budgeted for. A classic case is that of Hoover,a vacuum(真空的)cleaner company,which offered two free air tickets to anyone who bought a vacuum cleaner for more than one hundred pounds. The tickets cost far more than the appliance. Sales increased 30% but the cost of the promotion was massive. The company lost over £40 million and in the end it was put up for sale.

Customers may find a different meaning in publicity than the promoters intended. Names, symbols and even colors are all possible danger areas. Pepsi Cola made an enormous mistake in some regions in changing the color of its vending machines to light blue, a color associated with death.

The message for successful marketing companies is never to make assumptions about your target audience. Otherwise, even creative, memorable promotion can go disastrously wrong!

My dog, Harvey, is always looking for something to do. He loves to fetch the ball, run after birds' shadows and bite bones. If none of those are available, he'll find something else to do. He'll chew our shoes, dig holes in the garden or take toilet paper off the roll. This is the reason we gave him a middle name: Danger.

Harvey Danger is a metaphor(暗喻)for my mind. He is like an active and creative mind. My experience with having a creative mind is that if I don't give it a task, something will turn on itself.

To be frank, several years ago, I didn't think I was creative. I was just an ordinary human sticking to my daily routine. But things changed when I came across an article written by Brene Brown. She put forward a theory I had never heard of. "There're no such beings as creative people or non-creative people. There're only people who use their creativity and people who don't, " Brown wrote. "Unused creativity is not benign. It can transform and turn into anger, sorrow, shame and depression. "

I have a mind that is all of those things combined and, if it doesn't have anything to take its attention, it will go searching for things. It tends to do negative things or find things like worries or troubles to focus on. That doesn't mean that those with creative minds need to be busily thinking all the time. What it means is that our minds need a task. It's about releasing our creative energy to keep our minds healthy.

Before I throw a ball to Harvey-because it's not only good for both of us, but also good for the garden that I don't want dug up-I'll leave you with Brown's wisdom. Just give the dog a job, and you'll have a happier life.

    1. (1) Why was the author's dog named Danger?
    2. (2) What changed the author's understanding of creativity?
    3. (3) What does the underlined word "benign" in paragraph 3 mean?

New editions of Roald Dahl's classic books, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda, are now available in bookstores. Some passages relating to weight, mental health, gender and race were changed. The changes made by Puffin Books, a division of Penguin Random House, first were reported by Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper.

The changes to Dahl's books mark the latest debate over cultural sensitivity. Those who support updates seek to protect young people from cultural, ethnic and gender stereotypes in literature and other media. Critics complain that revisions to suit 21st century sensibilities risk weakening the genius of great artists and preventing readers from facing the world as it is.

The Roald Dahl Story Company controls the rights to the books. The company said it worked with Puffin Books to review the texts because it wanted to ensure that"Dahl's wonderful stories and characters continue to be enjoyed by all children today. "

Inclusive Minds, a group that is working to make children's literature more inclusive and accessible, reviewed the language in a partnership effort with Puffin Books. Inclusive language avoids terms that could be seen as excluding specific groups of people. Any changes were"small and carefully considered, "the company said.

"When publishing new print runs of books written years ago, it's not unusual to review the language used alongside updating other details, including a book's cover and page layout, "the company said their guiding principle throughout had been to maintain the storylines, characters, and the spirit of the original text.

PEN America, a community of some 7, 500 writers that advocates for freedom of expression, said it was "alarmed" by reports of the changes to Dahl's books. Suzanne Nossel, chief executive of PEN America, commented on Twitter. She said if we try"to correct for sensing slights (怠慢) instead of allowing readers to receive and react to books as written, we risk distorting the work of great authors and clouding the essential lens (透镜) that literature offers on society. "

Laura Hackett is a childhood Dahl fan who is now deputy literary editor of London, England's Sunday Times newspaper. She had a more personal reaction to the news. "The editors at Puffin should be ashamed of the botched surgery they've carried out on some of the finest children's literature in Britain, "she wrote. "As for me, I'll be carefully putting away my old, original copies of Dahl's stories, so that one day my children can enjoy them in their full, nasty and colorful glory. "

    3. (3) Which of the following may Laura Hackett agree?

During their childhood and teenage years, some young people may feel too shy or uncomfortable to interact(互动) with others of their age. Others may simply become too social in the use of technology to try outdoor interactions.

According to Auburn University professors, the experience of interacting with people of their own age is very important for young people. To encourage interaction in your community(社区), arrange a youth social activity. Such activities are a good way to encourage friendship and social development. You can arrange a bike tour through the local community, stopping along the way to interact with other young people and locals. A group hiking trip is another way to keep young people physically active and sociable. Arrange a day's hike through a forested park. Have them each bring some food to share and stop for a picnic along the way.

Technological development has made many children give up books and social activities in favor of television, computer and video games. Organize a youth weekly reading group to reinforce the value of reading and interacting with others. Organize a list of discussion topics and choose a day each week for group discussion.

Although many youth social events are aimed at entertainment(娱乐), it is also important to teach the value of community service. Arrange a trip to a local nursing home and have the young people spend a day socializing with the elderly. Or organize community clean-up and have them work to remove all the rubbish in the areas. Besides, teaching the value of giving back, these activities will allow young people to socialize with one another as well as with other members of the community.

There's a new AI program: ChatGPT. The tool is an AI chatbot system that OpenAI released in November 2022 to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can achieve.

ChatGPT remembers the idea of your dialogue, using previous questions and answers to inform its next responses. It gets its answers from huge volumes of information on the Internet. ChatGPT is built on top of the OpenAI GPT-3 family of large language models and is fine-tuned (a method of transfer learning) using both supervised and reinforcement learning (监督和强化学习).

You can ask ChatGPT anything, like explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas and getting programming help. Perhaps it's not smart enough to replace all humans yet, but it can be creative, and its answers can sound authoritative. A few days after its launch, more than 1 million people were trying out ChatGPT. UBS analyst Lloyd Walmsley estimated in February 2023 that ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly users in January, accomplishing in 2 months what took TikTok about 9 months and Instagram two and a half years.

ChatGPT is free to use at the moment because it is still in its research stage. But when too many people hop onto the server(服务器), it is overloaded and can't process your request. It just means you should try visiting the site at a later time when fewer people are trying to access it. If you want to skip the wait and have reliable access, there is an option for you. As of Feb. 1, 2023, OpenAI has a ChatGPT pro plan, ChatGPT Plus, which allows users to have general access even during peak times. This service does come at a cost of $20/month.

However, ChatGPT cannot replace Google. ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence bot that provides solutions to your questions, but Google is a search engine in which you can search for as much information as possible. ChatGPT has limited knowledge due to its programming but Google has unlimited knowledge which is updated every day.

    1. (1) What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about ChatGPT?
    2. (2) Why does the author list the figures in paragraph 3?
    3. (3) What is ChatGPT Plus intended for?
    4. (4) What is a limitation of ChatGPT compared with Google?
